00:00Gum busting machines are part of a new campaign by the council to tackle the
00:05issue of chewing gum on Bristol's streets after they received a £27,500
00:11grant from the Chewing Gum Task Force. The council are working with Bristol
00:15Waste. Brilliant, I don't like chewing gum on my slippers. Yeah no it's really good.
00:22We need to keep Bristol tidy so everyone needs to do their bit. Just throw your
00:26litter in the bin please. I actually haven't really noticed too much chewing gum.
00:32It's not something that's ever really crossed my mind but I guess I'm not
00:36really looking too closely at the street. Bus stops and pavements reminding
00:39passers-by to bin their gum but what do locals think about the state of the
00:44Bristol Street? Bristol's really made a big push to make the streets a lot more
00:50yeah better especially in Cottham. Yeah Cottham's really good right now.
00:56They've made the area as you can see pedestrianized it, made out some bench
01:02and people having fun. Yeah I guess so I mean like it's not gonna be like it's
01:07not gonna worsen the environment so I guess it's a good thing. And what kind
01:11of things would you like to see improved on the streets? I really like
01:15just like what they've got with Cottham Hill here where it's a bit more
01:17pedestrianized. It's more targeted towards like walkers and cyclists rather
01:21than cars. That's what I really love that they've done here. People might
01:25think that it's not a massive issue or that there's other bigger issues we
01:30could be focusing on but the reality is we spend around six million pounds every
01:36year to street cleanse this particular area of Bristol where the
01:41chewing gum removal is happening. And chewing gum is a big part of that.
01:45It costs us money to remove. It's pretty you know labour-intensive to remove. So
01:52being able to have this funding and dedicate funding and Bristol Waste
01:57crews to this issue is really important.
