Golf Hip Drills To Help Improve Your Rotation

Reverse pivots and swaying will rob you of power and control. Coach Ged Walters suggests some tips drills to help you rotate properly.

00:00Guys, Ed Walters here.
00:05We're at Las Colinas Golf Club in Alicante in Spain, and I'm going to give you a drill
00:09that you can do at home as well as on the driving range and before you play to help
00:14your pivot, your body rotation improve in your golf swing.
00:19Now, common that we see is, you know, some guys really, really nice setup, and then we
00:26see a backswing which looks a little bit like this, or we see a backswing which looks then
00:32a little bit like this.
00:34And the big thing with that is the body's pivot and especially the upper body is not
00:40moving in the desired way that we need it to, to be efficient and to be powerful as
00:45well.
00:46So what we need to make sure that we do is we keep as close as we possibly can an alignment
00:52between the center of the shoulders and the center of the hips as well.
00:57So if you look at your shirt buttons and your belt buckle, we need to keep them as aligned
01:01as we possibly can.
01:03So when we would be taking our setup position, what we don't want to do is go this way because
01:11what we've done there is we've made a turn, but the one thing we haven't done is we haven't
01:16extended the spine angle to retain our position and our nice control of the pivot and the
01:24turn and the power.
01:26So if we look at the golf swing, we've got the turn, we've got the forward bend, and
01:34a slight extension in the spine angle to retain our position there nice and smoothly and powerfully.
01:41And from there, we can really unwind and get a real powerful downswing.
01:45If we think about it, the most powerful muscles in your golf swing are glutes and quads followed
01:51by your core.
01:52So if they're not getting themselves in the right position, you're going to struggle,
01:56massively struggle, then you become very hands and armsy and totally inconsistent.
02:00So drill that we need to do.
02:02I want you to get your club and I want you to place it right on the very top of your
02:06shoulders, just in there.
02:09In your setup position, a little forward bend into here, okay, I want you to get the
02:15club head as I've got it here to go down towards the ground, almost towards the inside of your
02:23trailing foot.
02:27And then in the downswing and throughswing, you want to get the belt buckle to rotate
02:32towards the target, getting the grip end down into that position, then we're going to go
02:37around and through into a great finish.
02:40So when we see that from the face-on position, we're going down as we rotate, and as you
02:48see there, there's no movement to one side or the other.
02:52So my spine's tilting, turning, it's extending, all in one motion to there, and then I can
02:59push through, down, and into the finish.
03:03Now that drill, five minutes a day at home, even if you wanted to, you could place your
03:08forehead on the door frame, do it in the door frame to get used to making that movement
03:13to start with.
03:14But the more you do it, the better you get at it, and it doesn't take long for your pivot
03:18and your rotation of the body to get better and better and better when you're out on the
03:21golf course where it really matters.
03:23Now I'm going to give you a view when I hit this shot of how stable the body rotation
03:29is.
03:30It's difficult really to see stability from a fast movement, especially with the arms
03:34in the way in the front view.
03:36So I'm going to give you a different view, I'm going to give you this one.
03:40Because from this angle here, you can see everything, how stable and centered the body's
03:45rotation is, and then round into that finish.
03:51So I'm going to hit this shot for you now, and I'm going to make that nice movement,
03:57turning, tilting, extending all the way through, and into the finish position.
04:06And then we get a beautifully crisp strike, lovely control on the ball flight, loads of
04:11power, loads of distance.
04:12Guys, make sure you do it, five minutes a day, you know, you could be there watching
04:16the news, you could be watching the sport, anything on TV, just standing there and making
04:20sure you prepare so when you get on the golf course, everything works much, much better.
04:24Guys, thanks for watching.
