00:00After 40 years, the national anthem of Pakistan has been played in the Olympics.
00:05Tomorrow, all Pakistanis will be overjoyed to see this moment,
00:09and will have forgotten their sorrows for a while.
00:12Arshad Nadeem is an amazing player.
00:14When he was asked, who did you consider your competition,
00:18he said that he only competes with himself.
00:23I am happy that Allah has given us respect in the Paris Olympics.
00:27My coach and I have put in a lot of effort.
00:29People ask me, why did you choose Nirai Chopra?
00:32Whenever I participate in a competition,
00:36I always try to beat Arshad Nadeem.
00:39When the competition started, I decided to beat Arshad Nadeem.
00:43I am thankful to Allah that I was able to compete with myself.
00:47Arshad Nadeem has competed with himself.
00:49Today, Usman Sami Uddin has written an amazing column.
00:53I would like to read an excerpt from it.
00:56He has written that when Arshad Nadeem is running,
00:59he only competes with himself.
01:01But at the same time, he also competes with many other factors.
01:05He competes with the indifference of this nation.
01:08He competes against the history of a country with less activity.
01:12Arshad Nadeem competes against the deteriorating tradition of sports.
01:16He competes against the lack of facilities.
01:19He competes against the lack of funds and the bad sports organizations.
01:24Arshad Nadeem competes against a legacy that does not exist in this field.
01:29Along with this, he competes against all the forces
01:32that are hindering the creation of such a legacy.
01:36All the sports associations in Pakistan are a very lucrative business.
01:41If a person is a retired government official,
01:44or if someone wants to be politically privileged,
01:46then they can fit him into a sports association.
01:49Let me quickly show you who is the head of various sports associations in Pakistan.
01:53The President of the Pakistan Hockey Federation, Shaila Raza Sahiba, is a politician.
01:58Abid Qadri Gilani is a former government official.
02:01He was made the President of the Pakistan Olympic Association.
02:03The President of the Pakistan Basketball Federation is a former government official.
02:07The President of the Pakistan Squash Federation is an Air Chief.
02:11The President of the Pakistan Football Federation is a former rugby player.
02:14Isam-ul-Haq Qureshi is a former tennis player.
02:17Thankfully, he has set up the President of the Pakistan Tennis Federation.
02:19Wajid Ali Chaudhry is a former athlete.
02:22He has set up the President of the Pakistan Badminton Federation.
02:25A former bureaucrat has set up the President of the Pakistan Volleyball Federation.
02:29The President of the Pakistan Bodybuilding Federation is a former national coordinator, Nekta.
02:33So, we have seen that very few people have set up a capable athlete in such bodies.
02:39Most of the time, it is a political position.
02:42The people of PMLN and all the politicians themselves confirm that these are political positions.
02:49Let me show you who are the people who are the heads of the sports federations all over the world.
02:54PT Usha is the President of the Indian Olympic Association.
02:58He is a former Olympian.
03:00Dilip Turki is the President of the Hockey Federation.
03:02He is a former hockey player.
03:04The President of the Chinese Olympic Association is a former sports officer.
03:08Apart from this, he is also a sports graduate.
03:10The President of the Korean Olympic Committee is a former sports administrator.
03:13The President of the Australian Olympic Committee is also a sports administrator.
03:16The President of Japan Olympic Committee is also a sports administrator.
03:19The President of the United States Olympic Committee is also a sports administrator.
03:22So, there are professionals who understand their work, unlike Pakistan.
03:27And these are the government institutions of Pakistan.
03:30What are the universities and educational institutions of Pakistan doing?
03:34Because if you look at the statistics,
03:36how many students study in universities all over the world compete in the Olympics.
03:42Take the example of America.
03:44In the Universities of America,
03:46in the Paris Olympics in 2024,
03:48a total of 592 athletes have participated.
03:50Out of which, every third athlete is representing a college or university.
03:56From Stanford, 37 students.
03:58From California University, 33 students.
04:01From Washington University, 28 students.
04:04So, these universities are playing their role.
04:0713 students are coming from Harvard University.
04:10So, in Pakistan, there is a shortage of students and Olympians from universities.
04:16In the first segment of the program, we have Usman Samiuddin and Vikrant Gupta with us.
04:21Both are renowned journalists.
04:23They have a lot of knowledge about sports and sports.
04:27Today, we will take advantage of that in the first segment of the program.
04:30Usman Sahib has also written a great article on Arshad Nadeem.
04:36In his article, Usman Sahib has said that this is possibly the greatest sporting achievement of Pakistan.
04:43I would like to ask him, why do people think that Arshad Nadeem's performance,
04:49what do you think, is possibly one of the greatest sporting achievements of our nation in the last 75 years?
04:56Thank you, Maria, first for the kind words.
04:58Maria, some people will always say that you are saying this after a day.
05:04So, obviously, in that moment, when everyone is euphoric and in a celebratory mood,
05:10such things are said.
05:12But if you really think about this achievement,
05:15I know that Jahangir Khan, you leave cricket aside,
05:18a sporting personality like Jahangir Khan has lived in Pakistan.
05:21He played 555 matches undefeated for 5-5.5 years.
05:26But my argument is that when Jahangir Khan came in 1980,
05:31when he had a breakthrough,
05:33he was coming in a sport in which Pakistan's legacy was already established.
05:37In that, many of his legends had already been there.
05:41Hashim Khan, Roshan Khan, they had a little infrastructure.
05:47There was coaching advice, there were people around them who could help them.
05:51And Pakistan had a history.
05:53They had seen that Pakistan's players had won before the British Open, World Open.
05:58Arshad Nadeem has come in a blank space.
06:02Athletes have been there before Pakistan, obviously.
06:06He has also competed.
06:07But at this level, the level at which Arshad Nadeem has taken his performance,
06:11at that level, Pakistan has no one in athletics, never.
06:14He is literally the starting point of what we are talking about.
06:18If we want to create the legacy of athletics in Pakistan,
06:21he is the starting point.
06:22So, before this, no one had come.
06:24And then, apart from that, the hurdles that he has overcome,
06:29just to get to the Olympics,
06:31just to get to a level that he can qualify for the Olympics,
06:34and then give such a performance in the Olympics,
06:36those obstacles come on cricketers, hockey players, squash players,
06:42but they always have an infrastructure and a community that helps them.
06:46He has come through a non-existent community.
06:50No one, no one.
06:51Javelin, very few people in Pakistan participate in javelin.
06:55So, from where he has come and the hurdles that he has overcome,
06:58I think in that context, and then, you know, the actual performance,
07:02he has improved the Olympic record twice in two of his attempts.
07:06That is a very rare achievement anywhere.
07:09Whether he is a Pakistani athlete or a US athlete,
07:11to better the Olympic record twice in your six throws is a phenomenal achievement.
07:16So, if you add all these things together, Maria,
07:19I just feel like I will say the same next week,
07:22I will say the same two years later and ten years later,
07:24that there has been no greater achievement in Pakistan than this.
07:27Right.
