John Farnham & Olivia Newton-John - "Two Strong Hearts" (August 2, 2015)
Transcript
00:00You love a collaboration, don't you?
00:25Well, it's not all my fault then, see?
00:38When did you first become aware of Olivia Newton-John, do you reckon?
00:41Watching, you know, The Ghost Show.
00:43I just fell in love with her from that day and have been in love with her from that day until now.
00:47I love her. She's a great girl.
00:53And getting to know her as I have, she's got a great sense of humour.
00:56There's no silliness, no diva-ish.
00:59She's just who she is and she's still a down-to-earth Australia girl, you know?
01:23You have both built up an incredible body of work.
01:26We've both been extremely lucky.
01:28I mean, as you know, she's had an extensive international career.
01:32I mean, she's got such a high, high, high range.
01:35Singing some of those songs, I was a little intimidated because it's not in the range that I would normally sing in.
01:40And she was in the same boat with some of the songs that she sang with me,
01:43where, you know, we were outside our comfort zone a little bit and that was great.
01:47And that made us work differently and it was a bit of a surprise for everyone.
02:18And we'd worked together with Anthony Warlow and her and myself with the main event.
02:23And so, yeah, it kind of all felt right.
02:25And hearing your two voices together, it's sort of meant to be that way.
02:31There was one night she sang, um, Dare to Dream.
02:35And she just went for it.
03:01Dare to dream.
03:04Dare to fly.
03:07Dare to be the air that shores afar can touch the sky.
03:14Dare to reach.
03:17Dare to rise.
03:22Flooding in the strength to set my spirit free.
03:28Dare to dream.
03:35I will go the distance.
03:38Embrace resistance.
03:41And I will lay my soul on the line.
03:48When the wait is over and the heart...
03:53Was there an element of competition between you two?
03:55Yeah, absolutely.
03:56I mean, you know, I'd do a lick and she'd do a lick.
03:59Or she'd look at me and go cross-eyed.
04:01It was great fun.
04:02Oh, I will see it through.
04:07I believe this is my moment of truth.
04:15Dare to dream.
04:18Dare to fly.
04:22Dare to be the air that shores afar can touch the sky.
04:26Musically, where does it all start?
04:28Well, literally, with Chong, Chong Lim.
04:31He has worked quite extensively with Olivia.
04:34When she's come out here, she usually uses my band to tour with.
04:37So, you know, he's very aware of her set.
04:40Plus the fact he had a Vegas set all put together.
04:43He's very aware of what I do.
04:45So he's a clever little devil.
04:47He's really smart and a wonderful guy.
04:50I love Chong a lot.
04:51And he came to me with a suggestion of what we could do.
04:56And I just said, yeah, that's great.
04:58It works for me.
04:59Dare to dream.
05:01Dare to be.
05:03Dare to be.
05:05Dare to be.
05:07Dare to be.
05:12Singing each other's material and working together
05:15and putting harmonies where there may not necessarily have been harmonies before.
05:19It was lovely to rework some of my stuff.
05:22And she enjoyed reworking some of hers and sharing them.
05:25It was great fun.
05:26I mean, you know, the stuff from Greece we had a ball with.
05:28A couple of unusual songs in the set.
05:30There's Somewhere Over the Rainbow.
05:32Olivia's idea.
05:33I wasn't quite sure.
05:35But she loves the song.
05:37And Chong did a beautiful arrangement of it.
05:40And to hear her just get up there with those notes is amazing.
05:44Over the rainbow.
05:48Bluebirds fly.
05:54And birds fly.
05:59Over the rainbow.
06:04Why, oh, why can't I?
06:09Peter Allen will always have a place in Olivia's heart and repertoire.
06:13But to hear Tenterfield's Saddler was pretty amazing, too.
06:16And in fact, that was Jilly's idea.
06:18My wife, Jill.
06:20Tenderfield's Saddler.
06:22Tenderfield's Saddler.
06:24He said, why don't you do Tenderfield's Saddler?
06:27And I thought, oh, gee.
06:29I mean, it's not a singer's song.
06:31You can't make it into anything other than what it is.
06:35Olivia really liked the idea as well.
06:37So when we put it together, it was Jill said she cried.
06:40So, yeah, it really deserved a space in the set.
06:43You're there.
06:47Fly away, cockatoo.
06:49Down on the ground, he knew I'd pray.
06:56Time to listen, tell, tell on.
06:58Tenderfield's Saddler, what's on your head?
07:06I honestly have been saying this for as long as I can remember.
07:16But I'm very lucky to do what I do.
07:19And I really know that.
07:21And I try to each time I do it, I do it as if it's the last chance I'll ever get to do it.
07:27There's a star in my heart.
07:29I wish it were wind.
07:31I let it burn up.
07:33And it's sweeter than the reason to live.
07:37And I'm not afraid.
07:40It's the most amazing feeling.
07:42Because, you know, I do go out there prepared to give all of what I've got.
07:47And not hold anything back.
07:50And then when you get that response, you think, oh, thank you.
07:53I'm OK.
07:54I'm OK.
07:55I'm OK.
07:56I'm OK.
07:57I'm OK.

08:04I'm OK.
08:05I'm OK.
08:06I'm OK.
08:07I'm OK.
08:08I'm OK.
08:09I'm OK.
08:10I'm OK.
08:11I'm OK.
08:12I'm OK.
08:13I'm OK.
08:14I'm OK.
08:15I'm OK.
