00:00Now we review Harold and the Purple Crayon, the 2024 film.
00:10Ladies and gentlemen, I have seen Harold and the Purple Crayon.
00:15Yes, isn't that nice?
00:18No, it's not nice?
00:20Yeah, you're probably right.
00:22Anyway, for how many thousand subscribers I get, I did purchase one of these bracelets from 4ocean.
00:274ocean pulls a pound of trash out of the ocean every time I do that.
00:30Now, Harold and the Purple Crayon.
00:36Shazam has a purple crayon that allows him, instead of being Shazam,
00:41he has a purple crayon that gives him the superpower of being able to create anything he wants that he draws.
00:48So it's the Green Lantern Ring of Purple Crayons.
00:52And he lives in his own little world with his moose and his porcupine friend.
00:57And this world is narrated by an old man.
01:01And then one day the old man stops narrating.
01:04And Shazam has to come to our world to find out why the old man isn't narrating anymore.
01:12And along the way, his moose friend turns into Discount Kevin Hart.
01:17And his porcupine friend turns into this hot English chick who did not get enough screen time.
01:25Because, best part of the movie.
01:27And along the way, he finds that his arch nemesis is a D&D nerd with issues.
01:38And then there's this hot chick and her son who need spiritual guidance.
01:47Alright, so that's your movie.
01:51And this movie is getting slayed by critics.
01:57It's got like a 25% of critics on Rotten Tomatoes.
02:01But a 95% of audiences on Rotten Tomatoes.
02:06And further along those lines, it's getting something like a 4.3% on IMDb.
02:12So, people are saying this movie is bad.
02:17And I did not read the original books.
02:22There's a children's book which is called Harold and the Purple Crayon.
02:26And it's about a boy whose imagination essentially runs wild because he has a purple crayon.
02:31And anything he draws, he imagines, comes to life.
02:34You know, one of the things about this particular film is that it is designed to invoke a certain air of whimsy.
02:44And, you know, that air of whimsy is very real.
02:50It's like if I had the purple crayon, all the things I would draw.
02:54You know, I would probably start by drawing a box full of money.
02:58You know, $100 bills.
03:01I would draw, you know, hundreds of dollars of bills and then I'd have money.
03:05And, you know, the rest of us, we would do things like we'd draw cars.
03:09And we'd draw... Everything comes out purplish though.
03:13Which is not necessarily a good thing.
03:16But, you know, there's a lot of CG and the first segment of this is animated.
03:23And a lot of people are complaining, or at least some people are complaining that this film was not completely animated.
03:29But, I mean, if you're really going to complain, why is Harold a grown man?
03:36You know, clearly it's like I think he's 30s or 40s when Harold in the book is a child.
03:43And it's like, well, Harold grew up.
03:46Yeah, but Harold doesn't grow up.
03:48That's not how these characters work.
03:50He's eternally a child because that's what the book is.
03:53And why does Moose and Porcupine, why do they become people?
03:58Because in somebody's version of this cartoon, this children's book, they are people.
04:07They're characters based on people.
04:10And I would have had Moose become a much larger person, but that's not who they wanted.
04:19So that's what this became.
04:22And, you know, it honestly looks like, really? Airplane?
04:29It honestly looks like the people who are enjoying this film are parents and grandparents with young children.
04:35And they're taking them to this film and they're remembering their love of the book as a child.
04:40And, I mean, you know, this movie is whimsical.
04:45It's safe.
04:47It's not really challenging you.
04:51But it does deal with the concept of death.
04:54And, you know, it's like, for example, the young boy of the film, his father passed away and his mother is struggling to keep things together.
05:05And you know what?
05:07She works at, it could be a real store, but it's kind of a version of Walmart.
05:12And yet she lives in a good house.
05:16So, I mean, unless the dad paid for the house before he died, or she comes from money, she doesn't need that job.
05:23That's one hole in the plot.
05:25I do, I know this is a kid's movie.
05:27But, you know, if she's working at Walmart, she should be in an assisted living or something.
05:32There's no way she's taking care of her kid and not keeping in borders.
05:37That's just, that's just how things are.
05:40You know, that's one criticism I have of the film.
05:43But I don't believe the hate that is being thrown upon this film is warranted.
05:49Yes, the CGI is not good.
05:52And you can tell in every scene what the CGI is when there is CGI present.
05:57You know where I can also tell in every scene where there is CGI present?
06:01Jurassic Park.
06:04There is 15 minutes of dinosaur footage in Jurassic Park.
06:08And you give me any shot, still shot, from Jurassic Park,
06:12I can probably tell you with 99% accuracy what is and is not CGI.
06:18So that's not a valid criticism of this film.
06:21It's a children's movie.
06:23It's not supposed to look hyper-realistic.
06:26These things, like there is a flying dragon eagle monster.
06:31And like, you know, if that thing were real, it would be terrifying.
06:35But because it's clearly not real, it's cute and adorable.
06:39And that's just what it is.
06:42So, you know, Harold and the Purple Crayon,
06:46it belongs pretty much in the middle of your watch list
06:51for a very specific reason.
06:53This is a movie for children basically under 5, or fans of the book.
06:58And if you have young children, children under 5,
07:03they're probably going to think this is a pretty fun movie.
07:06And if you have people that, you know, live in this world
07:11where wouldn't it be wonderful if I had a magic crayon,
07:14this would probably appeal to them.
07:16And if you're somebody in my age range,
07:19that lady that is really a porcupine,
07:23I mean, you know, I'd take a spine for that.
07:25That is, you know, one cute lady.
07:29She's kind of, you know, got a very unique appearance,
07:33but she's cute. She's really adorable.
07:35So, I have to say that maybe this isn't a theater watch.
07:43Maybe this is a wait for streaming watch.
07:45Maybe this is a watch this with your young children kind of a movie.
07:49Obviously, if you're not into kids films, this is kryptonite to you.
07:54I mean, you know, it's like my brother who's a big horror movie fan,
07:58I would not recommend this to him.
08:02But for parents with young children,
08:04I would definitely recommend this film.
08:06It's fun. It's airy. It's light.
08:09And it has not a heavy-handed message,
08:15but it deals with the abstract concept of death.
08:18So, I would say, yeah, middle of the watch list.
08:22You may love this film or you will hate this film.
08:26It's generally going to be pretty polarizing.
08:29But, you know, I don't think it's as bad as people say.
08:32But that's just my opinion.
08:33I'd love to hear yours down in the comments below.
