00:00One of Nigeria's main commercial banks, Guarantee Trust Bank, often called GTB, has confirmed that
00:05its website was hacked but insisted that customer savings and other data were not affected because
00:10the bank does not store customers' data on its website. GTB, in a statement posted on its official
00:17social media handles few hours ago, said the information security experts of the bank are
00:22still working to restore the domain settings of the bank as at 12 p.m. on Thursday afternoon,
00:27the bank press statement was made available. Adding, the bank customers should expect the
00:33website back online soon. Some Nigerians, as early as 5 a.m. on Thursday early morning night,
00:38took to its social media platform to raise alarm that the bank website has been hacked by cyber
00:43criminal group with any group yet to claim responsibility for the internet theft. GTB's
00:49statement reads as stated below, our attention has been drawn to reports in the media alleging
00:54that hackers have seized the bank's website, cloned it and intercepted customer data.
00:59While there was an isolated incident of an attempt to compromise our website domain,
01:04we would like to assure all our customers and stakeholders that the bank's website has not
01:09been cloned and that we do not store customer information on our website and as such there has
01:14been no instance of compromise of customer data. Our dedicated team of information security experts
01:21are currently working around the clock to restore domain settings and we can assure our customers
01:26that our website will be up shortly. We urge all our customers to please disregard the claims in
01:32these media reports and assure you of our unwavering commitments to safeguarding customer
01:36data. Thank you for your continued support. One of the concerned Nigerians had tweeted with photo
01:43evidences that hackers steal GTB's website, intercept customers data in massive phishing
01:48oppression. Suspected cyber criminals appeared to have compromised the domain address of Nigeria's
01:54banking giant GTB since Wednesday night the 14th of August 2024. The incident came a day after the
02:01domain name was renewed for another five years from August 13th 2024 through March 21st 2029
02:08according to multiple online platforms that analyze domain information. No hacker has claimed
02:14responsibility for the vandalism yet which appeared to have started midnight yesterday
02:18August 14th. Already the attackers appeared to have created another HTTP layer of the website
02:25in an apparent flaw to steal customers data through phishing. A cybersecurity expert with experience in
02:31the Nigerian banking industry said it was possible that the bank's login details were compromised
02:37as against the domain address itself being stolen for a resell at a more lucrative deal online.
02:42This phishing attack has now caused GitBank's domain name to be owned by someone else either
02:47by the hackers or whoever they choose to sell it to. This brings the question if GTBank being one
02:53of the biggest banks in Nigeria did not have a DNSSEC setup which would have prevented or
02:59mitigated this hack. The bank's mobile infrastructure did not appear to have been affected for now
03:05as Android and iOS based applications are still in oppression. One thing is for sure a lot of
03:11GTBank staff would definitely be losing their jobs this week.
