00:00It's got an exciting night here, you've beaten Swindon 40, what's your assessment of the
00:07performance and the result?
00:08Yeah, disappointed that we had to win a game twice, but we had a young team out tonight
00:13and I was really proud with the way we played him in large parts of the game. I think we
00:20turned the ball over a lot, we were a little naive in moments of the game as well. I'm
00:28really proud of the players, we were good tonight. The younger players in the squad
00:34did excellent, we had some real good passages of play and I felt that we had control of
00:41the game in big moments, in big areas of the game. But we shouldn't have to win a game
00:49twice, it's hard enough winning a game once, to win it twice is a no-no for me, but the
00:54younger players of the squad will learn from that, it's good. They're playing against a
00:59good side as well.
01:00What did you put that down to? After the second goal went in, it felt like you were on the
01:03ascendancy and then suddenly it just changed, is there anything you could do?
01:07Well yeah, we just made silly mistakes in crucial moments, in crucial areas of the pitch.
01:14We shouldn't go to ground in the penalty box to give a penalty away, no-one should ever
01:18go to ground when you're in the penalty box, you've got to stand on your feet. Then we
01:22make a save from the penalty and then they score off the corner, so we need to look at
01:27that, we're really big on defensive corners, we do a lot of work. I think it was Harry
01:32Smith who scored that goal, so he looked like he was on his own, free-header, so we're upset
01:41about that, the way we conceded that. Then we do so many good things but so many silly
01:46things, but it'll be good learning for the players.
01:49These cup competitions, last year it was the EFL Trophy, this year using this and that
01:54for the younger players?
01:55Yeah, for sure, obviously you saw tonight we rested some of the boys who played on Saturday,
02:01the back three played and the goalkeeper played. We made changes, obviously Max played, but
02:10we made a few changes to give these boys a game. I thought it was a really good exercise
02:16tonight against a real competitive team, they made only three changes from their game
02:22at the weekend, so they were really strong.
02:25And it shows again the resilience you've got on the side after going back to two, you've
02:28won it again haven't you?
02:29Yeah, for sure, we were always kind of comfortable I felt in the game. After they scored their
02:35second when it came back to 2-2, it gave them a little bit more aggression to press on the
02:42front foot, which I felt probably helped us because we played through their press really
02:48really well and got out of their back line on a number of occasions. There's loads to
02:56be positive about tonight, but we can't be winning a game twice.
03:00And Jack Rowles, two stunning goals.
03:02Wow, yeah, he was really really good tonight in the final third, especially he was outstanding,
03:10he took his goals, amazing, didn't he? So many good things that he did tonight, so yeah,
03:14he's a good player.
03:16And Joey McKenna, you made him captain tonight, that must have been a proud moment for him,
03:19how did he find out about being captain?
03:22Just in the meeting before the game, we put the team up. The players knew yesterday what
03:27the team was, but we put the finer detail in, things like that, in the meeting, so he
03:33knew. But no, he's a leader, you could hear him after the game at half-time, kind of throwing
03:40a few bollockings about, so good, that's what we want from him. He's a young player who's
03:48not had loads of experience at this level, but we think a lot of him. We feel he has
03:55got those leadership skills.
03:57And Raf Khalil, we haven't seen him for a long time, thought he was a superb game tonight.
04:00He was great, wasn't he? I think he ran out of steam, there were a couple of runs towards
04:05the end that he didn't want to make. But no, I like Raf's performance tonight, I'm so,
04:11so pleased for him to score as well, I thought it was a great finish. But yeah, great performance
04:16by him.
04:17And what in particular pleased you about him?
04:19Just kind of like, he's just very nimble with the ball, he's aggressive, I thought he smashed
04:26into tackles with King, who's an experienced player, and I think King got him booked, so
04:32he's got to kind of learn from that. But I liked him tonight, I liked his aggression
04:35to not just be on the ball, but his aggression off the ball as well. Very good.
