00:00It is the third Manchester derby at Wembley in little over a year
00:061-1 in terms of victories so far
00:09Both Pep Guardiola and Eric ten Haag will hope to lay a marker down for the season ahead
00:17Season in which Manchester City will chase an unprecedented fifth Premier League title in a row
00:22And a season in which Manchester United with a new look hierarchy and support team to the manager
00:28Look to improve on what was FA Cup apart Ali McCoy's an underwhelming campaign. Well, it certainly was that there's no doubt
00:36inconsistency, you know really poor performances rules really poor season overall, but
00:41See then I'll finish it. Well in a cup final appearance and performance that was
00:47You know surprised a lot of people myself included but it was one that was well deserved actually deserved
00:52And indeed that particular day Sam United were excellent
00:56And the activity for Nico O'Reilly
01:00Has been Manchester City since he was eight years of age. He scored a really good goal against Barcelona on the preseason tour
01:09Has been trusted by Pep Guardiola to start this
01:14Warm-up fixtures to the Premier League season which for Manchester City starts next Sunday for Manchester United will start on Friday night with a home
01:21game against Fulham
01:26Interesting to see how Manchester United approached this game
01:30They approached the cup final cautiously without a conventional striker just a babe set up today
01:36Have been working hard on a more progressive style of play over the summer
01:41Something mandated by their new overlords
01:44See if they get a chance to display that this afternoon
01:47Well, the first thing you can see is when they don't have the ball out of possession United
01:50They slip into a kind of 4-2-4
01:52But the four aren't forwards, the four forwards are playing a first level of defence if you like
02:00It's Menou and Casemiro that sit and then there's a four across the line with the two centre ones being Mount and indeed Fernandes
02:09So that's the kind of formation they performed in the cup final they had
02:12They carried out the great success in the cup final and it looks very similar to me Sam when they're out of possession
02:19Playing out from the back is something they have been working on
02:22In pre-season it worked for them actually in a couple of those games Menou has shifted the ball on to Evans
02:30Sandra Montinez wandering in from left back into midfield to make up the numbers as well
02:39I think Ten Hard will know that despite the cup final result Manchester City went at full strength
02:43Are a class above and finished 31 points ahead of United last season
02:48It's a gap that Ten Hard has to close
02:52This is Johnny Evans who signed another short term contract to extend his second spell at Manchester United
03:15He's an absolutely terrific career hasn't he? He's been a great pro from start to finish, Johnny Evans
03:22I think a few years ago he would have envisaged playing in this fixture for Manchester United again
03:28This is everything you need to know about him on and off the pitch
03:31He's a community professional, here is Rashford
03:36Fernandes playing the ball against Oscar Bob it rebounds to Manwela Kanji
03:41Manwela Kanji, a man who missed the end of the season because of a fractured eye socket
03:47Mr. Copper America as well, he's back in goal for Manchester City today
03:51Despite lots of rumours about his future circling over the summer
04:01You could actually argue he would be as big a miss out of that City team than any of them
04:06Not many can do what Ederson can do with his feet
04:15You see the shape of United there, the 4, the 2 and the 4, it's amazing
04:18It's like a block of 4, we're not used to having a block of 4 in the middle of the park but you're starting as a block of 4
04:25It's interesting, as I said it went really well for them
04:29It's psychological as much as anything Sam as well
04:32If United manage to get a result again, that's two victories against City
04:36It then proves mentally to the players, to the fans, to the staff, to everybody that it can be done
04:46We're not used to having a block of 4 in the middle of the park but you're starting as a block of 4
04:50It's interesting, as I said it went really well for them
04:53It's psychological as much as anything Sam as well
04:55It's done
04:59United managed two wins and suffered three defeats on their pre-season tour
05:03There were some promising phases of play and that Liverpool defeat that they suffered at the end of that tour
05:09probably looks a little bit harsher on paper than the first half performance anyway
05:14Amar just wandering out of play with the ball
05:17I actually watched that game, they had chances as well, they could have scored a couple themselves
05:22It's difficult isn't it, it's the age-old problem, how much do you read into pre-season games
05:27Well, Tenhark says he doesn't like them
05:30They'll like this if he comes away with a victory
05:39Diaz is the captain today
05:43All right, skipping away from Mason Mount
05:46Kovacic
05:48Cut away by
05:50Tony Evans and Kovacic guides it back to Edison
05:54Yeah, it was worth the risk that ball from Kovacic
05:56He tries to fire it into Oliksar Bobic's feet and in doing that he'd have broken two of the lines there
06:03Just wasn't accurate enough for the pass
06:16Guardiola
06:18This is McAtee
06:22Guardiola being harassed by Mason now
06:26Shows some promising signs during pre-season in that inside right channel alongside Amad Diallo
06:33You could give you half a dozen United players it's a massive season for them, it really is
06:39I think if guys brush up Harry Maguire, Mason Mount certainly goes into that category
06:43Big, big period for them
06:44Jadon Sancho who's on the bench today
06:46Yeah, absolutely
06:48You could probably name another three or four
06:51Here's Doku
06:54Trying to take on Diego Dalot
06:56He did well, stood firm
06:58Manchester United looking to spring a counter-attack
07:01Not the most accurate of falls out
07:03That invites a bit more pressure
07:06Until Rico Lewis gives it straight back to United
07:09Yeah, a couple of slack passes there
07:11Dalot did well
07:13Then gives it away
07:14Lewis did the same
07:17Could be a little bit frustrated Pep Guardiola that he isn't able to use Jack Grealish today
07:22Another one who's shone on the pre-season tour
07:24Suffered discomfort yesterday after a training session
07:27And isn't involved
07:29Big season for him too
07:30Massive
07:34It's a really disappointing start to him obviously
07:36Any pictures you did see of Jack
07:38I thought he was very open
07:39And honest about
07:42Here's O'Reilly
07:44Bond's looking for the return from Harland
07:46It was Bond who started that move
07:47But now it's broken down
07:48Manchester United have got the chance to get forward
07:50Yeah, just a little bit of slack
07:51That was an opportunity to get a shot away
07:52But getting back to Grealish
07:53Open and honest about his disappointment
07:55Not making the squad, clearly
07:57And then any evidence I saw of him in the summer
07:59He's working his socks off
08:00And he's got a chance
08:01He's got a chance
08:02He's got a chance
08:03He's got a chance
08:04Any evidence I saw of him in the summer
08:05He's working his socks off
08:06So that'll be
08:07Clearly a massive disappointment from the injury
08:10Same applies to Marcus Rashford
08:11Who got a little bit
08:14Tied up in his own feet there
08:19He says he has been keeping his mind active
08:22Marcus Rashford
08:23By doing
08:25Jigsaws
08:28If Erik Zenhar can solve the puzzle of his
08:30On-off form
08:32That will go a long way
08:33To solving Manchester United's
08:34Goal scoring problems
08:35Which were a big issue for them last season
08:40Well, I'm far too polite to say
08:42He went to pieces in the box
08:43A couple of times last year
08:44But
08:47Yes, Bob
08:49Looking for Rico Lewis
08:50Rashford gets in front of him
08:52Jumps it away
08:53And Jared Gillett
08:54Who is our referee today
08:55Gives the first corner
08:56Of the Community Shield
08:58Yeah, getting back to Rashford
08:59He's one of these players
09:00You just want to see him play
09:01With a smile on his face
09:02I looked as though
09:03I'm a big fan
09:04But last year was a massive disappointment
09:07He just looked as though
09:08He wasn't enjoying his football, Salman
09:10Clearly it seemed to be the case
09:11Hopefully that's not the case this season
09:17Escobar to deliver
09:18This corner kick
09:20It's towards that near post area
09:21And it was a dangerous one
09:23Manchester United just about dealt with it
09:26It was a good running
09:27As Vardel tries to cut across
09:28Casemiro defends the post really well
09:33First half
09:46Oh, my goodness
09:49It's tied by Maguire
09:51De Alo putting it
09:53Into the path of Evans
09:54And then they looked
09:55A spring out on that right-hand side
09:57And De Alo almost kept it alive
09:59Referee coming to Rico Lewis's rescue
10:02He just catches him here, doesn't he?
10:05But it's good pressure from Diallo, he does well.
10:08He had the left arm round the neck, it doesn't help matters much.
10:11But he's certainly keen enough to close down.
10:16It may just be five league starts for Manchester United so far,
10:19but you get the feeling this could be a big season for him.
10:24Scored twice in pre-season versus Rangers,
10:27and Raul Betis, that magical moment at the end of the Liverpool game,
10:31it was probably Manchester United's moment of the season until they got to the cup final.
10:40What's his first taste of a Manchester derby today?
10:44It's probably a position that's up for grabs more than most in United,
10:48because I thought in wide areas they were a real disappointment.
10:50I know Garnaccio was the one that probably showed more consistency than any of them,
10:53but I thought in wide areas last year United were a major disappointment.
10:58I was looking into their cross data,
11:01and they were one of the worst in the Premier League last season,
11:05putting crosses into the box.
11:07I don't know what it was, but it doesn't surprise me,
11:09that would have been a tough gig.
11:11I think Hoyland improved as the season went on,
11:14but I did genuinely have a degree of sympathy for him,
11:17cos he's playing on a side that didn't effectively put enough crosses into the box.
11:21There are a few new faces and new bosses,
11:24David Gill and Michael Ederson are still around
11:27to provide a link to Manchester United's storied history.
11:34They've been there, seen it and done all that.
11:40You have a problem with O'Reilly there?
11:42Yeah, I put him under pressure, didn't I?
11:44Caught in two minds, wanted to play it long, didn't.
11:48O'Reilly again, floating the ball into the box,
11:51dealt with by Mount.
11:54BOOING
12:05Bobbed, tricking his way past Rashford.
12:10Trying to take on Menu, finding O'Reilly,
12:12just got it stuck under his feet.
12:14Manchester United needed Casemiro to tidy up for them.
12:18He did it well, but it wasn't that lovely.
12:20Little movement of feet from Oscar Bob there,
12:23he went by Rashford as if he wasn't there.
12:26Clever.
12:28Really easy in the eye, that was.
12:35There he is again.
12:37Reading McAtee.
12:41Cross a little bit loose.
12:50BOOING
12:57Nice movement, wasn't it?
13:00Shoulder moves the body to the right-hand side,
13:02back onto his left, there he goes.
13:05Bob on a wave.
13:07It's lovely to watch when it's not happening to you.
13:11He was possibly the pick of the youngsters on tour,
13:13he scored against Celtic and Chelsea,
13:15an assist against Milan,
13:17pretty influential in all four of his appearances.
13:20Julian Lescott was saying his decision-making
13:22on the ball has been really impressive
13:24on the tour of North America.
13:43Menu had a really good summer with England
13:46at the heart of their midfield.
13:49Without doubt, without doubt.
13:56The only player that's played in that Eurofinal
13:58to be starting today.
14:00Actually, City's England and Spain players
14:02haven't even come back yet.
14:05There's a bit of a collision here
14:06which seemed to hurt Harry Maguire.
14:08Looked accidental, I think that
14:11Haaland just tries to read the pass back, doesn't he?
14:15I'll be honest, I think Maguire knows what he's doing,
14:17just standing in front, he's well entitled
14:19to block a run from Haaland.
14:21But I think he probably forgot
14:23in the close season what size Haaland is.
14:27But just a wee reminder there,
14:28just in case you forgot, Harry.
14:30He was chopping wood, apparently,
14:32and now he's chopped down Harry Maguire.
14:40I think both of them felt the full force on that.
14:43Interestingly, with Erling Haaland,
14:45who did hit the bar ten minutes
14:47after half-time in that cup final,
14:49he's yet to score a Wembley goal.
14:52I saw that.
15:15Guardiola.
15:21As they're leading the press,
15:22Manchester United go up.
15:24I've seen Manchester City go over that.
15:26It's a high-five down Oak.
15:31I think they're ahead of both Mounts at Rashford.
15:33It's a high-five down Oak.
15:37I think they're ahead of both Mounts at Rashford.
15:51City toured without 14 of their first-team squad.
15:53Napled, Guardiola.
15:55To predict that there might be a slow start
15:57to the season.
15:58It's been a relatively sedate start
16:00this match, not too much goal.
16:02no action to talk about i'm sure he expects them to be up to full tilt by
16:06the time they play chelsea next sunday
16:17martinez
16:20regularly again and that's going to help manchester united he
16:24managed a chunky 648 minutes for argentina in the summer
16:29and they had a good summer didn't they they enjoyed the copa america win
16:35bearing in mind he'd only played 433 minutes for manchester not in 2024
16:42as a welcome return to fitness
16:48docu
16:51dalai wasn't allowing him to pass
16:56so
16:59so
17:18joker he's got past him this time
17:24speeding towards the united penalty area numbers arriving
17:28o'reilly peeling off wasn't too far away from it
17:31you know somebody did brilliant i'm not so sure he's crossed it when he did
17:35he went by dallo and mcguire as if they weren't there brilliant football
17:39and i just think he's got time an opportunity to take a touch there sam
17:43and actually draw somebody else to him he elected
17:47for the early cross really bright though
17:52he's gone in this time on the ball but he's given it straight back mcatee
17:59and he was flicked by casimiro on the way through they kept holding the ball
18:02manchester city once again jared gillett playing the advantage here
18:08i think this is why dallo was a little bit upset with docu
18:11oh it's only a nutmeg i couldn't let him pass
18:15and he's got a chance to make it a goal
18:18and he's got it
18:20and he's got it
18:22and he's got it
18:24and he's got it
18:26and he's got it
18:28and he's got it
18:30and he's got it
18:32and he's got it
18:35oh it's only a nutmeg i couldn't i thought it was the miss angle i wasn't
18:38sure i don't mind a bit of them that was the time and the opportunity i
18:41think he had a chance to just put his left foot in the ball and perhaps take
18:45it in and commit another defender but listen
18:48great play and buyer as we saw there dallo a lovely little nutmeg
18:52and of course mcguire who went to close on down second
18:56he scored in that cup final and i think
18:59probably felt he should have done better with
19:05one of six goals that he got last season
19:08jeremy docu
19:24hanging away
19:26dallo couldn't hold on to it
19:28it's very tight
19:30congested over on that far side
19:33harland trying to emerge with it but dallo can't
19:36proceedings
19:44Fernandez was looking over his shoulder as to who was going to back him up as he
19:48was chasing a kanji
19:50and then when he saw there was nobody there in support decided against it
19:53save his legs a little bit
19:55on the correct decision
20:02that's a good switch
20:06McAtee
20:10Docu
20:14Bob
20:16Kovacic
20:18Enrico Luis
20:20Manchester United flexing back
20:22to defend the edge of their penalty area
20:24Luis has got in behind Marcus Rashford who just switched off for a moment there
20:30and bursting into the box it might deflect kindly here for harland
20:34and another came out
20:36and it's in
20:38it's in
20:40it's in
20:42it's in
20:44it's in
20:46it's in
20:48it's in
20:50it's in
20:53and another came out
20:55there was no one in the middle to finish off the chance
20:59he did well didn't he, he attacked the area
21:01he just detected a little bit of hesitancy
21:03he was here, he kicks it in the half turn really well
21:06that's where he detects a little bit of hesitancy in the United defense
21:09he decides to try and exploit it and attack the area and he does it
21:13doesn't come to anything
21:15Bob is away again
21:22He's been a real threat so far, Oscar Bob, both wingers for Man City have caused United's
21:36full-backs issues.
21:37And here he is again, Bob taking on Martinez, and having a chance to shoot, would have been
21:44a beautiful way to start the season.
21:47He did the hard part ever so well, the finish, the execution, should have been better,
21:53cos he buys himself a little bit of time, the opportunity comes in,
21:56as you say, Martinez, and indeed Evans, takes it to the right,
22:00he gets himself his little bit of half-yard.
22:04The execution, the finish was poor, really.
22:08Never done before, it was very good.
22:11Most important part, not so.
22:16HALF-TIME WHISTLE
22:34And they come again.
22:36Simon O'Reilly trying to feed the ball into Haaland's path,
22:39didn't quite get the radar right on this occasion.
22:42He's a little bit unlucky, Haaland made the initial run,
22:45and that's where the ball went, but he made the run trying to lose the defender,
22:49went one way to spin the other.
22:53So you can understand the pass just being slightly off,
22:56but the movement was good again.
23:06Martinez.
23:08Katsumiyama flicking to Mason Mount,
23:11who just had a collision with Muscovado, in which he came off worse.
23:26Where's the Manchester United threat going to come from, Alec?
23:29At the moment they haven't counted much.
23:31No, they haven't at all.
23:33You've got to say the shape's been pretty good,
23:36halfway through the first half.
23:38They've given it away here, and McAteer has a big chance to open the scoring,
23:41he's hit the post!
23:44And a mistake on this near side,
23:47the Manchester United defence giving the ball away.
23:50McAteer couldn't make them pay on this occasion.
23:53He's a little bit unlucky.
23:56The execution, the finish right behind it, beautiful technique,
23:59started outside the post, didn't curl enough.
24:04I need to tell you, poor Manchester United defence,
24:07but the ball to him, I think it was Oscar Bob to McAteer's excellent.
24:11Because all he does, he rails at his path and says,
24:14have a finish at that.
24:15Doesn't have to do anything else, doesn't have to take a touch.
24:18Perfectly weighted, and as I say, he'll probably be a little bit disappointed.
24:23Ducat speeds forward in behind Dalot,
24:26tries to take on Maguire who holds firm this time.
24:32Casemiro getting caught into a knot, pressure from McAteer.
24:38Who had that chance?
24:42Poor here, isn't it, that's a really poor ball.
24:45Both centre-backs, I've got to say, it's a lovely little ball,
24:48looks kind of simple from Oscar Bob, but he just turns and flicks it into an area
24:52where McAteer can go and hit it first time, which he does.
24:55Goalkeeper's well beaten.
24:56There's a curl on it, can't see it from that angle,
24:58but believe me, there is, it starts outside the post.
25:01I've got him down, he's been a little bit unlucky.
25:03It's De Sandro Martinez in that left-back position
25:06that didn't produce the pass that Jonny Evans was waiting for.
25:10I'm not sure Jonny Evans should have made the run down
25:13further away from the goal.
25:15He should have probably dropped and protected his goal
25:19and offered him a pass with a more defensive-minded option.
25:25Martinez, like Luke Shaw, only coming back to Carrington at the beginning of this week,
25:29not too many training sessions with the team.
25:32Luke Shaw, not quite ready yet,
25:36despite the fact that he is playing the European Championships.
25:40A few marginal gains to be had all across the park for Manchester United.
25:45That is the new hierarchy, so Dave Browsford,
25:48Roman Barraga, the chief executive, Dan Ashworth, the sporting director,
25:52Jason Wilcox, who they took from Southampton,
25:56was once at Manchester City in the academy.
26:02The idea, trying to construct a way of Manchester United
26:07returning to the top table.
26:09They haven't really been challenging for the main prizes in football
26:11for over a decade now.
26:15They want to oversee the rebirth of the club.
26:18There is a younger recruitment policy, you get the feeling of that.
26:22Joshua Xherxey, 23, has come through the door for £35m.
26:26Lenny Yoro is still a teenager, but he's got the chance to be a very accomplished defender.
26:32Amat trying to get in between the centre-back and Vardy Olt.
26:37Not quite reaching on this occasion.
26:39That was a ball they played a lot in the cup finals,
26:41which a play, particularly from left to right,
26:44it's the first time we've seen it to date.
26:47I haven't seen much of United as an attacking force yet.
27:00Ashworth was involved in a delightful switch for the Mane goal, wasn't it?
27:05It was a great goal, a beautiful goal from start to finish.
27:09A little one-touch ball again from Fernandes to go.
27:12A great goal it was.
27:14Exquisite pass from him, which allowed Mane to finish it.
27:1962% possession for Manchester City so far in the game,
27:22that reflects in which way the pendulum has swung so far.
27:36He has had very little to do.
27:43He's got his own club out there, hasn't he?
27:47He's got a new club.
27:49And he's won a number of backroom changes,
27:52Erik Den Haag has revamped his entire backroom staff,
27:55two new assistants, one of them is Ruud van Nistelrooy.
27:59What can they do with his goal-scoring prowess in their team now?
28:03I think everybody could.
28:05What a goalscorer, one of the best.
28:07150 goals in 219 Manchester United appearances
28:11for Ruud van Nistelrooy,
28:13and the assistant manager alongside
28:15former Go Ahead Eagles head coach René Haka.
28:19Fernandes, pinching it off O'Reilly.
28:23Should have released it there, O'Reilly had a chance.
28:28Casemiro.
28:34Now Amman with a chance to run at Vardy,
28:36probably for the first time, and successfully doing so.
28:40And the attempted flick shot at the end didn't quite come off for him,
28:44but that's the first bit of menace we've seen from Manchester United.
28:47Brilliant, looks as though he's gone outside, back inside,
28:50and then just can't get out of his feet.
28:52That one there's brilliant.
28:54Takes it one-sided, comes back across Doku who can't foul him.
28:59And he just can't get out of his feet enough to get enough curl on it.
29:03Yep, a little wake-up call for City.
29:09Eric ten Haag has presided over a team that don't score too many goals.
29:14The injury to Hoyland probably not helping.
29:18A lot of fans have been talking about where the goals might come from.
29:21They weren't clinical against Liverpool,
29:23as we've already mentioned, last Saturday they missed a couple of chances.
29:26They were the lowest scorers in the top six in ten Haag's first season.
29:30They scored even fewer last campaign, Manchester United.
29:35I just wonder, Ali, whether or not an experience forward,
29:39someone like Ivan Toni, who is on the market,
29:42could be someone they took a chance on.
29:45You think about it, there's probably Ron Mars, Nolan Spurs,
29:49and a lot of other top teams looking for perhaps an out-and-out centre forward.
29:54I wouldn't disagree with you, I think United are into that category as well.
29:58Obviously it's a hamstring problem Hoyland's got, isn't it?
30:02Going to be out probably until after the international break in September.
30:10Yeah, I still think the point you're making is spot on,
30:13I think there's still a lot of business to be done between now and the close of the window.
30:22For a good few of the teams in the top flight.
30:24He says he might be one of those after party company with Julian Alvarez.
30:29That is some bit of business, by the way. Terrific.
30:33Doku.
30:37Vardy on.
30:49Toni just threatening to run in behind Kobe Meunier,
30:53and it's with Doku, Hoyland just made his movement.
30:57He's read it.
30:58Yeah, I don't think that's a bad ball at all from Doku,
31:01for Hoyland to come across and get in front of Maguire there,
31:04and he probably should have.
31:06Dalot does well to dispossess Doku on this occasion.
31:08Fernandes looks up.
31:11Gives it to Diallo.
31:13And Diallo trying to accelerate once again,
31:16finds Casemiro, goes for the return!
31:20And leaves it for Mason Mabb, but the ball wasn't quite right.
31:24And he'll be scratching his head as to why he didn't finish it off.
31:26I'm going to tell you something, that would have been one of the goals of the season already.
31:29That was absolutely beautiful from start to finish.
31:32Ahmed, Fernandes and Mount combining,
31:35I think it was Casemiro that played it through as well.
31:37That was top, top-class football.
31:40Should have resulted in a goal.
31:42Under normal circumstances, I would have given Ahmed a bit of stick for not finishing there,
31:46but effectively, he sees Mount with a potential tap-in,
31:50and I don't know if Mount wasn't expecting it,
31:52or the pass was too far in front of him,
31:55but the final thing just let him down.
31:57But it was a beautiful move, son.
32:00That little combination between Mount and Diallo,
32:03that's been happening a couple of times in pre-season on tour.
32:06You can see they've got a little bit of a relationship.
32:12And despite the fact that Manchester City really have looked the most likely
32:15of dominating the football, that's the best chance they've got.
32:17By a mile, by a mile.
32:19You're spot on with your assessment there.
32:21City have certainly dominated the possession,
32:23looked at better side, but that was for me the move of the game,
32:26and could have been one of the goals so far.
32:29Clearly very early, but that would have been an absolutely terrific goal,
32:32well-worked team goal.
32:35He was keeping tabs on the EFL last night,
32:37would have seen a couple of contenders already for early goals of the season.
32:43Here we see it, lovely overlap, the run comes in,
32:46that's a lovely little give and go, he's well onside,
32:48and it's just too much.
32:50I was looking to see if Mount was up for it, and he is,
32:53he's well up for it, but it's a pass that's too far in front of him.
32:57My initial thought was, was Mount maybe not switched on?
32:59And I got that one wrong, because he was,
33:01it was just the pass that was too far in front of him.
33:03But a beautiful move, that would have been a terrific goal.
33:07It might just give Manchester United a bit of encouragement.
33:09Yeah.
33:19A bit of a warning for Pep Guardiola,
33:21who is animated again on the touchline.
33:32It seemed to be a very generous move of his squad members
33:36who had been at the international tournament,
33:38saying, come back when you're ready.
33:43It's Fernandes with the effort,
33:45which cracks into the head of Ruben Diaz,
33:48who's gone to ground whilst Ederson was juggling with it.
33:56I'm not sure it's a great run from Casemiro,
33:59they're in behind the full-back.
34:01Under normal circumstances I would have left Rashford to go on with it,
34:04but the shot obviously blocked from Diaz,
34:07and that's clearly stunned him a little bit, which is understandable.
34:11He was talking in the build-up to the game about wanting to win,
34:14and that fitness concerns would be put to one side.
34:17Guardiola yesterday saying he wasn't fuelled by revenge,
34:20and that although he views this as a trophy,
34:23part of the process this afternoon would be about refining his team,
34:26seeing how the young players behave on the big stage.
34:30Yeah.
34:32A learning curve, isn't it?
34:35You mentioned the young players,
34:38still including Lewis, O'Reilly, Bob, McAtee.
35:09Ederson clear.
35:11Bob.
35:28Pep quite keen to use some of the younger players,
35:31because he knows just how long the season could end up being
35:36over the course of the campaign,
35:38which could end up going to 48 weeks for Manchester City.
35:42Yeah.
35:43He will need to rotate.
35:45It's his mouth.
35:46Out to Diallo.
35:50Diallo looking promising again.
35:53Dalot.
36:00Fernandes.
36:02Casemiro, Meunier.
36:03On to Fernandes, back to Casemiro.
36:05Space for Marcus Rashford!
36:07Just couldn't get his foot round it to curl it into that far post.
36:11It's another encouraging United move.
36:13Yeah, it certainly was.
36:15Intricate passing in and around the box.
36:18Casemiro involved again, Fernandes lets it run through him,
36:21that's a great ball again to open it up from Casemiro.
36:25Poor finish.
36:27I know what he's trying to do, we all know what he's trying to do,
36:30but the execution again.
36:32He's trying to curl it into that far corner.
36:39But it's interesting, and you touched on it.
36:42Well-known man there.
36:44He's another one with new responsibilities, isn't he?
36:46Absolutely.
36:47Confirmed yesterday that Lee Carsley is going to take interim charge
36:50of England's senior men's team for the September international break.
36:55Those games with Finland and Ireland,
36:57beginning at the Aviva in the country for whom Birmingham-born Carsley
37:00did play his international football, both live on ITV.
37:04Was that a surprise to you?
37:06Not really, no.
37:07I think they've just given themselves a bit of space.
37:11Mind you, if he does well, he gives them a decision to make, doesn't he?
37:15Yeah, he's got some players to work with that he's worked with before as well.
37:18Rashford, Mount, both of those who weren't involved in the summer.
37:22Maguire, who you'll be looking at today.
37:27What a ball that is.
37:28Fernandes.
37:31Amad Diallo, but this time not coming off.
37:34What a smashing reverse ball from that fella in your picture.
37:38Really was.
37:39He's certainly been bright in the last ten minutes or so, United.
37:43And a lot of it's been down to when Amad's been on the ball.
37:45Sami's looked pretty dangerous, he's looked confident,
37:48he looks as though he'd want to take people on, get himself involved.
37:52Last 15 minutes he's been very bright.
37:54There's always excitement when he gets hold of the ball,
37:56he is an entertainer, isn't he?
37:58Amad Diallo.
38:03Says he was having a conversation with Yaya Toure when he was on holiday in the summer.
38:12Gave him a few words of wisdom, the former Manchester City midfielder.
38:28All of a sudden it's Manchester City that need a little bit of a pep-up.
38:34Yeah, they won't be happy, will they, all this in the last 15 minutes?
38:40They had such a strong end to last season, didn't they?
38:42Which I think is why it was such a surprise that they
38:45struggled so much in the FA Cup final and lost that game.
38:48Well, they had to, didn't they?
38:51They were looking over their shoulder all the way.
38:53Fantastic end to the season, from our point of view.
38:5923 Premier League games unbeaten after December's defeat to Aston Villa.
39:04It's an incredible mentality that's required to do that.
39:10Here's O'Reilly.
39:14Massimero suggesting that it took a flick off the City,
39:17but it didn't.
39:19And Massimero suggesting that it took a flick off the City player
39:24on the way out of the playing surface.
39:48McAtee.
39:52Take on Maguire, leaves it for Jeremy Doku.
39:57McAtee trying to get it back to him.
39:59And has.
40:01Pushed him back a little bit further than I think maybe the Belgian wanted.
40:05Doku.
40:08McAtee with a chance to cross now.
40:10O'Reilly in the centre, so is Rico Lewis,
40:14who skips away from one challenge, trying to pull it back.
40:17And Manu's stuck to his task.
40:19Great body movement there from Lewis.
40:21Looked for an opportunity there.
40:23And he's got it.
40:25And he's got it.
40:27And he's got it.
40:29And he's got it.
40:31And he's got it.
40:32And he's got it.
40:33Looked for all intents and purposes, and he's only come back the way.
40:36And he goes, he puts his body weight on the left-hand side,
40:39shifts it all the way to his right, gets himself his half yard.
40:42Very clever, good movement, good body movement.
40:45Gets him his little bit of space there.
40:51Two Manchester United players just struggling at this moment in time.
40:54One of them's Harry Maguire down on his...
40:57haunches.
41:00That's a little bit there.
41:01Just a small body movement.
41:03That's for Kobe Manu.
41:05He thinks he's come back the way.
41:07And it ends up as good defending there from Harry Maguire,
41:09because...
41:11I think it was Nico Reilly coming in at the back post,
41:13or, sorry, the front post, just behind Maguire.
41:16So it was an important intervention.
41:20Casemiro has a issue,
41:22which is...
41:26the need of being dealt with,
41:27and Pacqualella thinks he's got a couple of things to deal with as well.
41:30Taking a tactical time-out here.
41:32Last treatment is applied to Casemiro to get his instructions across.
41:37We are still awaiting our first shot on target of the game.
41:44Eric Ten Haar trying to take the opportunity as well to get his players together.
41:49There is more football coming up on ITV over the...
41:52next few days and weeks.
41:56Starting off tonight, CFL highlights.
41:58All of the action from the championships and thrilling days
42:00leads Portsmouth finishing 3-0.
42:0295th minute goal from Aronson denying Portsmouth the first victory
42:06back in the championship in 12 years.
42:08That's ITV4.
42:09I think Portsmouth went ahead in the 92nd minute as well.
42:13They did?
42:14Yeah.
42:15And we've got Real Madrid and La Liga coverage starting next Sunday,
42:208pm, Sunday the 18th of August, ITV4 and ITVX.
42:29Well, three minutes to go before half-time.
42:31Who's going to be the happier of the two managers, you think?
42:35Erm...
42:37Ten Hag.
42:39There you are.
42:40Probably just because his side, in my opinion,
42:44have finished on the ascendancy a little bit.
42:47I think City, without anything like what we know they can,
42:52with a better side opening 20-25 minutes,
42:55without being excellent.
42:57And I think United have grown into the game
42:59and have created two wonderful chances
43:02with some close-knit football in and around the City box.
43:05So, if you put me in a corner, I'd probably say Ten Hag just.
43:10Almost pinching the ball and certainly putting City under pressure.
43:13Kovacic, who is a former team-mate of Mount's, escapes with the ball.
43:18McAtee makes a dart.
43:19Kovacic continues to carry it well.
43:21Doku.
43:23Trying one from distance,
43:25and it's very similar to the strike he had
43:27right at the end of the cup final,
43:29which caught out Ananda.
43:30Narrowly wide this time, he wants a corner.
43:33I think he might have a point.
43:34Does it clip?
43:36Armand's leg's going through here.
43:38I would suggest it does, yes.
43:40I think it comes off his left calf.
43:42There.
43:44Close, though, referee.
43:46He's got it.
43:47Left calf.
43:48There.
43:50Close, though, referee.
43:51Can't see that from his body position.
43:53I'm sure he is actually on the pitch.
43:55Yeah, so United, I'm just saying,
43:57I enjoyed Armand's last 15, 20 minutes or so.
43:59Sam, he's looked a little bit lively, I'd say he's confident.
44:02You can actually feel the United crowd
44:04getting a lot of a buzz when he gets the ball.
44:09Jared Gillick, by the way, refereeing today's encounter,
44:12had to step in last minute because of an injury
44:15to the appointed referee, John Brooks.
44:25He hasn't had too much to deal with so far.
44:34Not too many law changes for us to get our head around this year,
44:38which is good.
44:41I think we're both ecstatic about it.
44:46Fernandes.
44:48It's found Mainoop.
44:49Just tried to dolly that one back into a dangerous area
44:52but didn't quite get it right.
44:56Yeah, she'd probably done better there.
44:58Maguire was blocking Guardiola.
45:01An opportunity just to knock it back into a dangerous area
45:05for somebody to attack.
45:07Didn't get it right.
45:09Didn't get it right.
45:27Two minutes of added time at the end of the first half.
45:32We won't see as much added time
45:35as we did maybe in the early part of last year.
45:39There's going to be a little bit more latitude in that regard.
45:43I can sense you're not overly disappointed with that.
45:46Would that be correct?
45:48Last year we had a goal that sent us to penalties
45:5211 minutes into stoppage time.
45:56More entertainment the better for me, mate.
45:58No, I hear what you're saying, however.
46:06Maguire.
46:11This is Casemiro.
46:20It's another community shield that Manchester City
46:22failed to win.
46:23They haven't won one since 2019, which is quite remarkable, really.
46:28It's mainly because they do this.
46:30They are warming up still at this stage of the season.
46:34I did take your point, but at the same time,
46:37it's still a surprise.
46:49One or two of them are ready for the half-time break.
47:04He's had a busy first 47 minutes, Diogo Dalot.
47:08Looking to deal with Jeremy Doku.
47:15And that is the end of the first 45 minutes.
47:17We pointed out that there was quite a lot of youth
47:20on the pitch at the start of this game.
47:23We've seen a lot of young players
47:25who have come out of this game
47:27and come out of this game
47:29and come out of this game
47:31on the pitch at the start of this new season.
