They were a maze of tiny terraces, a part of the town's past. But they are long gone - the history of Bonny Street in Blackpool
Transcript
00:00They were a clump of terraced streets stepped back from the seafront and they seemed a world
00:06away from the Golden Mile. But there they were, a stone's throw from the beach and wedged
00:11alongside the resort's railway station in the golden age of steam. They are long gone
00:16but were narrow with dingy backyards, old gas lamps and unexpected views of the railway.
00:22It was a quirky layout. However, in March 1959, 26 homes in Bonny Street, Pleasant View
00:28and Wilkinson's Yard were flattened by demolition crews under a slum clearance order. In 1964
00:36the station closed and the whole area was eventually replaced by the police station,
00:40court buildings, central car park and the famous and much-loved Bonny Street Market.
00:44Again, it's all changed. Things are on the move, but this is how it used to look.
