00:02It was a little too risque for a morning show.

00:11Hi, I'm Jared Ellner,
00:12and this is Behind the Looks with Who What Wear.
00:14This is Emma Chamberlain
00:16for Jean-Paul Gaultier couture show.
00:20She is wearing vintage Gaultier.
00:23It's spring 2004.
00:25On the runway, it was just a blazer with no pants,
00:27but she's smaller.
00:29So this worked out as a dress.
00:31And then it was a little bit big,
00:33but because it's, like, archival vintage,
00:36we could not tailor it.
00:37But they happened to have the matching corset
00:40that we put on top, which was, like, crazy luck,
00:42because I love this.
00:44I love this jacket so much.
00:45It's beautiful.
00:46And then the heels are by this Berlin young designer,
00:51Maud Amorfo, which I'm obsessed with.
00:54We actually wanted to get boots from them.
00:57They make, like, a stunning ballerina boot,
00:59but they had these instead.
01:01And I think it worked even better
01:03because then we tied the whole glam in to be ballerina.
01:06We made her this little fashion ice princess ballerina,
01:11which is, like, a blush pink look is everything to me.
01:14I feel like that could be the source of my love for fashion,
01:18like a blush pink monochromatic look.
01:20And it doesn't happen that often, so I love this one.
01:24But I feel like all the pieces really came together.
01:27It was really nice to pull in a young designer
01:30whose stuff I had saved for quite some time
01:33that worked with this,
01:34because it just brought it to a new space.
01:38What is it like mixing archive with new?
01:40It is a journey.
01:41I mean, it's really nice to transform something.
01:45I think the beauty of archive is that it happened
01:48and it was a moment, but to make it something new
01:52is really exciting and a privilege.
01:54So I feel like when it's right
01:56and it feels blended and, like, it's one look, it's amazing.
02:00But I think it's just about finding something
02:03that feels like the perfect complement
02:04so it's not distracting
02:06or taking away from the original design.
02:11This is Rina Sawayama.
02:14This was the John Wick New York premiere for John Wick 4.
02:18It was the first time we'd worked together.
02:21It was her first project where she was an actress.
02:23She's a musician.
02:24She's a model.
02:25She's everything.
02:26This was one of my favorite looks.
02:29I love red carpet dressings.
02:32I think it's such a great opportunity
02:33to show somebody's personality,
02:36but elevate and maybe do a character, do something new.
02:40And Rina just takes it there.
02:42Each look that we did for that press tour
02:43was very different,
02:45but this one specifically I loved.
02:47I felt like it would have been very hard to pull off
02:50if you weren't a true fashion girl,
02:52and she is a fashion girl at heart.
02:55I think Rina does a fantastic job
02:58at treating everything like a character.
03:01So when we're doing music things,
03:05like I did her tour,
03:06she has a very specific vision
03:08of what that character's story is,
03:11how it's gonna progress.
03:12And I think in that same way for red carpet,
03:15she just wants to tell a story.
03:16So this one was samurai princess fashion warrior.
03:21We did this right after Jimmy Fallon.
03:25They told us initially,
03:27please do not choose a look that is complicated.
03:29It needs to be easy
03:30and something that you can slip into in like two seconds.
03:34And there were like 60 to 100 buttons up the back.
03:38We did not listen.
03:39It was manic, but it was so cute.
03:42And it was really the right moment for this look.
03:44It just felt good for like a wintry New York vibe.
03:48She's a chameleon.
03:50This is SZA for the cover of Rolling Stone.
03:54This look was created in collaboration,
03:58one by this artist, Original Rose,
04:00who does these gorgeous like Moss purses,
04:04specifically Moss Birkins, which I'm obsessed with.
04:07In this look, you can't see it,
04:08but on the side there's like a huge Moss Birkin
04:11that didn't make the cut,
04:12but she made this bikini.
04:14It was made by our tailor, Miguel Pena,
04:18and he's incredible.
04:19And then she applied the Moss after.
04:23I love this look.
04:24SZA is like nature, fairy, princess, queen in my eyes.
04:27That's my favorite version of her.
04:30So to be able to do something that felt cool and chill,
04:34but still very whimsical for a cover like this was a dream.
04:41The boots are by Custom J1.
04:43I love them.
04:44They're beautiful.
04:45And the armband is by Presley Oldham.
04:47He is a stunning jewelry designer.
04:50I think these were his grandma's like flowers,
04:53beaded flowers that she made
04:55that he turned into this arm cuff.
04:56So it just felt like a lot of really special pieces
05:00coming together to create what I hoped for
05:03would be a simple, but like whimsical look.
05:07I love this one.
05:08What is it like seeing my styling on a newsstand?
05:10I don't see many newsstands, to be honest.
05:12Like I'm just not walking past newsstands.
05:15It's incredible to hold it,
05:17especially the Rolling Stone covers.
05:19They're everything.
05:20It's such an exciting feeling.
05:23This is Rachel Sennett.
05:25She's going to the Gotham Awards in New York.
05:27She's wearing Dilara Findicoglou,
05:29who is one of my favorite designers.
05:32There are very few, especially young designers,
05:36who I feel like can do things that feel antique
05:40and like they have character
05:41and like there's a whole story built in
05:44in a very fashion way that isn't cheesy.
05:47So I love this look.
05:49Rachel's also someone who can hold a lot.
05:52She can, similar to Rina, fill a character
05:55and she just owns it.
05:58I feel like she can wear the craziest things
06:01and make it feel like herself
06:03and like she is in charge, but still natural.
06:08This was a really fun one.
06:09I was not there in person.
06:11She was in New York, so I was like FaceTiming her.
06:15I loved it.
06:15I really enjoy putting her in a corsety,
06:18antiquey, vintage vibe
06:20because I think she carries it very well.
06:23When working with talent, like Rachel specifically,
06:27I think for us, we've worked together for so long.
06:31She was the second client I ever had.
06:33So we've been on a journey
06:36from the very beginning of her career to where she is now.
06:39It's so incredible to watch.
06:41She has come so far.
06:43I think it's about zooming out and then zooming in.
06:46So having long goals for her fashion career
06:51and then each specific time,
06:52really making sure that it's specific to the event
06:55that we're going to, the photo shoot, whatever it is.
06:59I feel like you have to have a balance
07:01between this North Star of what she wants to be,
07:06which for her, I think it's campy and fun,
07:10but still very fashion and serious
07:14and all those things at once.
07:16So it's a balance.
07:17I feel like you have to have that in mind
07:19and then also have some freedom to play
07:22and experiment along the way.
07:24I identify new designers by just constantly searching.
07:28Like I feel like you have to be on the hunt all the time.
07:31There's always new talent coming out.
07:34There's new artists, designers, craftsmen
07:37doing amazing things that you just have
07:39to really be on the lookout for.
07:41So it's just about staying aware
07:43and honestly being on Instagram.
07:46Like being online is a huge part of it.
07:49Just always discovering
07:50because they're in like every area of the world.
07:53This is Phoebe Bridgers.
07:55This was actually right before a shoot that we did that day.
07:59We shot the cover of the Guardian magazine
08:02and my friend Davis brought me onto this
08:05and the two of them had been wanting to recreate,
08:07I think it's like a meme of this guy wearing a suit
08:11and then full lingerie in the back.
08:14And right before the shoot, we did this.
08:17I had my tailor cut up these vintage pants, shirt
08:21and we had some beautiful,
08:24I think it was Agent Provocateur lingerie.
08:27I mean, I think she did the perfect dorky smile
08:31that just made it all click.
08:33So it was hot and weird and cute,
08:35but yeah, this was like for 20 minutes before a photo shoot.
08:40This was not really supposed to happen,
08:42but Davis and Phoebe had a vision
08:44and we brought it to life.
08:46This is Olivia Rodrigo.
08:47She's wearing Todd Oldham from spring 1995.
08:51It's a very iconic runway moment.
08:53And it was actually two pieces from different looks.
08:57The white top went with a white skirt
09:00and then the yellow skirt went with a yellow top,
09:02but Todd only had the separates.
09:05So we put them together
09:07and this look actually was not supposed to happen.
09:10We did a fitting for the Today Show
09:13where I wanted this as an option,
09:15but it was a little too risque for a morning show.
09:18So we kind of just had it ready to go.
09:21And then that night it was her album release
09:24and she was like, let's do that.
09:27And we didn't have the right shoes for it.
09:30We were planning on performance shoes,
09:31which were like boots.
09:32So we ran out and got little clear kitten heels
09:37in like the 20 minutes that she was doing glam.
09:39And she looked amazing.
09:41She always looks gorgeous,
09:42but this felt really, really impactful
09:46because it's, if you know like deep cut fashion,
09:49this runway moment is just a viral 90s moment.
09:53And it was such a privilege to be able to use it
09:57for her on such a special night.
09:59So I love this look.
10:02I feel like there's so much history in it
10:04that it's, you can't really go wrong.
10:08I feel like Gen Z celebrity style
10:12is a lot more excited about
10:16different facets of people's style.
10:19I feel like in the past,
10:21people have had to be very consistent,
10:24have clear growth from the beginning of their career
10:26to the end.
10:27But I do feel like Gen Z appreciates
10:31when someone can really tap into all the different sides
10:35of who they are style-wise.
10:37So that's the most exciting part.
10:39I feel like it just allows for so much creativity.
10:42And I think it just makes for a much richer portfolio
10:48of someone's fashion history
10:49when you're really celebrated for doing whatever you want.
10:54Goth, clean, chic, girly, campy,
10:57all the things.
10:58As long as it's really good,
11:00I feel like it's applauded, which is lovely.
11:03I feel like that's a great space to be in now.
11:05What made me want to become a stylist?
11:07Truthfully, I never really imagined being a stylist.
11:11I went into fashion because I wanted to do design.
11:15That's what I went to school for.
11:16That's always been the dream.
11:18And things just sort of progressed and I followed it
11:21and I just fell into it.
11:23This was definitely not the goal, but I love it.
11:27And it's become everything.
11:30It's like my whole world now.
11:32A celebrity that inspires me style-wise is Zendaya.
11:36She looks fantastic.
11:38What her and Law have done for years
11:40is really, really, really beautifully done styling.
11:43So that's always an inspiration.
