00:00In Tunisia's upcoming presidential election, only three candidates have been cleared to
00:05run, including incumbent President Kays Seyed.
00:08Would-be contenders complained that requirements to register were complicated to meet, like
00:13having to collect signatures from 10,000 registered voters with at least 500 voter signatures
00:19per constituency.
00:20Some 14 applications were rejected among those who applied.
00:25The Electoral Commission explained its reasoning behind this decision.
00:29The main reasons for rejection were lack of the required popular sponsorship, failure
00:34to provide a financial guarantee, or a problem related to the citizenship requirements.
00:41No applications were rejected for lack of judicial records.
00:47Several would-be contenders faced other administrative obstacles like trying to obtain criminal records
00:52or the necessary endorsement forms, forcing them to abandon their application.
00:58Opposition parties claim the registration process was purposefully excluding serious
01:02contenders and have decided to boycott the electoral process.
01:07President Kays Seyed was democratically elected in 2019 but took executive control of the
01:13country in 2021 and is now seeking another term in office.
01:17With over 20 of his opponents arrested back in February 2023, accused of conspiracy against
01:23the state, Tunisia's president faces no real opposition in the next race.
