00:00:00I want to leave I want to live I want to live I want to live this life instead
00:00:12Live from historic Fenway Park in Boston, Interleague Baseball on MLB The Show.
00:00:19It's the Cincinnati Reds and the Boston Red Sox.
00:00:22John Shomby and Chris Singleton on the call.
00:00:25And Chris, we've got an opportunity to watch one of the true superstars of the sport.
00:00:29Number 29.
00:00:30Always exciting to see him in action.
00:00:32And it seems like he consistently finds a way to impact the game.
00:00:35Yeah, Boogie.
00:00:36It's offensively at the plate, defensively when he's on the bases.
00:00:40And this guy's just a heads-up player, but he's got so much talent.
00:00:43And he makes the most of that.
00:00:44I believe it starts with his preparation because you never see him give away an attack.
00:00:54About to get started here.
00:00:56Today's starting pitcher, number 21.
00:00:59Well, he brings into this one an excellent strikeout-to-walk ratio on the season.
00:01:03And when you consider the amount of swings and misses that he gets,
00:01:06the fact that he's not issuing free passes,
00:01:09that's going to make him more economical in his pitch count,
00:01:12allow him to move into the middle and deeper part of ballgames.
00:01:16So we'll see if that remains true in this one.
00:01:19The center fielder, number 9.
00:01:27And here it comes.
00:01:30Pitch misses.
00:01:32And we're underway from Fenway.
00:01:38First pitch, 7-10.
00:01:41The 1-0.
00:01:44And that's outside.
00:01:48In the air to left center.
00:01:51Makes a nice running catch.
00:01:54And there's one away.
00:01:56Take a look at the lineup.
00:01:58They're dealing with a top-level arm on the mound.
00:02:01Look, I think when you've got a guy that's this talented on the mound,
00:02:04you've got to find ways to disrupt his rhythm,
00:02:07make him uncomfortable a little bit.
00:02:09The guys that can handle the bat and perhaps, you know,
00:02:11bunt, bunt for a pitch,
00:02:13get him moving off the mound.
00:02:15If you're in the box and he seems to be just in a flow,
00:02:18step out, mess up his timing,
00:02:20somehow try to get in his head a little bit.
00:02:22And then when he does come in the zone,
00:02:24you may only get one pitch.
00:02:26You better not miss it.
00:02:28Barry Larkin watches that one for a strike.
00:02:31Standing in here with one down.
00:02:33In the air, right field.
00:02:35Rice moving under it.
00:02:37Makes the grab, and there's two gone.
00:02:40Ed Singey, as a team, you need to make the most
00:02:43of the very few opportunities he's going to give you, right?
00:02:46Absolutely.
00:02:48And you know, if you don't get to guys like this a lot of times early,
00:02:51once they really settle in,
00:02:53it's going to be the later innings that they hand that ball over
00:02:55to a reliever if they do at all.
00:03:04That one is absolutely belted.
00:03:08That's back there.
00:03:10Out of here.
00:03:37That's the exact definition of hitting the ball where it's pitched,
00:03:40taking that outside fastball,
00:03:42and driving it the opposite way out of the ballpark.
00:03:45You want to bottle that type of approach.
00:03:53In now for the Reds, Tony Perez.
00:03:56He's got the power, but great contact skills.
00:03:59One of the best contact hitters in the game.
00:04:02And the first pitch misses for ball one.
00:04:08Two outs.
00:04:13When you get ahead in the count,
00:04:16there's no doubt that the success rate goes up.
00:04:19And that's what he's been doing.
00:04:21It's made a big impact for him in recent games.
00:04:24The 2-0 is in for a strike.
00:04:27Pretty rare location right there, right down the middle.
00:04:30This guy paints the edges.
00:04:33I'm not sure if you're going to see that pitch again as a hitter.
00:04:36The 2-1.
00:04:543-1, and he couldn't come up with it.
00:04:57I don't think he really wanted the pitch to him right there anyhow.
00:05:01Runner at first, and two away.
00:05:04Runner at first, and two away.
00:05:06And the batter now is Joey Votto.
00:05:12That hits the dirt. 1-0.
00:05:27Left-hand batter waits.
00:05:30Pitch misses. 2-0.
00:05:33He's really working him away this at bat.
00:05:35Sometimes take a little bit off velocity.
00:05:37Try to get a rollover. Something on the ground.
00:05:39Stay away from that big hole on the right side of the infield.
00:05:452-0.
00:05:48And that one wrapped foul.
00:05:58Kicks and deals.
00:06:01Two balls, two strikes to count with two outs.
00:06:15The pitch.
00:06:18Swing and a pop-off in foul ground.
00:06:21Flashes the leather on the running catch.
00:06:24And that'll do it.
00:06:32Back inside Fenway Park.
00:06:35On the hill for the Reds, number 34.
00:06:38And Chris, pitching on the road has not been particularly kind to him.
00:06:42Yeah, and you don't want to be too quick to say that he can't pitch on the road.
00:06:46Sometimes, you know, it's just a matter of luck.
00:06:49It's not having a field.
00:06:51Difference between the bullpen mound to the mound.
00:06:54Out there on the road.
00:06:58Don't know what it is, but I know this.
00:07:01He's got good enough stuff to overcome and get it done on the road as well as at home.
00:07:04So we'll see what he's able to do in this one.
00:07:07And a foul ball.
00:07:11Next offering is in for a strike.
00:07:15Next offering is in for a strike.
00:07:36The pitch.
00:07:39Swing and a pop-off in foul ground.
00:07:42The pitch.
00:07:45Swing and a miss.
00:07:48And he's down on strikes.
00:07:51And now one away.
00:07:54Very frustrating right there as a speedy potential base runner.
00:07:57With two strikes, you just struggle to put the ball in play.
00:08:00You don't even have to get a hit at that point.
00:08:03You can help your team just by reaching on an error.
00:08:06But some way, you've got to find a way to shorten up the swing and put the ball in play next time.
00:08:09And a foul ball.
00:08:25And now the 0-1.
00:08:28Swing and a miss. He was late. Strike two.
00:08:31Well, you've got to find a way to catch up to that pitch.
00:08:34Perhaps shorten the swing, eliminate the stride.
00:08:37And down the middle, you're saying to yourself, how did I miss that pitch?
00:08:40You've got to make a quick adjustment.
00:08:49The punch out there. Down on strikes.
00:08:52And he knew it.
00:08:55Well, any time you can punch out the top two guys in a lineup to start an inning,
00:08:58you've got to be feeling pretty good out there on the mound.
00:09:01Because when you think of just having a distraction,
00:09:04table setters on the base paths, and all of a sudden you're dealing with a number three hitter,
00:09:07any distraction can cause you to serve up a cookie.
00:09:10And instead of it being a solo shot, it's a two or three run homer.
00:09:13Ted Williams in the box now as he leaves that one up high.
00:09:26Righty delivers.
00:09:29Swing and a ground ball up the middle. That's a base hit.
00:09:33Just kept it simple.
00:09:36Played pepper with the middle of the infield and took it back where it came from.
00:09:39And there's just no one there to knock it down.
00:09:47David Ortiz getting ready to hit.
00:09:56First offering misses the mark.
00:10:00First offering misses the mark.
00:10:18See the velocity. 97 with that fastball.
00:10:222-0.
00:10:25This one ripped, but fouled to the right.
00:10:28A little early on that fastball. I'm sure the pitcher taking a note.
00:10:31Look for an off-speed pitch on this next one.
00:10:38At the belt and fires.
00:10:41And a curve misses outside.
00:10:45Good plate appearance there.
00:10:48Able to take the walk.
00:10:51Not what he wanted to do there, Boog.
00:10:54That keeps this inning alive and gives this offense a good chance
00:10:57to cut into their deficit.
00:11:00So 2-1 with 2-1.
00:11:03That's what we're talking about.
00:11:06That's what we're talking about.
00:11:09That's what we're talking about.
00:11:13So 2-1 with 2 away.
00:11:15And next for the Red Sox, number 8.
00:11:20And there's a foul ball.
00:11:31First and second, 2 down.
00:11:35Next offering is downstairs.
00:11:38That's big right there, being able to check your swing.
00:11:41Think about the count swing.
00:11:44Instead of 0-2, he's sitting 1-1 against a really good arm.
00:11:50And a pitch.
00:11:53So a foul ball makes it 1-2.
00:12:05So the tying run at second.
00:12:08Got him looking.
00:12:11And that will end the inning.
00:12:14On to the second for Fenway Park.
00:12:17It's the Reds' 1 and the Red Sox nothing.
00:12:35Top of the second, they're the batter now, Eric Davis.
00:12:38Leading off for Cincinnati.
00:12:41The designated hitter, Eric Davis.
00:12:44A wide kick to pitch.
00:12:47Just missed.
00:13:04The wind and the pitch.
00:13:07And a swing and a miss there.
00:13:10They can live up in the zone all game if guys will chase it.
00:13:13That's just too much velocity.
00:13:16Hitter's got to look down in the zone.
00:13:19And a pitch.
00:13:22In there.
00:13:25And so now 1-2.
00:13:28Love how vocal the umpire is today.
00:13:31As to the conviction in the call.
00:13:342-2.
00:13:52That one fouled off.
00:14:02Now that smack to right center.
00:14:05Makes the grab.
00:14:08Tracks it down after the long run.
00:14:11Not fooled at all right there.
00:14:14He was clearly all over it.
00:14:17But sometimes you hit it too hard and right at someone.
00:14:20You're looking for one of those loop hits.
00:14:26George Foster stands in here.
00:14:30Leaves that one off the inside.
00:14:49A 1-1 is cut out and missed at a pitch.
00:14:52Upstairs.
00:14:55And a righty deals.
00:14:58To the right side.
00:15:09And it's even up.
00:15:12See how the catcher wanted that pitch up and in.
00:15:15Wanted to try to tie him up.
00:15:18That's the one thing we're seeing.
00:15:21That high fastball.
00:15:24You have to get it up there because of how hitters have
00:15:27to be.
00:15:34And the next pitch is way outside.
00:15:37These first two hitters really making them work out there.
00:15:40Already 14 pitches this inning.
00:15:45Eighth pitch of the at bat coming up.
00:15:52Cut out and missed.
00:15:55Typically that high fastball if it's close to the top of the
00:15:58strike zone a hitter if he's prepared for it can get to it.
00:16:01But that one just had that little jump at the end.
00:16:04Which indicates there's a good spin rate on it.
00:16:07And it didn't decrease in velocity as that hitter's internal
00:16:10clock would expect it to.
00:16:13And that's why you see the swing and miss.
00:16:16Next to hit Pete Rhodes.
00:16:19In there at it's 0-1.
00:16:26And a strike right through there.
00:16:29That one at triple digits.
00:16:40Next pitch in the dirt.
00:16:43And the count is 1-2.
00:16:47And the 1-2 misses to even the count.
00:16:50This guy's a fun guy to watch taking it bad.
00:16:53He just battles up there.
00:16:56He doesn't take a pitch off at all.
00:16:59Makes it so difficult on the pitchers out there.
00:17:02You can tell he's a good pitcher.
00:17:05You can tell he's a good hitter.
00:17:08You can tell he's a good hitter.
00:17:11You can tell he's a good hitter.
00:17:14Makes it so difficult on the pitchers out there.
00:17:17You can tell they get frustrated with how long it takes to put him away.
00:17:27The 2-2.
00:17:32Line drive and that's a base hit out of the center field.
00:17:39Gotta love the resiliency shown in that at bat.
00:17:42That's about as textbook as it gets.
00:17:45Got his stride and load out of the way early.
00:17:48He stayed inside that ball and squared it up out front.
00:17:51Man, that was like he was in the cage hitting off a tee.
00:17:54And now they've got some speed on first.
00:17:57So we'll see if they try to get him into motion.
00:18:00Joe Morgan at the plate and takes high there.
00:18:12Pulls out one foul.
00:18:24And a pitch.
00:18:27Hit well, right field, way back and gone.
00:18:42Go right back, go right back, go right back.
00:18:53That one was a hanger and pitchers typically don't get away with making a mistake like that.
00:18:58And right there, he made him pay.
00:19:07So back to the top of the Reds lineup.
00:19:10And ready to hit now for Cincinnati, number nine.
00:19:13In there for strike one.
00:19:28Chases that one upstairs.
00:19:31On the mound, you take a note, you see the hitter's willingness to chase that pitch upstairs.
00:19:36Get deeper in the count and try to climb the ladder.
00:19:41And a swing and a miss, and that's that.
00:19:45Cincinnati plates a pair on this homer.
00:19:48It's now 3-0.
00:19:52Hit.
00:20:02Leading off for the Red Sox, the shortstop, number five.
00:20:08Yeah, the right hitter back to work.
00:20:11And he pumps it a strike.
00:20:14Well, after putting up a nice inning on offense, got some runs across.
00:20:17This is where you look for the starter to go out there, have a shutdown inning.
00:20:20Don't give that other team any hope.
00:20:23You just hope that he can get through this inning, get the bats back up there while they're hot.
00:20:26And that's what he did.
00:20:29And that's what he did.
00:20:32That's what he did.
00:20:35Got the bats back up there while they're hot.
00:20:39Foul off down the right side.
00:20:54Righty to the plate.
00:20:57Stays alive.
00:21:06Next pitch is outside.
00:21:09Clearly didn't come out of his hand the right way.
00:21:12Left that curveball way up.
00:21:28Next pitch just misses.
00:21:31And a count is even.
00:21:34And a count is even, two and two.
00:21:44And he deals.
00:21:47And down on strikes he goes.
00:21:50And that's the first out.
00:21:53Man, it's almost unfair that he can just pull that knuckleball out of his pocket and throw it up there in addition to his other pitches.
00:21:58It's unlike anything else he throws.
00:22:01Because he doesn't throw it all the time, you just don't get a good look at it through outing it back.
00:22:06And now it's the catcher for the Red Sox, number 29.
00:22:11Swing and a bouncer.
00:22:15Perez over to first in time.
00:22:18Already two out here in the home half of inning number two.
00:22:22The right fielder, Jim Rice.
00:22:27So stepping in for Boston, Jim Rice.
00:22:30His righty lefty splits there.
00:22:34Come on, Boston!
00:22:49First pitch doesn't find the zone.
00:22:52One ball, no strike.
00:22:56Kicks and fires.
00:22:59Way high.
00:23:02He really committed to that fastball up at the top of the zone.
00:23:05He knows that if he makes a mistake in the zone, it gets hit hard by a power guy like this.
00:23:09That's a nice miss right there.
00:23:19This one popped up.
00:23:22Foul ground, first base side.
00:23:25Botto makes the catch, and that'll do it.
00:23:28We head on now to the top of the third.
00:23:31It's the Reds three, and the Red Sox nothing.
00:23:36All set for the start of the inning.
00:23:39Now it's the shortstop, Barry Larkin.
00:23:42The shortstop, Barry Larkin.
00:23:45The wind of the pitch.
00:23:48Good eye right there.
00:23:51Mark 1, 2, 3 this time around.
00:23:54Last inning, threw a lot of pitches.
00:24:07Next offering is in for a strike.
00:24:10Well, he looks fresh out there.
00:24:13He needs to get a little more confidence and remember how good he's been in the past.
00:24:22Here comes a pinch.
00:24:25That one is blasted.
00:24:28Left field, towards the monster.
00:24:31It bangs off the wall.
00:24:34Rose to second, tag, and he's in there.
00:24:37He quickly went from hitter to base runner.
00:24:40Love when guys make that transition, and he's got speed to put on a show.
00:24:52Hitter's got some good opposite field power.
00:24:55What I like about something being hit to the right side into the outfield
00:24:58is that the base runner at second has a very good read
00:25:01and can determine whether or not he can score on that base hit.
00:25:08Late swing, fouled off.
00:25:11A little tardy on that fastball.
00:25:14It's going to have to be a little harder for him.
00:25:17Late swing, fouled off.
00:25:20A little tardy on that fastball.
00:25:23He's going to have to get it going a little quicker.
00:25:26Get that front foot down.
00:25:29Runner at second, nobody out.
00:25:32The 1-1 is cut on and missed at a pitch upstairs.
00:25:40Right hitter kicks, deals.
00:25:43Got him swinging.
00:25:46He's going to score after the leadoff double.
00:25:49A strikeout, and there's one away.
00:25:52Just beautiful placement of the splitter right there.
00:25:55Exactly where you want it with two strikes to get that swing and miss.
00:25:58He's worked very hard to be able to command that pitch.
00:26:01It's a tough pitch to get a grip on,
00:26:04but he's one of the best at throwing it where he wants to.
00:26:07Tony Perez, the next to hit for the Reds.
00:26:10This guy has turned into a beast.
00:26:14Kicks and deals.
00:26:17Next offering misses down and away.
00:26:28Next one off the plate, inside.
00:26:31That's ball two.
00:26:35Runner leads away at second.
00:26:38On the ground.
00:26:41Fires to first on the run.
00:26:44And they got him.
00:26:47That's ball three.
00:26:50He's going to get it.
00:26:53He's going to get it.
00:26:56He's going to get it.
00:26:59He's going to get it.
00:27:02And they got him.
00:27:08Now batting, the first baseman,
00:27:11Joey Votto.
00:27:19And here is Joey Votto.
00:27:22Good contact guy, good defender.
00:27:26First pitch, and he just misses.
00:27:29He's been trying to tease the zone with that slider,
00:27:32but these hitters have shown patience,
00:27:35not going outside the strike zone.
00:27:38And a one-oh.
00:27:41That's a bullet, but it goes foul.
00:27:55And the right hitter deals.
00:27:58And a count one and two.
00:28:11And a swing and a line drive at a right field.
00:28:14That's a base hit.
00:28:16Run scores.
00:28:19Well done. Drives in the run.
00:28:22That's a good sound coming off the bat, man.
00:28:24And as he connected out front and ripped it into the outfield,
00:28:27that's one of those swings where you just don't even feel the ball hit the barrel.
00:28:31That's a pure stroke.
00:28:34And stepping in is the speedy Eric Davis.
00:28:38He's over one.
00:28:41And that's in there for strike one.
00:28:43Look how good these offenses are.
00:28:45There's a lot of ballgame left.
00:28:55The pitch.
00:28:58That misses off the outside edge.
00:29:05The pitch.
00:29:08So a foul ball makes it one and two.
00:29:19The pitch.
00:29:22Swing and a miss.
00:29:24The velocity blasted it right past him.
00:29:27So they pick up a run on two hits.
00:29:29No errors and a man left.
00:29:31We move on to the bottom of inning number three.
00:29:34It's the Reds four and the Red Sox nothing.
00:29:41Bottom of the inning, here's a speed threat, number 15.
00:29:45The Red Sox in striking distance but have some work to do.
00:29:49It starts with a laid off man.
00:29:50Need a good at bat out of him right here.
00:29:55And a pitch.
00:29:57And there's a strike.
00:29:58Good heater at 98.
00:30:07At the belt and fires.
00:30:09That one into dirt.
00:30:10And a count even one and one.
00:30:19The pitch.
00:30:21In for a strike.
00:30:22That is strike two.
00:30:30And a pitch.
00:30:33He might have to look for a different put away pitch right here, 2-2.
00:30:36He's already seen the curve ball a couple of times in this at bat.
00:30:39So might have it timed up and ready for it.
00:30:43He swings and drives one out to deep left field.
00:30:46Pulls it in on the warning track.
00:30:49Just pulled off of it a little bit right there.
00:30:52That front shoulder coming open instead of staying closed.
00:30:55If he does that, he's going to be able to go up the middle the other way
00:30:59with some authority instead of a fly out to left.
00:31:02So the lineup flips over.
00:31:05Number 22 up next for the Red Sox.
00:31:09In there and it's 0-1.
00:31:18The pitch.
00:31:20He swings and fouls one off.
00:31:24The pitch.
00:31:26He swings and fouls one off.
00:31:41Liner snagged it first.
00:31:46Now battle.
00:31:47The third baseman.
00:31:49Wade.
00:31:51Wade Boggs.
00:31:55At the plate.
00:31:56Wade Boggs struck out looking at his first at bat.
00:32:00He's got pop, which is a little sneaky because he's so comfortable
00:32:05with taking his base hits to the opposite field.
00:32:08But he can jump you if you make a mistake.
00:32:12In there for strike one.
00:32:22That one is upstairs.
00:32:33Left hand batter waits.
00:32:36Fouled off to the right.
00:32:51Two outs.
00:32:53Fouled off left side.
00:33:05Righty delivers.
00:33:08Now a high fly ball out to left center.
00:33:11Foster makes the catch and that'll do it.
00:33:15Red Sox go down quietly.
00:33:17They trail it here for nothing.
00:33:21Back here at Fenway.
00:33:28Now the left fielder, George Foster.
00:33:31The left fielder.
00:33:33So, Boog, you went to college in this town.
00:33:35What was it like for you being a college student and having the opportunity
00:33:38to bounce over here to Fenway Park and see some games?
00:33:41Yeah, in fact, 1990, a couple of college classmates and I,
00:33:44we were in college.
00:33:46We bought standing room tickets.
00:33:48And then the next night got a chance to see the Red Sox clinch the east
00:33:52against the White Sox in that sliding catch in the corner by Tom Brudansky.
00:33:57The Red Sox would end up losing to the Oakland A's in the playoffs.
00:34:01But that's one of the things that I'll think about in terms of memories
00:34:05from going to college and going to Fenway.
00:34:07Hauls it in for the out.
00:34:10The right fielder, number 14, Pete Rhodes.
00:34:16Pete Rhodes, the next to hit.
00:34:30First pitch, just misses.
00:34:39And there's the ball.
00:34:41That pitch not even close.
00:34:42A 2-0 count now.
00:34:43He can't be over-aggressive.
00:34:45He's got to make sure that pitch is right on a tee for him.
00:34:52Next offering upstairs.
00:35:06That just missed.
00:35:07He walked him on four pitches.
00:35:09That just came apart right there, a four-pitch walk.
00:35:13Guy at the plate was not going to help him out by swinging at something
00:35:15out of the zone.
00:35:17Joe Morgan, the next to hit for the Reds.
00:35:29First pitch, not close.
00:35:31Good speed on the base pass.
00:35:33He handles the bat very well.
00:35:35I wouldn't be surprised if the skipper puts on some type of hit and run
00:35:39or run and hit.
00:35:45Left-hand hitter waits.
00:35:47There's a strike.
00:35:48Boston's bullpen with some activity.
00:35:50Carl Mays up and loosening in the pen.
00:35:54Lester, the power lefty, up as well.
00:36:02Here's a 1-1.
00:36:04That's Baltimore.
00:36:072-1.
00:36:19Slapped foul.
00:36:22Sometimes at Fenway, you just got to think about trying to hit it to the back
00:36:24of the bullpen, right?
00:36:25Right.
00:36:26Drive it over the bullpen.
00:36:28I mean, if you've got pop, put on a show.
00:36:32Next pitch inside.
00:36:33Full count, 3 and 2.
00:36:43Kicks and fires.
00:36:45That one ripped.
00:36:47And a base hit.
00:36:49They get it in quickly.
00:36:51So, first and second now, one out.
00:36:53Sheesh.
00:36:54Singy, that was a laser shot.
00:36:56And a good thing we have stack cast to give us the details.
00:36:59Yeah, get out of the way on that one.
00:37:01That ball flew out of the box at 112 miles per hour.
00:37:05You talk about generating a ton of power in that swing.
00:37:08He did it with quick hands, good lower half, and just unloaded on that ball.
00:37:13And now, number nine.
00:37:15That one the other way.
00:37:17Off balance feed.
00:37:18There's one.
00:37:22Tough play right there.
00:37:23Didn't really have enough time to set his feed and make a strong,
00:37:26accurate throw.
00:37:27Had to rush it.
00:37:28But he got it off, and he got it there in time to get that out at second base.
00:37:32Now, the number two hitter, Barry Larkin.
00:37:39Next pitch has popped up.
00:37:41Number 15 under it.
00:37:44Puts the squeeze on that one, and that'll end the inning.
00:37:47Red strand a couple, but they lead it 4-0.
00:37:56Ready to go.
00:37:57Bottom four.
00:37:58And now the D.H., Ted Williams.
00:38:01For the Red Sox, the designated hitter, Ted Williams.
00:38:07And here it comes.
00:38:09Got it started a little too early, strike one.
00:38:19And he deals.
00:38:22And that one fouled off.
00:38:33Here comes a pinch.
00:38:36Lined, and that's a base hit.
00:38:39Now he turns and heads for second.
00:38:42The throw in, not going to get him.
00:38:44He's in there.
00:38:46Wasting no time.
00:38:47He's two for two now on the night.
00:38:50And just a triple and home run away from the cycle.
00:38:53Seriously, we're starting with this already.
00:39:02David Ortiz up next for the Red Sox.
00:39:05Worked a walk in his first trip to the plate.
00:39:10And that's in there for strike one.
00:39:27And a pitch.
00:39:29That one missed.
00:39:39And it's second.
00:39:42Swing and a ball lifted in the air.
00:39:44Left field pretty well struck.
00:39:46And that one is off the wall.
00:39:48The run comes in to score from second.
00:39:50It's 4-1.
00:39:52These guys today are so great with handling velocity.
00:39:54They're seeing high speeds day after day.
00:39:57And a nice job of turning that one around.
00:40:09Number eight up next for the Red Sox.
00:40:13Now that is number eight.
00:40:19And the first pitch misses for ball one.
00:40:38Inside corner.
00:40:39And that's called a strike.
00:40:48A 1-1.
00:40:51Oh, now this one gets away at the plate.
00:40:53Runner holds.
00:40:54Count goes to 2-1.
00:41:00And a pitch.
00:41:02And another ball.
00:41:183-1 now.
00:41:20And ball four to a board.
00:41:23Pretty easy walk right there.
00:41:24Last pitch wasn't even much to think about.
00:41:28Now here is number five.
00:41:41First pitch.
00:41:42And that's in for a strike.
00:41:44He's looking for a strikeout or a ball on the ground for a double play
00:41:47He's trying to sort of calm this situation down.
00:42:01Comes up empty on the swing.
00:42:03Going two now.
00:42:04That was straight queso right there.
00:42:22Righty to the plate.
00:42:24Going to count one and two.
00:42:25I don't like to say he wasted a pitch.
00:42:27I think that was a purpose pitch.
00:42:28Change the eye level.
00:42:29Have him look up.
00:42:30Now go back exactly where you want to go.
00:42:34Next offering way off the plate.
00:42:37First and second here.
00:42:38No outs.
00:42:45Next pitch is in the dirt.
00:42:48And the count is filled up.
00:43:02And fouled off.
00:43:18Lifted in the air right center field.
00:43:21Dives.
00:43:22What a play.
00:43:24Runner tagging for third.
00:43:25He's in there.
00:43:30A great diving catch.
00:43:32And that was only possible because of the route he took to get there.
00:43:35Right, Chris?
00:43:36Yeah.
00:43:37Statcast shows us just how efficient that route to the ball was.
00:43:40In fact, that's about as good as it gets.
00:43:43Pretty much a direct line to it.
00:43:45And perhaps he was a wide receiver in a different life.
00:43:48I don't know.
00:43:49But, man, great job to hold on all the way through the dive as well.
00:43:52No fumble caused by the ground.
00:43:54Number 29 swings through that one.
00:43:58As he comes to the plate for the second time today.
00:44:10Here's your one.
00:44:12Swings and misses at the pitch off the plate.
00:44:15Big pitch right here.
00:44:16He's going to try to make a pitch that's going to produce a strikeout
00:44:18or a ground ball double play.
00:44:23Runners are at the corners.
00:44:24One away.
00:44:31Next one just misses.
00:44:33And a count one and two.
00:44:40And the righty deals.
00:44:43And he grounds one back up the middle.
00:44:45Has some trouble with it.
00:44:46To first.
00:44:47And he beats it.
00:44:48Everyone's safe.
00:44:53That pretty much split the zone down the middle.
00:44:55And those are the ones where you've got to make them pay.
00:44:57And you can feel this crowd waking up a bit here
00:45:00as the guys are starting to make some noise with their bats.
00:45:08First and second.
00:45:10One out.
00:45:11And now the right fielder, Jim Rice, popped out and fouled ground first time through.
00:45:16On the ground could be two.
00:45:18Larkin to second.
00:45:21And they turn it.
00:45:22On to the top of the fifth we go.
00:45:24It's the Reds four and the Red Sox two.
00:45:38Back here in Boston.
00:45:39Top five, John Jamby with Chris Singleton.
00:45:42And leading it off, Johnny Bench.
00:45:45Johnny Bench.
00:45:58A wide kick to pitch.
00:46:01Ball one.
00:46:02No strikes.
00:46:03Johnny Bench did a lot in his career to change the catching position.
00:46:07This guy popularized the one-handed catching stance,
00:46:10which not a lot of guys were using at the time.
00:46:13And the next pitch misses.
00:46:14And the count is 2-0.
00:46:17Kicks and deals.
00:46:20And that's downstairs and outside.
00:46:22Bench used that unique stance and he had amazing hands and tangled gloves to prove it.
00:46:33And a four-pitch walk.
00:46:37That could be a tone setter for the inning.
00:46:39Four straight pitches and the leadoff batter is on base.
00:46:41We'll see if the next guy waits until there's a called strike before he takes the bat off his shoulder.
00:46:46Tony Perez.
00:46:47Now at the plate.
00:46:48He's 0-1.
00:46:55First offering misses badly for ball one.
00:46:59The pitch.
00:47:01Check swing, but it went too far.
00:47:04And the count even at one.
00:47:12The pitch.
00:47:14That's a strike.
00:47:15And the count 1-2.
00:47:18And the count is 2-0.
00:47:22The pitch.
00:47:24That's a strike.
00:47:26And the count 1-2.
00:47:39And a pitch.
00:47:41Next offering misses down and away.
00:47:45Runner at first with no outs here.
00:47:51And a swing and a miss.
00:47:53One away.
00:47:55It gets talked about a lot, but a good high fastball in a two-strike situation, it's just become such a problem for hitters in more recent years.
00:48:03With all of the emphasis by pitchers on developing that spin rate, having a good grip on the baseball, and having a good swing.
00:48:11Developing that spin rate, having a good grip on the baseball.
00:48:14Those high fastballs, they kind of look like to the hitter that they're rising.
00:48:18Even though they're not, but they're not decreasing in velocity and spin rate.
00:48:22So very difficult to get the barrel on it.
00:48:25Next to hit, Joey Votto.
00:48:28Right hander kicks, deals.
00:48:30And that one is lifted in the air.
00:48:33Rice makes the catch.
00:48:35Two away down.
00:48:37Lefties can definitely be a little pull happy up there.
00:48:40Especially with pitches that they see pretty well.
00:48:42That was a good example.
00:48:44He hooked an outside pitch.
00:48:46Hit that ball in the air.
00:48:48That was a good example.
00:48:51Now it's the Reds' D.H.
00:48:53Eric Davis.
00:48:55He's a guy who does it all.
00:49:03First offering, and it just misses.
00:49:06And that skips in the dirt.
00:49:152-0.
00:49:17On the corner for a strike.
00:49:19And that was a good example.
00:49:21Now it's the Reds' D.H.
00:49:23Eric Davis.
00:49:25He's a guy who does it all.
00:49:27And that was a good example.
00:49:29Now it's the Reds' D.H.
00:49:31Eric Davis.
00:49:33On the corner for a strike.
00:49:45You can't really adjust your game plan for that last pitch.
00:49:47Guy hasn't thrown it very much.
00:49:49You got to focus on the stuff that he's throwing up there most of the time.
00:49:542-2 now.
00:49:56Inside, just missed.
00:49:58Great RBI spot here.
00:50:00Just got to stay focused on the pitch.
00:50:02And the motion, so something in the gap should definitely score it.
00:50:08Two outs.
00:50:10And down on strikes.
00:50:12And that will end the inning.
00:50:14Reds leave one, as they can't add to their 4-2 lead.
00:50:32And we're back here at Fenway Park.
00:50:34Now it's the second baseman, number 15.
00:50:38It's good speed at the top of the order here.
00:50:40You want to get it on.
00:50:42See if you can get a stolen base.
00:50:44Maybe get around the bases and pick up a run.
00:50:46And the right-hander back to work.
00:50:48Just missed.
00:50:50The 1-0.
00:50:52Bounce to third.
00:50:54Throw over to Votto.
00:50:56And the leadoff hitter retired in the fifth.
00:50:58He's doing a nice job of keeping the ball out of the air.
00:51:00Let's the defense work behind him with another ground ball.
00:51:02Good execution.
00:51:04Now here's the Red Sox leadoff hitter.
00:51:06Number 20, number 21, number 22, number 23.
00:51:08And he's got it.
00:51:10He's got it.
00:51:12He's got it.
00:51:14He's got it.
00:51:16He's got it.
00:51:18Here's the Red Sox leadoff hitter.
00:51:20Number 22.
00:51:22Well, on the mound, very efficient.
00:51:24Able to produce an outcome.
00:51:26It seems like within the third or fourth pitch
00:51:28of just about every at-bat.
00:51:32In there, and it's 0-1.
00:51:42One down, base is empty.
00:51:44Foul ball there.
00:51:48At the belt and fires.
00:51:50Pop up here.
00:51:52Third base side.
00:51:54He's got it.
00:51:56And there's two away.
00:51:58Going to have to have a little more discipline
00:52:00in future at-bats.
00:52:02That pitch looked good, but you can't hit it.
00:52:04It was just too high in the zone.
00:52:06You usually see a swing and miss
00:52:08or weak contact in the infield.
00:52:10Two outs.
00:52:12Base is empty.
00:52:14He's got it.
00:52:16Two outs.
00:52:18Base is empty.
00:52:20And stepping in for Boston, Wade Boggs.
00:52:28That hits the dirt.
00:52:30Ball one.
00:52:32You want to be patient here.
00:52:34Try to work a walk if you can.
00:52:36You've got a big power bat behind you
00:52:38in the on-deck circle, and with two outs,
00:52:40one swing can put you right back in this ballgame.
00:52:42The pitch.
00:52:44One off the mark. Now 2-0.
00:52:46Well, he's so great about hitting the ball
00:52:48the other way. He gets those arms extended.
00:52:50So right there, just trying to
00:52:52straighten him up a little bit so he doesn't
00:52:54have as much outside plate coverage.
00:53:08There's a strike. 3-1.
00:53:14And that's ball four.
00:53:18His ability to draw walks
00:53:20has been something
00:53:22that's been part of his career
00:53:24since day one.
00:53:26Here now, the Red Sox DH,
00:53:28Ted Williams.
00:53:44First pitch,
00:53:46and he just misses.
00:53:56And downstairs.
00:53:58To account to a guy like this
00:54:00at the plate, you've got to throw a pitcher's pitch.
00:54:02Don't just try to get a strike.
00:54:04It could make you pay.
00:54:142-0.
00:54:16And a foul ball.
00:54:45Ripped on a line to center.
00:54:48Makes the catch.
00:54:50That is the inning.
00:54:52One left for the Red Sox.
00:54:54They trail it here. 4-2.
00:55:03We're back, and they make a change
00:55:05to start the sixth.
00:55:07The new pitcher, Carl Mays.
00:55:09It's his job to keep his team in the game.
00:55:11About this point in the ballgame,
00:55:13we're talking about middle innings,
00:55:15and the little length out of this arm
00:55:17coming out of the bullpen,
00:55:19we'll see just how many outs he's able
00:55:21to give his skipper.
00:55:26A line to the pitch.
00:55:31Popped in the air.
00:55:33Left field. Racing.
00:55:35Makes the catch.
00:55:37And there's one down.
00:55:39Good pitch. He just kind of had him out in front
00:55:41and wasn't able to stay close.
00:55:43Digging in is the switch hitting outfielder,
00:55:45Pete Rose.
00:55:47This guy, one of the best contact men
00:55:49in the sport as well.
00:55:51Outstanding on the defensive end.
00:55:55And that one in the air,
00:55:57center field.
00:55:59Brings it in. Out.
00:56:01Number two.
00:56:07Now batting, the second baseman,
00:56:09Joe Morgan.
00:56:13Digging in,
00:56:15Joe Morgan.
00:56:17And he's already left his mark on this game.
00:56:19He certainly has, Boone.
00:56:21Two run shot in the second inning,
00:56:23and that made an early impact on this game
00:56:25in a big way.
00:56:35And first off,
00:56:37the batting is fouled off.
00:56:45The line to the pitch.
00:56:49Misses outside,
00:56:51and the count is one and one.
00:56:53Action in the pen down there.
00:56:55A right hander is up and throwing.
00:56:57The one on one.
00:57:01And that one
00:57:03wrapped foul.
00:57:11Right-handed reliever.
00:57:15Swing and a miss.
00:57:17Struck him out.
00:57:19And good work there
00:57:21as he gets a one, two, three.
00:57:23To the bottom of the six we go.
00:57:25Four, five, six, coming up.
00:57:27It's the Reds four
00:57:29and the Red Sox two.
00:57:33Back here at Fenway Park,
00:57:35bottom of the six.
00:57:37And the batter now, David Ortiz.
00:57:39He's not going to get cheated up there.
00:57:41No, he's not.
00:57:43He's looking to do damage
00:57:45with every swing he takes.
00:57:47The pitch.
00:57:49And that's a strike.
00:57:51Well, I say it's the best pitch in baseball.
00:57:53Strike one.
00:57:55You get ahead on a good hitter as well.
00:57:57Gives you a little bit more confidence
00:57:59to move to the at bat.
00:58:17That one hammered center field.
00:58:19Back there.
00:58:21Pulls it in on the warning track.
00:58:29Now batting, number eight.
00:58:33Stepping in, number eight.
00:58:47And first offering is fouled off.
00:58:59Left hand batter waits.
00:59:01And now the count is even.
00:59:03Talk about the right guy at the right spot.
00:59:05They really need a rally.
00:59:07And this guy is someone you can believe in
00:59:09to find a way to get on base.
00:59:13And the pitch.
00:59:15In the dirt.
00:59:17And a count two and one.
00:59:27And the right hitter deals.
00:59:29Swings and misses.
00:59:31And the count is two and two.
00:59:39Left hand hitter waits.
00:59:41And that one hammered center field.
00:59:43And that one hammered.
00:59:45That's back there.
00:59:49Up against the wall.
00:59:51And makes the catch.
00:59:53Now batting.
00:59:55Number five.
00:59:59Two outs. Base is empty.
01:00:01Number five. Up next for the Red Sox.
01:00:03In the air.
01:00:05Foul off first.
01:00:07Votto under it.
01:00:09He's got it.
01:00:11And that is out number three.
01:00:13Down in order.
01:00:15Go the Red Sox.
01:00:17Still down by a count of four to two.
01:00:33Back now at Fenway.
01:00:35And now the center fielder.
01:00:37Number nine.
01:00:41The wind of the pitch.
01:00:45Strike one.
01:00:57Up the middle.
01:00:59Close play against the speedy runner.
01:01:01Showed us right there
01:01:03why he's considered one of the best
01:01:05middle infielders in the sport.
01:01:07That's always a tough play going up the middle
01:01:09on the backhand.
01:01:11But what really made this play happen
01:01:13was that quick release.
01:01:15Smooth exchange.
01:01:17And that was as smooth as it gets.
01:01:19And it had to be with the wheels going down the line.
01:01:21And now Barry Larkin.
01:01:23And first offering is fouled off.
01:01:31Strike one.
01:01:41Good eye on that spot.
01:01:53To third. Boggs.
01:01:55Over to pick it up.
01:01:57And to away to start the seven.
01:02:01Number five.
01:02:03Johnny Bench.
01:02:07Here's the catcher.
01:02:09Johnny Bench.
01:02:11He had a big swing for these guys way back to the first inning.
01:02:13Yeah, but he didn't waste any time in this one.
01:02:15The solo shot really got his team going.
01:02:17And he's looking for more right here.
01:02:19So high down.
01:02:29First offering. Misses the mark.
01:02:35The pitch.
01:02:39Good eye right there.
01:02:41You get to this part of the order.
01:02:43Yeah, there's some pop there, but more likely
01:02:45there's some base hits.
01:02:47So very important to be patient.
01:02:49Let the pitcher walk you, if he will.
01:02:53The 2-0 is in for a strike.
01:02:59And he deals.
01:03:05Popped up left side.
01:03:07Number five. Drifts towards it.
01:03:09Makes the grab. And that's the inning.
01:03:11Midway in inning number seven.
01:03:13And it's time to stretch.
01:03:15It's the Reds four.
01:03:17And the Red Sox two.
01:03:21Set for the last half of the seventh.
01:03:23And now it's the catcher for the Red Sox.
01:03:25Number 29.
01:03:27The catcher.
01:03:29Number 29.
01:03:35And the pitch.
01:03:37And that one fouled off.
01:03:45Next offering upstairs.
01:03:47Activity in the bullpen for the Reds.
01:03:49Danny Graves.
01:03:51Getting ready to go.
01:03:53Carroll.
01:03:55Getting loose as well.
01:04:07The 1-1 is cut on and missed.
01:04:09The pitch.
01:04:11Upstairs.
01:04:13And here it comes.
01:04:15And a swing and a miss.
01:04:17So he's gotten deep into this game.
01:04:19And at least so far.
01:04:21Not showing a ton of signs of fatigue.
01:04:23Number 14.
01:04:25Number 14.
01:04:27Number 14.
01:04:29Number 14.
01:04:31Number 14.
01:04:33Number 14.
01:04:35Number 14.
01:04:37Number 14.
01:04:39Number 14.
01:04:41Not showing a ton of signs of fatigue.
01:04:43Number 14.
01:04:45Jim Rice.
01:04:53Jim Rice.
01:04:55Up next for the Red Sox.
01:05:03In there for strike one.
01:05:05I really like how he's been attacking hitters
01:05:07early in at-bats.
01:05:09Strikes on the first pitch to over 70%
01:05:11of the guys he's faced in this one.
01:05:19And the righty deals.
01:05:21Had a good eye there.
01:05:33Swing and a miss.
01:05:35As he was out front that time.
01:05:39Strike one.
01:05:57The one-two.
01:05:59Swings and misses.
01:06:01Back-to-back strikeouts.
01:06:03Got him out on the front foot.
01:06:05Couldn't keep the hands back long enough.
01:06:07Played right into
01:06:09the hands of the pitcher.
01:06:19So up next, number 15.
01:06:27And that's in there for strike one.
01:06:37And a pitch.
01:06:39And it's one and one.
01:06:49Two down.
01:06:51Nobody on.
01:06:53And there's a ball.
01:07:07Look out.
01:07:09Just one out away from seven strong innings.
01:07:11And just at 100 pitches.
01:07:13Man, pretty impressive.
01:07:15They've got to be happy
01:07:17with what they've gotten from him out there today.
01:07:27Fouls one away.
01:07:29And now three and two.
01:07:31Flew open a little bit with that front shoulder.
01:07:33But was able to slow his back down
01:07:35just enough to make contact with that pitch.
01:07:37Keep the bat alive.
01:07:41Next offering is fouled back.
01:07:55Fouled off again.
01:07:57And it remains three and two.
01:08:05And he walked him.
01:08:09Well, he's normally going to fill up the strike zone
01:08:11and really limit base runners.
01:08:13But his command in this one just
01:08:15seems off out there.
01:08:17A lot more walks than he's used to giving up.
01:08:19So the Red Sox lineup
01:08:21turns over.
01:08:23Number 22 up next for the Red Sox.
01:08:25So the Red Sox lineup
01:08:27turns over. Number 22
01:08:29up next for the Red Sox.
01:08:35First pitch.
01:08:37Just misses.
01:08:39The two-out walk. Gotta erase that and really go to work
01:08:41on the hitter. You gotta go ahead
01:08:43and just let him steal if he's going to.
01:08:45Try to create the swing and miss and get out of this jam.
01:08:47And the next pitch is way
01:08:49outside. And you wonder,
01:08:51is he in his head a little bit?
01:08:53If the base runner doesn't steal right here,
01:08:55what's great is that he is dividing the attention
01:08:57of the pitcher and may serve
01:08:59to give his teammate a better pitch
01:09:01to hit at the plate.
01:09:15Strike two.
01:09:23The tying run at the plate.
01:09:25Swings and pulls a foul
01:09:27to the right side.
01:09:39Kicks and fires.
01:09:41To the right side.
01:09:43And it gets by him.
01:09:45Throw stops the lead runner
01:09:47at second.
01:09:49And the Red Sox lead
01:09:51throw stops the lead runner at second.
01:09:53Two on and two out.
01:09:55Well, that may end up being an at-bat
01:09:57we go back to later on when this game
01:09:59is over. Just one of those seen
01:10:01high-base hits through the infield. He just kind of
01:10:03rolled over on it a little bit, but sometimes
01:10:05those can find a hole and get you enough.
01:10:07Now a huge at-bat in this game coming up.
01:10:09Now the Reds manager is out
01:10:11of the dugout and will make a move to the pen.
01:10:13Number 34, out of the game.
01:10:15Two-run ball game as he heads
01:10:17for the dugout. And we'll be back with a new pitcher.
01:10:21Johnny Cueto
01:10:27gets the ball now. On for his
01:10:2920th appearance of the year.
01:10:41Now the third baseman,
01:10:43Wade Boggs.
01:10:45First pitch doesn't find the zone.
01:10:51Back when you played,
01:10:53it wasn't the empirical data we have now.
01:10:55It was a guy with a ruler
01:10:57and a diamond taking a colored pencil
01:10:59and drawing a line where he thought someone
01:11:01had hit the ball, right?
01:11:03That or just going off of gut
01:11:05or feel. What does it look like his swing
01:11:07is today? What's the pitcher throwing?
01:11:09They are sticking to
01:11:11the metrics and what seems to be most
01:11:13consistent for that hitter regardless
01:11:15of who the pitcher is on the mound.
01:11:191-1 now.
01:11:21On the ground, Votto.
01:11:23He takes it himself
01:11:25to the bag and that'll do it.
01:11:27Boston
01:11:29strands a pair. They trail it here.
01:11:314-2.
01:11:33Right now, right down, right your feelings out.
01:11:35I'm on a strong now, put my words
01:11:37to sound. Find out why my people
01:11:39are crying out. Reach out with it.
01:11:41Welcome back.
01:11:43We're at the top of the eighth. Here's the third baseman,
01:11:45Tony Perez.
01:11:47The third baseman, number 24,
01:11:49Tony
01:11:51Perez.
01:11:57Mays
01:11:59back to work.
01:12:01Just
01:12:03missed. The Red Sox
01:12:05with some bullpen action. A left
01:12:07hander appears to be getting ready.
01:12:19Next
01:12:21offering is in for a strike.
01:12:31Good eye right there.
01:12:47That one in for a strike.
01:12:492-2.
01:12:53Righty to the plate.
01:12:57And it's filled up.
01:13:01Righty delivers.
01:13:17The 3-2
01:13:19is off the outside edge
01:13:21and that is ball four.
01:13:23He earned his trip to first right there.
01:13:25It's not easy laying off pitches that
01:13:27just missed the zone like that.
01:13:29And it's a real discipline as well.
01:13:31He's put a lot of work into that aspect
01:13:33of his game and it paid off right there.
01:13:55Votto. The next to hit
01:13:57takes ball one.
01:13:59Nobody out. Runner at first.
01:14:05Next pitch misses inside
01:14:07and that's ball two.
01:14:13At the belt and
01:14:15fires.
01:14:17In the air, out towards
01:14:19left center. Great effort
01:14:21as he's able to haul it in
01:14:23and there's one down.
01:14:27Now batting, designated hitter
01:14:29Eric
01:14:31Davis.
01:14:37And now the designated hitter
01:14:39for the Reds, Eric Davis.
01:14:41Well, he's always a threat.
01:14:43Even if this guy is 0-3
01:14:45for the night with three strikeouts,
01:14:47he can come up that fourth time and do
01:14:49damage because he's that good.
01:14:53The other way and there's
01:14:55a base hit.
01:14:57Quick throw back in.
01:14:59Lead runner holds it second with one
01:15:01gone. Well, that's one of those knocks
01:15:03where you almost expect to get some jabs
01:15:05from your teammates when you get back to the dugout.
01:15:07Totally tied up with that inside
01:15:09pitch. Got to it late and deep
01:15:11in the zone, but he got the bat
01:15:13on plane enough to fight it off the other way.
01:15:15Now at the plate,
01:15:17George Foster.
01:15:19And the infield
01:15:21fly rule call.
01:15:25Now batting,
01:15:27right fielder
01:15:29Pete
01:15:31Rose.
01:15:33So first
01:15:35and second with two outs.
01:15:37And now Pete
01:15:39Rose. Well, both
01:15:41sides equally as strong,
01:15:43so not a good time to try
01:15:45to turn him around with a
01:15:47relief pitcher and put him on the other side
01:15:49of the plate.
01:15:51Looking for some insurance
01:15:53insurance. Or as our
01:15:55friends down in the south would say,
01:15:57insurance. No matter how you say
01:15:59it, we know what you mean.
01:16:01Well, this is a critical spot
01:16:03for both the pitcher and the hitter.
01:16:05You can learn a lot about a guy by how
01:16:07he handles these pressure situations.
01:16:09Two outs.
01:16:11Couple of base runners at first
01:16:13and second.
01:16:17And a foul ball.
01:16:23Next offering
01:16:25misses.
01:16:27Two and one. Tough spot
01:16:29right here. Couple of runners on.
01:16:31Two ball count.
01:16:33You can't nibble, but you have
01:16:35to execute and finish your pitch.
01:16:37If you leave something out over the plate,
01:16:39it's going to bring in some runs.
01:16:43Can't get there.
01:16:45And now maybe extra bases.
01:16:49Runner around third
01:16:51runner around third
01:16:53into score. Another
01:16:55comes into score. It's
01:16:576-2. And he's got a
01:16:59two-run triple. Gets the job
01:17:01done as he brings home a pair. He really
01:17:03smoked this one down the line, barreled it
01:17:05up out front, and once it dropped
01:17:07in fair, this guy was off to the races.
01:17:09It looked like he was thinking three
01:17:11right out of the batter's box.
01:17:17John Lester
01:17:19takes over on the mound, and he'll
01:17:21be dealing with a runner on third.
01:17:35Runner at third.
01:17:37Two gone. Here's the second baseman,
01:17:39Joe Morgan.
01:17:43And first offering
01:17:45is fouled off.
01:17:49...
01:17:51...
01:17:53...
01:17:55...
01:17:57...
01:17:59...
01:18:01Kicks and deals.
01:18:03Hard hit left side.
01:18:05That's a base hit. Run scores.
01:18:07...
01:18:09...
01:18:11Picks himself up an RBI. I really
01:18:13like that swing, man. He didn't just push
01:18:15it the other way through the infield.
01:18:17He drove it that way, and it kind of
01:18:19makes me think he was thinking opposite
01:18:21field as he stepped into the box.
01:18:23Got a pitch he liked, and he got it done.
01:18:25Next for Cincinnati, number
01:18:27nine.
01:18:35And the first pitch misses for ball
01:18:37one.
01:18:47...
01:18:49...
01:18:51Two outs. Morgan on the
01:18:53move. Pitch is low.
01:18:55Throw there.
01:18:57Safe! Chris, his wheels were the
01:18:59difference maker on that play. Just
01:19:01got in there. Yeah, with
01:19:03StatKast's help, we see his top speed
01:19:05on this stolen base, and that's
01:19:07a big number. I mean, man,
01:19:09he really made his athleticism work for
01:19:11him on that one.
01:19:13Next pitch
01:19:15is outside.
01:19:31Good plate appearance there.
01:19:33Able to take the walk. Definitely
01:19:35lost the handle during that sequence.
01:19:37Four pitches for the walk, and that
01:19:39last one didn't even threaten the zone.
01:19:41Ketcher might want to go talk to him.
01:19:43First and second, two down.
01:19:45Here's the shortstop at the
01:19:47plate. Barry Larkin.
01:19:53In there, and it's
01:19:550-1. Not the easiest thing
01:19:57when you're talking about a guy that's,
01:19:59you know, perhaps is going to be in the rotation.
01:20:01You know, maybe a long relief guy
01:20:03to not start an inning, to come
01:20:05into an inning with pressure on it and
01:20:07try to get yourself comfortable.
01:20:14The next offering
01:20:16misses. 2-1.
01:20:18It's a big opportunity right here, but I
01:20:20love the way he's slowing the game down.
01:20:22He's shrinking his zone, making sure
01:20:24he gets the pitch that he wants to hit.
01:20:27And now the lefty
01:20:29just missed.
01:20:44Foul's
01:20:46one away, and now 3-2.
01:20:57The pitch.
01:20:59Got him. Good job
01:21:01at damage control right there.
01:21:04Last half of the eighth
01:21:06coming up. It's the Reds 7
01:21:08and the Red Sox 2.
01:21:14Special
01:21:18Ready for the bottom of the eighth.
01:21:20Now here's the Red Sox D.H.
01:21:22Ted Williams.
01:21:30The line to kick the pitch.
01:21:33And that one just misses
01:21:35a ball and no strikes.
01:21:38Ripped to third and caught.
01:21:43Now batting, first baseman
01:21:46David
01:21:48Ortiz.
01:21:51David Ortiz
01:21:53up next for the Red Sox.
01:22:08Fought off foul.
01:22:20On the ground to first.
01:22:24A flip to the pitcher covering.
01:22:26And a couple of quick outs.
01:22:29Now batting.
01:22:31Number eight.
01:22:35Two outs. Base is empty.
01:22:37And next for the Red Sox, number
01:22:39eight.
01:22:46First offering
01:22:48misses the mark.
01:22:52And a pitch.
01:22:55Nope.
01:22:57Two and 0.
01:23:04Bottom of the zone and a called
01:23:06strike.
01:23:16A wind in the pitch.
01:23:19Swing and a miss as he was late.
01:23:25And he
01:23:27chases that one.
01:23:29Third out.
01:23:31I think the key is arm action on the changeup.
01:23:33When you can sell it like a fastball
01:23:35you drop the velocity, you get the swing
01:23:37and miss and you walk off the field.
01:23:50Back here at Fenway, we go to the
01:23:52ninth. Here's the Reds catcher, Johnny
01:23:54Bench.
01:23:58The pitch.
01:24:010 and 1.
01:24:03Meanwhile, activity in the bullpen.
01:24:05Bob Stanley up and throwing.
01:24:15The pitch.
01:24:17Swing and a miss.
01:24:48And now 2 and 2.
01:24:54Here's a 2-2.
01:24:58And a foul ball. He stays alive.
01:25:08A 2-2.
01:25:11Stays alive.
01:25:17And a foul ball.
01:25:27Next one misses.
01:25:29And now 3 and 2.
01:25:38Here comes a pitch.
01:25:42And that one hit to first.
01:25:44And that's just foul.
01:25:48The pitch.
01:25:51And that one handled.
01:25:54The throw to first.
01:25:56Now one gone in the ninth.
01:26:04Tony Perez.
01:26:06The next to hit for the Reds.
01:26:18First offering
01:26:20and it just misses.
01:26:28And another ball.
01:26:37A 2-0 is in
01:26:39for a strike.
01:26:44The wind of the pitch.
01:26:48In the left center
01:26:50for a base hit.
01:26:52So they get a man aboard
01:26:54with a one out single.
01:26:56Seems like he got exactly
01:26:58what he was looking for right there.
01:27:00A lot of hitters tell themselves
01:27:02line drive over the infielder's head.
01:27:04That's what I'm trying to do. Just keep that approach simple.
01:27:06And right there it was perfectly executed.
01:27:08On time with everything.
01:27:10And pulled it into the gap nicely.
01:27:12Now it's going to be
01:27:14Joey Votto.
01:27:16Popped up. Foul territory
01:27:18behind the plate.
01:27:20And Votto is retired.
01:27:22And there's two away.
01:27:24Boy, that was a hanging breaking ball right there.
01:27:26I think he tried to do a little bit too much.
01:27:28Sometimes those eyes can get really big.
01:27:30I think his swing broke down as well.
01:27:32And that's what caused him to pop it up.
01:27:34And next is the designated
01:27:36hitter, Eric Davis.
01:27:38Really good piece of hitting last time.
01:27:40Going to the opposite field.
01:27:46Pitch misses inside.
01:27:48And it's 1-0.
01:27:58And a foul ball left side.
01:28:16The lefty ready. And a 1-1.
01:28:18Hard grounder into the
01:28:20outfield for a knock.
01:28:22Throw in
01:28:24holds the lead runner at second.
01:28:26Two on now with two away.
01:28:28Love how he let that ball travel.
01:28:30Trusted his hands.
01:28:32Nice job of going the other way.
01:28:36So two on with two away.
01:28:38In now for the Reds,
01:28:40George Foster.
01:28:42A guy who makes an impact not just at the plate
01:28:44but also in the field.
01:28:46To the left side but it is well fouled.
01:29:02He'll want.
01:29:04In the air left field.
01:29:06Number eight settles under this one.
01:29:10Pulls it down and he makes the catch.
01:29:12And that is that.
01:29:146-7-8 scheduled to start
01:29:16the bottom of the ninth.
01:29:18It's the Reds seven and the Red Sox
01:29:20two.
01:29:30Back in Boston. All set for the bottom
01:29:32of the ninth. Joe stepping in for
01:29:34Boston. Number five.
01:29:38The right hander back to work.
01:29:40And ball
01:29:42one. The Cincinnati bullpen
01:29:44has some movement. Number six
01:29:46appears to be getting loose.
01:29:58Next pitch
01:30:00misses. Two balls no strikes.
01:30:02And delivers
01:30:04outside.
01:30:183-0 down.
01:30:24In this situation you expect the
01:30:26batters to be a little more patient.
01:30:28Possibly take until they get a strike.
01:30:30With that you don't want to miss your
01:30:32opportunity to get ahead early in the count.
01:30:34He didn't right there.
01:30:36Fouled off. He was late.
01:30:46Right hander kicks deals.
01:30:48Out to short.
01:30:50Into the outfield.
01:30:52Base hit. So a rubber aboard
01:30:54to start the inning.
01:30:56Well
01:30:58he keeps the hitting streak going
01:31:00with that ninth inning knock right there.
01:31:02Coming through under pressure.
01:31:04And not the ideal way
01:31:06to get the job done Boog. But it works.
01:31:08You know only once
01:31:10during DiMaggio's famous hitting streak
01:31:12did he wait until the ninth inning to
01:31:14extend it. That's pretty amazing.
01:31:16Yeah and the best thing to do is get that thing out
01:31:18of the way early. No doubt about it.
01:31:20You can move on with the game. Otherwise
01:31:22you start gripping the bat a little tighter
01:31:24as the game progresses towards the end.
01:31:38The next pitch misses.
01:31:40Two balls no strikes the count.
01:31:42Well the laid off man gets on. You want to minimize
01:31:44the threat by playing sound
01:31:46defense. Hopefully the pitcher can get a ball on the
01:31:48ground and they can roll him up for two.
01:31:502-0.
01:31:52Swings through that.
01:32:00The 2-1.
01:32:02They tried to get him to chase
01:32:04on a slider down and away.
01:32:18And the pitch.
01:32:22Fouls one away and now
01:32:243-2.
01:32:32Right handed reliever.
01:32:34Fouled off again.
01:32:36And it remains 3-2.
01:32:48And a foul
01:32:50and Baldy stays alive.
01:33:02Here comes a 3-2.
01:33:04Stays alive.
01:33:063-2.
01:33:183-2 on the way.
01:33:20Foul ball.
01:33:36Cracks his bat and pops him up.
01:33:38Morgan
01:33:40racing over to make the catch.
01:33:46The right fielder number 14.
01:33:48Jim
01:33:50Rice.
01:33:52Jim Rice
01:33:54up next for the Red Sox.
01:34:06Next offering is down low.
01:34:08Ball one.
01:34:18And misses inside.
01:34:26The pitch.
01:34:28Ground ball
01:34:30right side. Could be two.
01:34:32It's a second for one and that's a double
01:34:34play to end it.
01:34:36The ball for his first career save deserves to
01:34:38be on display at his house.
01:34:40It's kind of like when a restaurant frames its first dollar
01:34:42bill somewhere on a wall. You just can't
01:34:44forget your first save. 7-2
01:34:46your final here today.
