In my song “MY OASIS,” I strive to capture the essence of my love for this beautiful oasis of a town that I cherish called Huntington village.
Growing up, my parents owned a ceramic store on Carver Street in the village of Huntington, Long Island. It was an ideal place for a child, where I spent nearly every weekend, decorating pottery, experimenting with glazes, and learning new techniques my mom brought back from her frequent seminars.
For a break, I would visit the picturesque Heckscher Park, just a stone’s throw from the store, to feed the ducks and explore the Heckscher Museum, where I had my first taste of real art. Huntington was filled with so many places to explore: three music shops (two selling instruments and sheet music, and one selling records), a flower show where I sold ceramic turtles and frogs (often at a loss), and the Party Lounge, where I would visit the realistic rubber masks sold year round and occasionally bought a magic trick or two when I had enough money.
For lunch, there was Hamburger ChooChoo, where hamburgers were delivered on a toy train—still the best hamburgers I’ve ever had. Huntington village had so many wonderful aspects that I could go on and on.
In my twenties, I brought my girlfriend and future love of my life to my little oasis village, serenading her in the park I loved so dearly. We often made pilgrimages to the “Book Revue” bookstore, an amazing, huge, cavernous place with practically every book known to man. Years later, living in Queens, I would take my twin daughters on these pilgrimages to visit the bookstore and the park I adored.
Though the flower shops and music stores are gone, and the bookstore has moved to the outskirts of town, this town still has a magic feeling for me. Every time I enter beautiful Heckscher Park, I feel as though I’ve come home again. While I know it’s an impossible task, hopefully I captured a bit of that magic in my song.
