A Passenger plane carrying 62 people crashes in Brazil
Transcript
00:00Well breaking news in the past hour from Brazil where a passenger plane has
00:05crashed while flying to Sao Paulo. Local media outlets say it had 62 people on
00:11board. Let's get more on this story from our correspondent Emma Birchley who's
00:16following the updates. Emma what do we know so far?
00:20Yes 62 people on board four of whom were members of the crew. It was at 1.30 local
00:28time about half past 5 UK time that contact was lost with the aircraft. Now I
00:35must warn you we're about to show you some video of the moments as that plane
00:40loses control is spiraling downwards to the ground. So you can see it here I mean
00:46truly horrific. The plane is spirals and then hits the ground there's a pause and
00:55then a short time later a black plume of smoke rises into the sky. It came down
01:02on the city of Vinhedo in the state of Sao Paulo which is in the southeastern
01:08part of Brazil and what is very concerning is that this is a
01:16residential area we understand with a number of houses. At the moment it's not
01:21clear how many people have been killed and injured in this but you can see the
01:27flames there and there's been smoke coming from the fuselage. This an
01:32aircraft operated by a Brazilian airline called Vopass Linhas Areias based in
01:39Sao Paulo operating internal flights. This is an ATR-72 plane we're told
01:47traveling from Cascavel in the state of Paraná to Guarulhos in Sao Paulo.
01:54Seven fire crews sent but at the moment there has been no description no
02:03explanation of what may have caused this horrific crash which no doubt will
02:10result in loss of life and we know that already this evening or during the day
02:16in Brazil the President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva has asked a crowd to stand for
02:23a minute silence at an event in the south of Brazil. So an aircraft coming
02:30down at around half-past five UK time with 62 people on board four of them
02:37members of the crew.
