00:00Good evening Kapuso! I am your Kuya Kim who will give you the trivia behind the trending news on the Facebook post of the Philippine Eagle Foundation.

00:12Sad news that an eagle was found dead in Cebu. What was the cause of its death?

00:20This is the tragic disappearance of two Philippine Eagles in the Purawen Valley, Leyte, on June 28.

00:29One of these is Uswat, a male eagle that was rescued from Mount Apo last year.

00:38This is the first time that there is a transfer trial from Mindanao to another island, specifically in Leyte.

00:43These Philippine Eagles have a transmitter for monitoring.

00:47But did the P.E.F. or Philippine Eagle Foundation know about this on July 30 or more than a month after the disappearance of the eagles?

00:54They received a GPS reading from Uswat's transmitter that it was in the sea.

01:00What happened to Uswat?

01:03Kuya Kim, we know!

01:06The P.E.F. and the local government of Baybay immediately conducted a search and recovery operation.

01:11The location is in the bay of Baybay. The coordinates were emailed.

01:16Their search went as far as Baragay Kawit in Pilar, Cebu,

01:19where the eagles were found dead on August 3.

01:23When we arrived, it was already in the post-mortem stage. It was decomposing.

01:27So it was estimated based on the necropsy that it had been agonizing for 4 to 5 days.

01:31The eagles dove deep into the investigation and post-mortem examination.

01:36And this is when Uswat found out that it was possibly accidentally drowned.

01:39We're looking on that possibility also because of the constant wind and rain.

01:44Because they need thermals to fly. These thermals exist in terrains, mountains, lands.

01:50The Philippine eagles don't flap.

01:52So if they flap, it's energy consuming until it can't see the perch.

01:57Right now, we're mourning the sudden loss of Uswat.

02:00We need to identify the areas which are hazardous.

02:03The easiest thing to do is to inform also the coastal areas.

02:06Consider them as partners also, where they can go. The fishermen also know.

02:11But this is not the first case of accidental drowning of a Philippine eagle.

02:20According to the Philippine Eagle Foundation, Uswat's drowning is the 7th case of a Philippine eagle drowning.

02:27The first of these was recorded in 1984.

02:30When Dawan was rescued early after he drowned in Mati, Davao, Oriental.

02:35The Philippine eagle was the 7th to be rescued.
