13:10Welcome back to the Christmas edition of A Little Good News.
13:29You know, Christmas, of course, is a time of giving and a time of reaching out.
13:33And as we look at the film record in the CJLN archives, we see that it has been ever so.
13:39From the day we started back in 1955, and you look at the December tapes or the December film up through the years,
13:46it is a litany of organizations and people reaching out to other people, all of them sharing in the Christmas season.
13:53So much time was spent at orphanages, which are no longer prevalent in this province, and so much time spent by social clubs, social organizations visiting the various hospitals and institutions.
14:08And we'd like to share some of that with you now. We call this the spirit of Christmas.
14:14Sometimes you're inclined to think that things never get better in this whole world of ours.
14:18Well, they do. Remember this place and that symbol? This is the sanatorium, the San, as it used to be called.
14:27At Christmas, we were able to close this place eventually.
14:31While it was open, the sanatorium was known for the terrific Christmas display.
14:38That had, in terms of lights, you know, you remember back in the 50s and 60s when you'd go for a drive to look at the Christmas lights?
14:48Well, the sanatorium, as it stopped, was always de rigueur, torn down now.
14:57The scourge, that's what it was, of tuberculosis, virtually eliminated.
15:06So there is such a thing.
15:08That's progress.
15:11Tops of the road at that time. I think we're going to get a chance to look at a shot a little bit later in the program.
15:16Hardly develops at all. No malls then.
15:21Another time, another place, another parade in December in the snow.
15:27When I looked at this film first, it was hard for me to keep my eyes off the cars and trucks that went past the GMC with the double headlights.
15:36It's on the car box now, whispering the date.
15:42Santa Claus arriving by great truck and again, or sleigh and great truck, and again to the stadium parking lot.
15:54His worship, H.G.R. Mews, Harry Mews, sort of conveyed a sense that all was well.
16:06And again, the nativity scene, of course, a recurring theme since year zero, really.
16:14When you think about it, the great flatbed truck had the McNamara symbol on it in the 50s and the
16:21early 60s. The conservatives used to joke that the road to hell was paved with good
16:25intentions and McNamara's probably had the paving contract for it.
16:31Are you in the crowd?
16:35What happened to these little boys and girls? How has it been for them during the last 30-odd years?
16:46Well, in all the film of Christmas, I finally found something that was offensive to me.
16:54This was supplied, I think, by a mainland affiliate in a box entitled A Dog's Christmas.
17:04It was in A Christmas Carol that Charles Dickens wrote that it was at Christmas that want was most keenly felt.
17:13And there is just something inappropriate when there is so much want in the world, despite
17:24our best efforts. Well, if not best efforts, certainly efforts anyway.
17:27This is from 1963 and was a promotional film for a pet food company.

20:57Welcome back to the Christmas edition of A Little Good News, and you know, it is more than just a
21:02cliche to say that Christmas is a time of giving. It really is so, and it has been ever so, because
21:09if you look back at the film archives of CJON from 1955 back on, if you look through the December
21:16month in the film or the videotape in latter years, what you see really is a litany of organizations
21:22and individuals at Christmas time reaching out to others, and that ranges from service clubs
21:27visiting shut-ins to service clubs and individuals doing their bit for the orphanages that were
21:34very much a part of St. John's and of Newfoundland back in the 50s and up through the 60s. We call
21:41this piece now, The Joy of Giving. Happy to wish all our people, men and women, boys and girls,
21:51wherever they may be, the age-old hope for a merry Christmas. We have so much to be thankful for,
22:03we Canadians, we Newfoundlanders, this Christmas season, and for so many happy Christmases past.
22:12Merry, merry Christmas to you. That is very well put, actually. So much to be grateful for,
22:19not only now, but in Christmas's past, as the world spins on, as these skaters spin on in 1958.
22:32Prince of Wales, more of the faces of the season, and some great, great moments
22:42captured on film. There's a shot coming up, and there it is,
22:45helping a young child to his feet, warming cold feet in a skating rink. Gosh, this is great stuff.
22:55These are the doctors, and the lawyers, judges, and the Indian chiefs, left today, somewhere.
23:04One of them is sitting at home, and I'm sure that's very exciting to look at. That's me,
23:10that's me, singing to their son, or their daughter.
23:17In the same year, a quick look at the very good work of the Salvation Army. This was another year,
23:28and another trip through the various orphanages of St. John's. I remember Belvedere,
23:36Castle, Church of England. I'm sure there were more, but I'm not that old.
23:41I can remember them all. There's a boy scouts performing at Christmas. What a nice concept,
23:53the lifting up of voices in song during this holy season. None of this film has
24:01any sound on it. Now, in a way, that's good. You can put your own sound in.
24:10The choir is singing the song that you want them to sing. The trumpets are playing
24:14what you want them to play. Let's roll quickly now through these last little images
24:24of Christmas past, and have a look at some faces.
24:30Now, surely, isn't that something? Surely, what Christmas is all about?
24:38Very often, of course, Christmas is a time of celebration, but also, in a very real way,
24:45it is a time of remembrance of Christmas's past. Christmas is the season that sort of does that to
24:54it, isn't it? I don't think there is an adult who, during the Christmas season, does not think
25:02often of Christmas when he or she was a child, and something that we always communicate either
25:10by the spoken word or in written form to our children, but what it was like
25:19back then. There was a marvelous book that came out, Frank Galgai, I think, a couple of years ago.
25:24It was a compilation. It was called A Christmas Box, writings from as early as the late 1700s
25:32about celebrations of Christmas here in Newfoundland. Don Jameson had a particularly
25:38nice piece in that. That would have been Christmas, I think, in the late 20s, early 30s
25:43here in St. John's, but, well, you see the point I'm making anyway. This was the lieutenant governor
25:51of the day. Have a look at the hospital now, and any time you're inclined to think
25:57or mention the good old days, look at the size of the ward in this hospital. Enormous strides.
26:06We talked a little bit earlier about tuberculosis and the lights at the old sanatorium that
26:12tremendous strides have been made in terms of health care anyway. Now, there may be other areas
26:20where tremendous strides have not been made, but we are surely better able to look after the sick
26:27in 1999. Look at these faces, folks. These are million-dollar people.
26:35This little thing was sent in by a company that makes plum pudding. I'm going to show you this.
26:42One of the things that Christmas is, perceived as, is a time of plenty.
26:48There's a little promotional film they sent in. Didn't know what it was till it got to the very
26:52end when they started to put labels on it, and I could read that it said plum pudding.
26:58I don't even know if it is. There you go.
27:01Promise profits do not open until Christmas end.
27:05Condemns me to Water Street, to the steps of the courthouse,
27:11to the arrival of Santa Claus at either the London, or the West Loop bus.
27:25In Santa Claus, as we mentioned earlier, looking very much like Father Christmas,
27:28that was the musical clock. Yes, you're right, if you're one of those people that
27:33if you're one of those people that keeps their eyes on the background in this film,
27:39look at the crowds. Tremendous crowds, which is what the Santa Claus parade
27:48draws today. You see, it does go on. People say Christmas is not the same as it used to be.
27:55Well, I suggest to you it's better than it used to be.
28:00And we hope that this Christmas 1991 is the best for all of you.
28:07There is one more shot after they get through the bandanas, as they used to be called.
28:14There they are, right there. I want to finish with this shot there,
28:18because that's what it's all about. The wonder of a child at Christmas.
28:29While our time is drawing to a close, and I could talk from now until midnight about the
28:46importance of Christmas and what an important festival, an important season it is to us,
28:51and its meaning in our society. However, suffice it to say that it has been a pleasure for me,
28:57and I am indeed privileged to have been part of your Christmas and part of this happy season.
