00:24better understanding.
00:26We strive to provide honest and thorough explanations for foreign language movies,
00:30and we hope for your positive response towards our channel with a like and subscribe.
00:35This keeps us motivated.
00:37Today, I am going to explain a South Korean supernatural horror movie, Exuma, and trust
00:43me, this is going to be an amazing and exciting explanation video.
00:47After watching this explanation, you won't need to go anywhere else.
00:51You will understand this movie in detail.
00:53So without further delay, let's roll the intro.
01:05Exuma is one of the highest-grossing South Korean horror movies of 2024.
01:10Currently, the IMDb rating of this movie is 6.9 stars out of 10, and on Rotten Tomatoes,
01:16it is said to be fresh at 93%.
01:19So you can imagine how good this movie is.
01:21The movie is written and directed by Jang Jae-hoon.
01:24In the beginning of the movie, we see two shamans, the senior Hwa Rim and his junior
01:29Bong Gil, who are traveling to Los Angeles by airplane.
01:33They are picked up by Park's accountant, who tells them about Park, a Korean-American businessman
01:39whose family moved to America centuries ago.
01:42Instead of going to Park's residence, they go straight to the hospital where they are
01:45introduced to Park's wife.
01:48The accountant asks Park's wife why these people have come here, even though she does
01:51not believe in shamans and rituals.
01:54However, the circumstances had become such that she had to seek their help.
01:59Park's newborn son is suffering from a mysterious disease with no cure, and Hwa Rim has been
02:04called here to cure him.
02:06Hwa Rim checks the child and performs a ritual, during which she senses Park's family, especially
02:11his father and grandfather.
02:13Park's father is paralyzed, and his grandfather died about 100 years ago, with his grave still
02:19in Korea.
02:20After this, Hwa Rim goes to Park's house and explains what shamans are, what they do, and
02:25how they deal with evil things.
02:28Park reveals that the firstborn in their family has always had problems.
02:32His elder brother committed suicide in a mental hospital, his wife had a miscarriage, and
02:37now his son's condition is very bad, which is why Hwa Rim was called to fix the problem
02:42at any cost.
02:44Hwa Rim tells him that this is actually a grave call, meaning the spirit of Park's
02:49grandfather in Korea is troubling them.
02:52Everything will be fine, but she will need help from more people.
02:55We then see Feng Shui master Kim in Korea, digging a grave with Young, the owner of a
03:00funeral home.
03:02Feng Shui means to bring the energy in balance.
03:06To understand the story, we learn a little about Kim.
03:09He explains that man is connected to the soil, he eats things grown from the soil,
03:14and after death, he becomes soil and land, and is then born again from this, which is
03:19a never-ending cycle.
03:21For the last 40 years, his work has been to find land for dead people, where they can
03:25find peace after being buried.
03:28Although many people think it is a fraud or superstition, for the rich, Feng Shui is both
03:32science and religion.
03:35Returning to the story, an old lady was buried in a land, and now her spirit she is haunting
03:39her family in their dreams.
03:42When Kim and Young dig her grave and check, they find that the old lady's body did not
03:46have teeth, which was wrong.
03:49If something is taken from the body after death, or if the things given to her are insufficient,
03:54the spirits come back.
03:56Also, if their final rites are not done properly and traditionally, those spirits get angry.
04:02The old lady's grandson had kept her teeth as a memory, but after putting them back with
04:07her dead body and burying her again, everything becomes normal.
04:11Kim and Young return home, where Hwa Rim and Bong Gil have returned from Los Angeles to
04:16meet them.
04:17They tell them about Park, a very strange but rich family with an issue that needs to
04:21be solved together, and all those issues are related to the land in Korea.
04:26Since this is Kim's expertise, he agrees to help Park.
04:31Back in Los Angeles, Park's mother questions him about digging up his grandfather's grave,
04:35which seems wrong to her.
04:37She fears it might hurt his grandfather's daughter who still lives in Korea and does
04:41not believe in these things, insisting that prayers and rituals will suffice.
04:46However, Park is determined to save his son and tells his mom that he will go through
04:50with the grave digging to save his son at any cost.
04:53The next day, Park returns to Korea, stays in a hotel, and meets Kim, who needs all the
04:59information about his grandfather's grave because the process of shifting a body from
05:03one grave to another is complicated and a lot of documentation is required.
05:09This process is called exhumation.
05:11Strangely, Park is reluctant to reveal much and asks them to complete the process as quickly
05:17and secretly as possible.
05:19Park takes Kim to his grandfather's grave, built on a mountain between borders where
05:24foxes are roaming around, which is unusual and a bad omen.
05:28They check the tombstone, which has no name but random numbers and incantations, finding
05:33it very strange.
05:35Kim questions Park more about the grave.
05:38Park explains that his grandfather did a lot for the country, so the grave was built here
05:42to honor him, suggested by a monk named Gisu.
05:46Kim finds it odd that such a rich family would have such a simple grave with no name, as
05:51if they wanted to hide the grave.
05:53Kim asks, If it's a royal tomb, then why is it so simple?
05:58To which Park tells him that around that time there were many grave robbers, so in
06:02order to save the grave in its place, it was kept simple.
06:06Kim found abnormality in everything Park said, as if he was not buying to his story.
06:12Kim senses something wrong with the place and decides they can't work there due to
06:15the powerful evil presence.
06:18And if they touch anything that belonged here, everyone's life will be in danger.
06:22They all leave the grave site and stop the exhumation for today.
06:25We then see them talking to each other where Hwarim suggests that to protect them all,
06:29she can perform a ritual which will protect them while performing the exhumation process,
06:34after which Kim agrees to continue.
06:36Park's aunt also arrives with everyone because her presence is necessary for the exhumation
06:40process.
06:41Hwarim performs a dangerous and intense ritual, involving five pig bodies, to protect the
06:47five people digging the grave.
06:49And finally, the grave is excavated and they see Park's grandfather's coffin.
06:55There were something written on the coffin that Kim also fails to understand.
06:59They decide to cremate the body as soon as the process is finished, as Kim believes that
07:04Park's grandfather's spirit is attached with the bones and proper cremation should be done.
07:09During the process, one of the grave diggers see a strange human-headed snake, which screams
07:14like a human when killed, triggering bad omens.
07:17The weather turns bad, and Kim tells Park to stop the cremation and move the coffin
07:21to Young's funeral home.
07:22Kim has many doubts on Park's explanations about his grandfather and his family.
07:27So he decides to go to a village near the grave mountain to ask about Gisu, finding
07:31that there was some other monk in the old temple, and no one had heard of Gisu.
07:36This raises more suspicions in Kim's mind.
07:39He also finds out about some grave robbers who stayed in that village searching for some
07:42grave which they believed had many treasures inside.
07:45A worker at the funeral home who also had the grave robber stories and thinking there
07:49might be treasure inside the coffin opens it, releasing the angry and vengeful spirit
07:54of the Park's grandfather.
07:56Hwarim saw it happening, who knows how dangerous this will be.
08:00Hwarim immediately starts a ritual to bring the spirit back to the grave, but the spirit
08:04first kills his son and daughter-in-law in Los Angeles and haunts Park, who is safe for
08:08now, but tormented mentally.
08:10Here we know that the vengeful spirit is not that strong and cannot enter the room by itself.
08:16Park then receives a call from Kim, who explains that his grandfather's spirit is out to destroy
08:21his own bloodline because they did not respect him, did not perform the annual rituals.
08:27The spirit is angry that his grave was left unnoticed.
08:31Park also hears knocking at his door and Kim asking him to open the door immediately.
08:36Now Park could hear two Kim's voices, one from the door and one on his phone.
08:42Kim on the phone warns Park not to open the door to the spirit disguised as him but to
08:46open the window only.
08:48Park opens the window, revealing the real Kim was at the door.
08:53The real Kim takes help from the housekeeping staff and gets the door open where he see
08:56Park possessed by this grandfather's spirit.
09:00And now it's revealed that how Park's family got so rich.
09:04During the Korean-Japanese War, Park's grandfather betrayed Korea and supported Japan for money
09:09and power.
09:11Now the vengeful spirit of Park's grandfather kills him.
09:14But before his last breath, Park says something cryptic that a fox has stabbed a tiger's
09:19backbone.
09:20Kim is unable to understand that as yet.
09:23The spirit then moves to kill Park's son, but at the same time Kim asks Young and Harim
09:27to cremate the body so that the spirit could be at peace and the curse ends.
09:32This ends the spirit's vengeance.
09:34After a while, Kim comes to know about a worker who was digging the grave who is having some
09:38hauntings.
09:40Kim visits a grave digger who tells him that he is haunted by a human-headed snake and
09:44he is dying.
09:45This all started from the day he killed that human-headed snake the day he was digging
09:49Park's grandfather's grave.
09:51To find out more about the matter, Kim decides to dig the grave deeper.
09:55They find a vertically standing coffin under the grandfather's grave.
09:59The coffin is sealed from outside and they don't understand why it was placed vertically.
10:05They take the coffin to a nearby barn, is owned by an old man, and Harim performs a
10:09protection ritual around it.
10:11So whatever evil is inside the coffin must remain inside.
10:15They go to see Park's auntie and try to inquire about the case and why her father was buried
10:19there.
10:20To which she replies that she has no idea.
10:24Then Kim tells her that was it a punishment that her father's grave was kept here because
10:28he betrayed Korea in the war.
10:30Here she tells them that Gisu was not Korean, he was Japanese, and she also can't understand
10:35why they buried their own man at such place.
10:38Kim tells her that the numbers engraved on the tombstone are actually coordinates but
10:42Park's aunt has no idea about the whole matter.
10:45Now at night, when everyone is asleep, the old man who is the owner of the barn where
10:49the vertical standing coffin is placed, hears some noise from his barn.
10:53The scene then shifts to Bong Gil, who is awakened, and see the old man injured and
10:58murmuring strange things, to which Bong Gil quickly performs spells and controls the situation.
11:04He goes out and see a 7-foot figure standing outside the barn and eating the old man and
11:09pigs.
11:11Bong Gil quickly calls for Hwarim, who we see is taking guidance from her grandmother's
11:15spirit who was a famous and strong shaman of her time.
11:19The moment Hwarim hears Bong Gil's call out, she moves to go for his help, but her grandmother's
11:24spirits hold her back as she sensed grave evil.
11:27Bong Gil then goes out to call everyone, but at the same time the samurai comes back
11:30to the barn and ask who is there, Hwarim tries to trick him by saying that she is a forest
11:35spirit and his servant.
11:37When the samurai ghost finds out that Hwarim is a human, he approaches to kill her.
11:42Bong Gil tries to protect her by stabbing him, but nothing happens to him that shows
11:46he is a very powerful evil entity.
11:48He hits Bong Gil on his liver and leaves him hurt.
11:51By then, Kim and Young also reach the barn and by looking at the sight, they are terrified.
11:57The demon general then approaches to kill Hwarim, but right at that time dawn breaks
12:02and instantly he turns into a fireball and disappears.
12:05They all have visions upon his disappearance that has the story of this demon.
12:09This demon's element is fire and is attached with that grave.
12:13His powers are stronger at night.
12:15Bong Gil is then rushed to the hospital in critical condition and Hwarim was deeply saddened.
12:21Kim also feels sorry for not being able to solve the matter earlier.
12:24Kim then decides to go to the grave and finish their job because this evil could not be left
12:29on loose.
12:30But first they must go to the old man's house to see if they can find something there
12:34who told them about grave robbers who stayed at his barn.
12:38There they find some stuff that belonged to the grave robbers.
12:41They realize that the grave robbers actually followed Taoism, which was also something
12:45unusual.
12:46Back at the hospital, Bong Gil wakes up where Hwarim immediately notices that he is possessed.
12:52Bong Gil was like a servant of the demon general.
12:55Bong Gil also speaks that the demon general is guarding something important in the grave.
13:00That means something extremely important was buried there which was guarded by the demon
13:03general and was covered up by Park's grandfather's grave.
13:07Means everyone was guarding something very important.
13:10Hwarim rushes to Kim and informs him about her findings from Bong Gil.
13:14Kim further digs the grave and locates the demon general asleep.
13:18That means he has no powers during the day and the coordinates on the tombstones were
13:21there for him.
13:23At this point in the movie, we see a flashback opening up the secret of the story and the
13:27important thing demon general was guarding.
13:29Do you remember what Park said before he died that fox has stabbed tiger's backbone?
13:34But what is the meaning of that?
13:36That means the fox is Gi-Soo who stabbed the tiger which is Korea.
13:40Gi-Soo planted special spellbound metal rods in different places of Korea so that the energy,
13:46natural balance and prosperity which flow within Korea get disrupted.
13:50The grave robbers were not looking for treasure.
13:52They were actually Korean patriots who were taking out these rods and destroying so that
13:56their motherland may gain its true energy and prosperity.
14:00But unfortunately, they were not able to locate the last metal rod which was buried here.
14:05And that's the reason Gi-Soo had Park's grandfather's grave placed there so that
14:08no one could touch a royal grave.
14:11And if by chance anyone finds the grave, the demonic general will not let anything happen
14:15to the rod.
14:16Now, since they know the whole truth, they must end this curse.
14:20At the same time Hwa-Rim wants to protect Bong-Gil from the demon general's control,
14:24she decided to leave her sister with him so that she can control his possession with spells.
14:29She also realizes why the demon general could not possess her is because she had some Buddhist
14:34incantations tattooed on her body.
14:37They all then decide to make the same incantations on their bodies to stay protected.
14:42Hwa-Rim makes a plan to deceive the demon general at night, and Kim and Jung will dig
14:46out the rod and destroy it with horse blood.
14:49When night falls, the demon general demon general wakes up in search for Hwa-Rim and
14:53falling for her trap.
14:55At the same time, both Kim and Jung were digging for the rod who were unsuccessful in locating
14:59it underneath the grave no matter how much they dig.
15:02Here, the demon general starts telling Hwa-Rim that this is a war, what Gi-Soo did, and how
15:07he did it.
15:08But soon he realizes that it's a trap.
15:11He then goes to kill Hwa-Rim, who is saved by her grandmother's spirit.
15:15You must be wondering how that is even possible.
15:17Well, here it is believed that native spirits are respected and are more stronger, and her
15:22grandmother was a very powerful shaman of her time.
15:25The demon general then leaves for the grave and almost kills Kim, but Hwa-Rim followed
15:29him and tries to rescue Kim by pouring horse blood on him, which slows him down.
15:35The demon general then starts chalking Kim and Jung with his powers.
15:39Kim then starts having the demon general's visions.
15:42Here my friends, the whole story will unravel.
15:45Kim sees Gi-Soo, who was a powerful shaman of his time.
15:49He knew that even if one rod was kept hidden, Korea would never prosper, so he forged a
15:53way to keep that one rod safe.
15:56He took the dead body of a Japanese general and performed some rituals by putting different
16:00body parts inside.
16:02He then takes a katana that was used to take 10,000 lives.
16:06He forged it with fire and spells and pierced it through the general's body, stitching
16:10it to his neck.
16:12General's body was now host to 10,000 tormented spirits, and this body is none other than
16:17the final rod itself.
16:19Upon realizing, Kim quickly takes a wooden stick, soaking it with his blood and stabs
16:23the demon general.
16:25Here we know that in Taoism, if you join opposite forces, they both eliminate each other.
16:31Since wood is opposite to metal, that's why Kim smartly used it as a weapon.
16:35The demon general finally perishes and Bong-gil possession also removed.
16:40I hope you noticed that the human-headed snake was a symbol of water, and we know that water,
16:45earth, metal, and fire make balance of world.
16:48But when the gravedigger killed the human-headed snake, the balance was disturbed and the demon
16:53general was awake and started to haunt the gravedigger.
16:56So water element was ended with the human-headed snake.
17:00Fire and metal was the demon general him and to destroy him water and wood was needed.
17:05It is said that the Koreans fought with wood, blood, and sweat.
17:09And that's how the demon general is eliminated.
17:12With the general's ghost destroyed, Park's family curse ends, and balance is restored.
17:18The movie hints at a continuation, setting up the story for a potential sequel.
17:22That's the detailed explanation of Eczema.
