00:00Even if you haven't seen Deadpool and Wolverine yet, there's a good chance you've heard that
00:04Henry Cavill makes an appearance. But what convinced the former Man of Steel to become
00:09the hero known as Cavill-reen? Henry Cavill's casting in Deadpool and Wolverine may have been
00:14nothing more than an outrageous cameo rumor at first. Nevertheless, the man who rose to fame
00:19for playing Superman makes a short, yet impactful appearance as a Wolverine variant. He's approached
00:25by Deadpool during his quest to replace his universe's version of the superhero and save
00:30his timeline from imminent destruction. Impressed by his physique, Deadpool walks up to the
00:35Cavill-reen and showers him with praise about how it just feels right. But nevertheless,
00:40the murk of the mouth is quickly and unceremoniously shown the multiversal door
00:44and forced to look elsewhere.
00:46"...I waited a long time for this team up."
00:48How did an actor associated with a rival cinematic universe sign on to be one of the many versions
00:54of the iconic X-Man? In an interview with Variety, Deadpool and Wolverine director Sean Levy
01:00revealed the reason Cavill easily agreed to the role, saying,
01:04"...I knew it was undeniable as soon as Ryan came up with that term,
01:07Cavill-reen. He said yes right away because he knew it would be subversive and playful."
01:12It was also with a lot of affection for him and his body of work,
01:16and playing with his legacy as a DC hero now that he's appearing as a variant of a Marvel hero.
01:21Levy shared even more details on Henry Cavill's cameo on the Happy Sad Confused podcast,
01:26revealing that the actor gave it his all while filming his ever-so-brief appearance
01:30despite the physical challenges he faced along the way. As he revealed,
01:34"...he was jacked up and he had that disgusting cigar in his mouth for hours
01:38and he was fully in it. I think he might have gotten sick to his stomach, if memory serves.
01:43It was a combination of oxygenated muscles, no actual oxygen going up into his nose,
01:48but he was a trooper and he was fabulous."
01:51Cavill played quiet about his cameo for a little while after the movie's release,
01:55but he did take to Instagram to post a screenshot of his character alongside
01:59a clever reference to a past controversy from the DC Extended Universe. He joked,
02:04"...to be safe, I shaved the mustache off for this one. Just the mustache."
02:08The post referred to the jokes that ran wild on social media after Cavill,
02:12who was rocking some facial hair for his role in Mission Impossible Fallout,
02:16had the mustache removed via CGI in Justice League, with disastrous results.
02:22Wolverine's death at the end of 2017's Logan served as a sad yet definitive way
02:27to close the book on the character, which is why Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige
02:31was initially against the idea of Hugh Jackman reprising his beloved role in the Marvel Cinematic
02:37Universe. Ultimately, Jackman agreed to join the cast of Deadpool and Wolverine, but if he hadn't,
02:42finding someone new to put on the claws would have been a very tall order.
02:46That said, Ryan Reynolds himself was quick to state that Cavill would probably be a solid choice.
02:51He told Collider,
02:52"...it was the first day of shooting and it was born of the reality which is,
02:55who on earth do you cast? I can't think of a more impossible and frustrating role to
03:00recast than Wolverine."
03:01But if you had to do it and replace a guy who's made it canon in every way,
03:06shape, and form onscreen and off wasn't available, Henry Cavill would be pretty good.
