00:00Former Governor of Anambra State and the Presidential Candidate of Labour Party, Elke in the last
00:05concluded General Elections in Nigeria, Peter Obi has blamed leadership rustality and recklessness
00:11for the failure of Nigerian sportsmen and women to secure a single medal at the 2024
00:16Olympics held in France that came to a close on Sunday.
00:20Peter Obi made this known in a series of tweets on Sunday while the close ceremony of the
00:24two-and-a-half-week-long sports competition was going on with fireworks erupting over
00:29the Stade de France at the end of the Paris Olympics.
00:32As the closing ceremony took place on Sunday at the Stade de France, scenes were showed
00:37from Los Angeles, which is scheduled to host the next Summer Games in 2028.
00:42It was observed that at the end of the ceremony in Paris, actor Tom Cruise jumped off the
00:47stadium roof and was lowered to the floor, where he took the Olympic flag from Los Angeles
00:52Mayor Karen Best and rode off on a motorcycle.
00:55It was estimated that about 9,000 athletes flooded into the stadium to be entertained
01:00by 270 performers and artists in a ceremony described by some hashtag news media and observers
01:06as a celebration of humanity and the unifying power of sports.
01:11Peter Obi while reacting to the failure of Nigerian athletes at the just-concluded Olympics,
01:16said the government of Nigeria invested over 12 billion Naira's Naira for the sporting
01:21game which saw the country not winning any medal.
01:24Peter Obi tweet reads below in quote,
01:26Now that the Paris Olympics 2024 has officially ended and our dear team Nigeria, despite the
01:32huge financial investment made into the project, is returning without a single medal, let me
01:37unreservedly register my displeasure with the performance of our team and their handlers.
01:43The irascality and recklessness that has continued to characterize leadership in our nation in
01:48nearly every department.
01:50The general impression that has come to stick is the one that portrays our country as a
01:54joke even on the international stage.
01:57How can one explain that a country like Jamaica spent less than 5% of what we spent on our
02:03contingents for the Paris Olympics 2024 and won as many as 6 medals?
02:08Yet with our huge financial investments and large contingents, we could not win even a
02:13single medal.
02:15At least 9 African countries won gold but the giant with over 200 million people came
02:20home without even a bronze.
02:22We invested about 12 billion Nairas in this year's Olympics which is almost twice the
02:27amount budgeted for the entire Ministry of Science and Technology for this year.
02:32This is over 136 million Nairas, about $35,000, spent on each of the 88 Nigerian contingents
02:40to the Olympics and no single medal was won while Jamaica, a nation which spent far less
02:45than we did, a total of about $2,300 on each contingent, won 6 medals, won gold, 3 silver
02:52and 2 bronze at the Olympics.
02:56We must now interrogate the relationship between this huge investment and our dismal outcome.
03:02Sad stories like this are allowed only because we have refused to embrace competence and
03:06capacity over routine and favoritism in Nigeria.
03:10Let us consider the case of Fervor Ofili, a Nigerian professional sprinter who trained
03:15for years for the 2024 Olympics only for her name to be recklessly and wrongly removed
03:20from the list of athletes for the 100 meters race at the Olympics by Nigerian sporting
03:25authorities.
03:26What explanation can anyone give about Annette Echikunwoke, a former Nigerian hammer thrower
03:32who was frustrated by the same rascality of some Nigerian leaders, making her switch her
03:37allegiance to the United States where she eventually won a medal in the just completed
03:41Olympics.
03:43These same professional athletes were denied the opportunity to represent our nation in
03:47Tokyo 2020 for similar reasons of administrative recklessness.
03:52I have it on good authority that some injured athletes not physically fit to represent the
03:58country and not competing in the ongoing Olympics were there in Paris receiving estacodes from
04:03our national resources.
04:05Some of the sports officials and others who have no reason to be at the Olympics were
04:11and feeding fat on the estacodes while our nation was crashing out on every sporting
04:15event.
04:16One of our athletes, Ese Upesharaye, had to borrow a bicycle to compete at a sporting
04:22event.
04:23How can one sensibly explain such recklessness and infamy?
04:27What a country!
04:28What a shame!
04:29When do we stop these rascalities that always rob our nation of golden opportunities to
04:34make a positive change?
04:36I call on the government to investigate these gross misconducts and make sure that those
04:40responsible do not have the opportunity to do so again.
04:44We must build a nation of discipline and commitment to duty where competence and capacity reign.
04:50That is the new Nigeria we preach and it is possible.
