00:00Breaking news now on the news at 10. A 5.2 magnitude earthquake strikes Kern
00:05County rattling much of central and southern California tonight. Good evening
00:10I'm Micah Ullman. And I'm Mary Beth McDade. Well the quake struck at 909 this
00:14evening about 10 miles from Bakersfield. It was followed by a series of after
00:19shocks and tonight fire departments all across the region are deploying their
00:23resources to check for damage. The LAFD is deploying personnel from all 106
00:29neighborhood fire stations to conduct a survey by land air and sea and examine
00:35critical infrastructures. The earthquake was centered about 18 miles southwest
00:39of Bakersfield in an area known as Mettler. If you're familiar with the
00:44area, it was felt across a wide swath of central and southern California
00:48tonight was shaking reported from Fresno to Santa Maria to the Los Angeles
00:53Basin and the inland valleys. Dr Lucy Jones seismologist says this area is
00:58prone to earthquakes. The location is at the southern end of the Central
01:02Valley. So it's very near where we had a magnitude 7.5 in 1952. However it does
01:09not appear to be on the same fault as that earthquake. That was the Whitewell
01:13fault which dips in a different direction and it doesn't look like this
01:17earthquake was associated with any known fault is our preliminary assessment. It
01:23is having a lot of aftershocks. We've already had two above magnitude four and
01:29four above magnitude three between magnitude three and four. So that's a
01:33pretty active sequence for for this very short amount of time since the
01:38event. And to be clear, there are no reports of damage or injury, significant
01:43damage at this point again, a 5.2 magnitude south southwest of
01:47Bakersfield. Meteorologist fear Jimenez for the look at the map for us tonight.
01:51Yes, thank you, Micah. So as you go ahead and take a look at the map, this
01:54is where we are. This is L. A county. So you have to take a drive up the I five
01:58through the Great Vine to hit the region where that earthquake actually
02:02struck. When you look at this map, anything in red indicates that these
02:07are earthquakes that have taken place within the last hour. When you see
02:10yellow on this map, that means 12 hours and green past day. If you see a blue
02:16dot, that means it's been much longer than that. And as we continue to zoom
02:20in, Dr Lucy Jones mentioned that there were a lot of aftershocks already
02:25recorded. And as you can see again, multiple earthquakes around the region
02:30after socks, I should say around the region. And when you look at these
02:34circles that indicates the magnitude. So the smaller ones indicate smaller
02:39magnitude or lesser magnitude. And of course, the bigger the circle, the
02:43greater the magnitude. That's what it looks like on the max stopper map, and
02:46I'll send it back to you guys. All right, Vera, thank you. On the phone. We
02:50have L. A. Fire Department spokesperson Margaret Stewart. Margaret, good of you
02:54to take the time. What can you tell us in regards to the L. A. Fire Department
02:58and what you may be doing as a precautionary measure of nothing else?
03:04As you mentioned already, we do enter the earthquake mode when there is a
03:10noticeable effect of earthquake here. So all of our stations, all 106, go out
03:17first to ensure that none of our apparatus are trapped into a fire
03:22station if the doors are damaged, etc. So the first check is to make sure they can
03:29all safely leave the facility. And then they're going to conduct a survey
03:33through their district. There are some that have specific infrastructure within
03:41their district that they have to ensure that is not damaged, whether it's freeways,
03:46power, schools, etc. So they're going to conduct that survey, and then they report
03:53through their battalion. And it happens across the city, and all of those reports
03:59filter up through the chain of command so that we have a comprehensive review
04:05of any potential damage throughout the city. And Margaret, this is Mary Beth
04:11McDade here as well. I'm just wondering, at this point, have you guys seen any
04:15damage? And are you only on the ground assessing? Are you guys also up in the
04:18air? So first, fortunately, we have not had reports of any damage, and we're
04:26completing that earthquake mode right now. So the final reports have come in
04:30with no damage. So all resources are what we call rehousing into the station. And
04:38our air ops is also a part of that earthquake mode survey. All right. All
04:43good news to report from L.A. City Fire. Margaret Stewart, thank you for taking
04:47the time. Again, a 5.2 magnitude quake roughly 20 miles south-southwest of
04:52Bakersfield. It hit just after nine o'clock tonight in an area known as
04:56Mettler. You may be familiar if you drive the Grapevine. It's just north of
05:00the 599 split as you're heading north. So it would be just west of the 5 Freeway.
05:05Again, no reports of major damage or injuries at this point, but certainly
05:10felt and nerves rattled across Southern California into Los Angeles County and
05:16beyond. Yeah, absolutely. We even felt it here in the newsroom. We all looked at
05:19each other going, Oh, but fortunately nothing like they felt up there in
05:23Bakersfield tonight. All right, well, we will continue to follow this breaking
05:27news and bring you updates as warranted.
