Mr Parkes talks about the challenges and opportunities of cotton in Northern Australia.
Transcript
00:00My topic is cotton in northern Australia, challenges and opportunities and we want to
00:04go through all those in great depth. We're going to be here for a lot longer than the
00:0715 minutes allocated, but it's been a great start to our journey in northern Australia,
00:14but absolutely challenged all along the way. The most immediate challenge I have is the
00:21button clicker that I need to move to the next slide.
00:24So just a little bit of a brief background. As Simone has already mentioned, we've been
00:38incorporated in 2008 and we've been doing this sort of work now for going on 16 years.
00:44We've been involved in the management of more than 50 properties. The systems, however,
00:48are heavily dominated by rainfall during the summer period and there's always no rainfall
00:53during the winter. We want to grow rain-fed cotton. In general, that's exactly what we'll
00:57try to look for. In the southern systems, we need to follow country to build soil moisture
01:04profiles through the winter periods to try to get enough to go sustain us through those
01:08summer periods. So it's a pretty attractive way to look at things when we look at the
01:13rain-fed cotton and other crops that are in rain in the summer period.
