00:07I'm Jackie and today we'll show you our top 20 of the changes in remakes
00:12that made certain aspects of a character, story or theme worse.

00:25And as we'll talk about some plots, we warn you.
00:29Spoilers alert!
00:32Number 20. Gaston tries to kill Maurice, the Beauty and the Beast.
00:45Gaston is a misogynistic strongman determined to win the heart of Beauty.
00:50To do so, he wrongly threatens to imprison his father Maurice.
00:55His plan is to use Maurice's claims about the Beast against him,
00:59to put him in a local asylum and then to free him if Beauty agrees to marry him.
01:04It's a twisted plan, but at least it's not a murder.
01:08Well, everything changes in the new version of 2017.
01:12In this version, Gaston agrees to accompany Maurice,
01:15hoping to get his approval for Beauty.
01:18But Maurice refuses, so Gaston ties him up and leaves him to be eaten by wolves.
01:25This characterization of Gaston is completely evil,
01:29and makes him a much more one-dimensional villain,
01:32and in the end, less interesting.
01:46Number 19. The elimination of social criticism.
01:49Rollerball.
01:55We have a game to play. On three. One, two, three.
01:59Starring Chris Clain and LL Cool J,
02:03Rollerball is an action movie about a fictitious violent sport,
02:08and the people who practice it.
02:10And almost everyone who saw it hated it.
02:13It was criticized for its excessive dependence on action,
02:17and the author William Harrison, who wrote the original story,
02:21stated that he had no interest in watching it.
02:25Probably because he destroyed his original intention.
02:28Harrison wrote the original script in 1975,
02:32which contains morbid social comments about corporations,
02:36censorship and individualism.
02:38The 2002 remake completely eliminates these issues,

03:07What makes the original Halloween work so well
03:11is the dodgy and apparently supernatural nature of Michael Myers.
03:16Michael is an enigma throughout the movie.
03:19There is little information about his background,
03:22he has no personality and he doesn't have much motivation.
03:26He just wants to kill people.
03:28He is the incarnation of evil itself.
03:30And then there is the remake of Rob Zombie,
03:33which goes too deep into Michael's motivation and characterization.
03:38It also establishes that Laurie is Michael's sister,
03:41which has always been a controversial point of the plot
03:44that some do not consider canon,
03:46including the creators of the sequel of 2018.
03:49We understand what Zombie was trying to do here,
03:52but it didn't work. At all.
04:07Number 17. Arthur is more unpleasant. Arthur.
04:19Bill Brandt considers Arthur one of his greatest failures,
04:23and that says practically everything you need to know.
04:27Released in 2011, Arthur is a very annoying movie
04:31about a very annoying man.
04:34Arthur Batch, a man with the personality of a child,
04:37with misanthropic beliefs that hates everyone
04:40and is not afraid to insult them or laugh at them.
04:43Dudley Moore gave the audience a much more adorable Arthur
04:47in the original of 1981.
04:50He was kinder and funnier and pleased people
04:53despite his defects.
04:55It is a dangerous field to make movies with unpleasant protagonists,
05:00and this wrong remake failed.
05:09Number 16. Freddy's face.
05:18Let's be honest,
05:20they should never have remade Nightmare on Elm Street.
05:24Freddy Krueger is one of the most emblematic villains
05:27in the history of cinema,
05:29brilliantly played by Robert Englund,
05:32showing a horribly burned face
05:35that is literally taken out of a nightmare.
05:38David B. Miller's makeup is legendary
05:41and makes Englund almost unrecognizable.
05:45And then there is his mediocre appearance in the new version of 2010.
05:49Freddy's face is a combination of practical makeup and CGI,
05:53but neither is interesting.
05:56The makeup is too realistic and sloppy to be scary,
06:00and the CGI distracts terribly.
06:03At least they tried something new,
06:05but there is nothing better than the classics.

06:19Number 15. 3D conversion.
06:21Fury of the Titans.
06:23But I need your help.

06:27You're the son of Zeus,
06:29but we have orders.
06:31In this position we do not refer to any change in the remake,
06:35but to something that this remake did before its launch.

07:43The original movie is a classic of the genre called Caper.
07:47Its culminating chase of cars is undoubtedly one of the best in the game.
07:52It speaks intelligently of the British culture of the 60s
07:56and the role of Michael Caine as Charlie Crocker is infinitely fun.
08:02But like Rollerball, the new version of 2003
08:05eliminates most of the personality of the original.
08:09While it certainly isn't a bad movie,
08:12the remake's story was an illogical disaster
08:15and none of the characters left a legacy.
08:18It also lacked the British charm unique to the original,
08:22offering a very successful experience
08:24that was much more ingenious and grandiloquent.
08:27But hey, at least the Mini Coopers had style.
08:40Number 13.
08:41Excessive emphasis on horror.
08:43Pulse.
08:52There have been some bad remakes of Japanese horror
08:55over the years,
08:57and Pulse is undoubtedly one of them.
09:00Directed by the master of Japanese horror, Kiyoshi Kurosawa,
09:04Skyro is a unique point of view
09:07that is often very terrifying in terms of technology
09:10and its numerous social dangers.
09:12We say point of view
09:14because Skyro is more of a dramatic thriller
09:16than a horror movie,
09:18with emphasis on the subject and the characters.
09:21It's scary, of course,
09:22but like all great horror movies,
09:24the scares support the story and what it tries to say.

11:081974's Swept Away
11:10may seem like a romantic comedy
11:12about a man and a woman
11:14who end up stranded on a desert island.
11:17However, there is a subjacent theme
11:19about the conflict between capitalism and communism,
11:22and it acts as a comment
11:24on class and status in society.
11:28The new modern version of Guy Ritchie, however,
11:31lacks this political subtext,
11:34and Madonna,
11:35who plays the main female character,
11:37was quite criticized for her performance.
11:43What's left is simply a silly melodrama
11:46that got a 5% score on Rotten Tomatoes.
11:54Number 10.
11:55Number 10.
11:56Practically everything.
11:57Pinocchio.
11:58The lack of facial expressions in The Lion King

12:58Godzilla.
12:59Godzilla's original film,

16:32Although I'm Legend is an adaptation of the novel of the same name, it can also be considered
16:37a new version of The Last Man on Earth and The Omega Man, especially the latter.

16:49Ironically, although it is the only film that shares the name of the original material,
16:54Iron Man is the only film that completely ignores its meaning.

17:56However, the subsequent interpretation of Johnny Depp, the owner of Wonka Candy Company,

18:08While Depp gives his own touch to the character, many critics found that his performance was…
18:15strange, more like Michael Jackson than Willy Wonka.
18:19When asked, although he showed respect for Depp as an actor, Wilder said he found the
18:25performance and the film as an insult.

18:32Replacing Karate with Kung Fu, by Karate Kid.
18:36In 1984, the story of a disabled teenager who faces a group of idiots and beats them
18:42in a Karate tournament became a cult classic.
18:55The remake has an almost identical plot, although Karate has been notably replaced by Kung Fu.
19:02Take it down.
19:04Put it on.
19:07Take it off.
19:10And it on.
19:12While the remake is still an effective drama with an impressive fighting choreography,
19:17there is a pending question.
19:19Why would a film titled The Karate Kid turn around to Kung Fu?
19:24The change in martial art was so drastic that the film is actually called The Dream of Kung Fu
19:30in China, while in Japan and Korea it is known as The Best Kid.
19:39Given the misleading advertising, the American title should also have changed.
19:47Number 3.
19:48Abe Raham Lincoln.
19:49The Planet of the Apes.
19:51The ending of The Planet of the Apes is one of the most iconic of all time, when Charlton
19:58Heston realizes that the alien planet he is on is actually Earth after a nuclear war.
20:16Tim Burton and company tried to create their own iconic ending, but instead they gave us
20:22the opposite.
20:29Mark Wahlberg returns to Earth just to discover that the apes have already defeated him there.
20:36Or something like that.
20:37Wahlberg discovers that the monument to Lincoln has been replaced by a monument to General
20:43Faith, and is quickly surrounded by a police force of apes, none of which makes any sense.

20:54They're not going to Mars.
20:55Total Recall.
20:57Some things are better left untouched.
21:00Released in 1990, Total Recall is still a pretty popular movie, and presents Arnold
21:07Schwarzenegger in his best moment.
21:17So the decision to remake the movie just 22 years later was a bit surprising, to say
21:24the least.
21:25Even more surprising is the decision to change the setting from Mars to Australia, where
21:30the characters travel through a gravitational elevator that crosses the core of Earth.
21:39We understand that the remake was looking for a more serious tone, in quotes, but a trip
21:44to Australia is not as fun as a trip to the red planet.
21:48Just because you can do something doesn't mean you have to do it.
