Rappler website wins appeal to overturn shutdown order

Philippine Nobel laureate Maria Ressa welcomed on Aug. 9, 2024 a court decision to overturn a regulator's decision to shutter the news website Rappler, describing it as "vindication after a tortuous eight years of harassment." The Court of Appeals, in a July 23 decision made public on the same day, had ruled the Philippine Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) overstepped its authority in ordering Rappler's shutdown in 2018.Rappler's operating licence was rescinded in 2018 for violating foreign equity restrictions on media firms when it sold depositary rights to a US-based company. The SEC upheld its findings in 2022. Rappler was allowed to operate for the last six years despite the shutdown order.

00:00Oh we're doing live. Oh wow. This is much more organized than when Rappler welcomes
00:09the Court of Appeals ruling that eliminates a long-standing threat to its corporate existence
00:15on account of a flawed ruling by the Securities and Exchange Commission, the SEC, led then
00:20by Teresita Urbosa. When the rule of law prevails, justice is served. It's a vindication after
00:28a torturous eight years of harassment.
00:31Few countries in the world where libel is a criminal act, where journalism is whether
00:36the international rules-based standard still exists.
00:43This court decision, the latest in a string of court victories for Rappler, is a much-needed
00:49reminder that the mission of journalism can thrive, even in the line of fire, to speak
00:54truth to power, to hold the line, to build a better world.
