Man Creates Wacky Costumes To Feed All The Hummingbirds

Guy starts dressing up in the weirdest costumes to attract hummingbirds — and he never expected the amazing turns his life would take

00:00The hummingbirds probably just expect something wacky to walk out the door at any moment.

00:11But they're happy as long as they're getting fed.

00:15I have hummingbirds that come every single day.

00:18My favorite hummingbird of all, his name is Noddy.

00:21He has a little deformity on his beak that looks like a knot.

00:27He would honestly show up once every five minutes.

00:30He's seen me in some of my wackiest costumes.

00:36He's a really hungry bird.

00:41A hummingbird showed up in the middle of the night and was tapping on my window.

00:46It's not normal behavior for a hummingbird.

00:50She was getting really fatigued, so I fed her sugar water.

00:55Since it was dark outside, I didn't want to let her go.

00:58She would potentially just fly right back into a window.

01:02So I kept her in a shoebox in a dark, quiet location.

01:06In the morning, I would let her go.

01:11For the first time since I had moved to California, I felt peace.

01:17It snapped me out of this funk that I was in.

01:20And it spurred my curiosity in this little creature that had flown up four stories.

01:28I started to flex my creativity by coming up with ways to feed hummingbirds.

01:34So I started creating these elaborate costumes.

01:43I really wanted to attract as many as possible.

01:46And hummingbirds are attracted to bright colors and flowers.

01:50So a lot of my costumes have just that.

01:53I've done so many wild and crazy costumes.

01:57Now it's become this alter ego of mine that I've created where I am their hum daddy.

02:07Since this happened, my infatuation with hummingbirds led to a lot of good things.

02:14It led to me learning how to be a wildlife rehabber and educator through the National Park Service.

02:23It makes me feel fulfilled.

02:26I also then got married and we bought our very first home.

02:31I have new hummingbirds that I feed.

02:35I have about a dozen feeders in my backyard.

02:38I have a bath for them that bubbles.

02:41My life is so different now because of hummingbirds.

02:44I'm going to continue befriending and advocating for hummingbirds whenever I can.
