00:00Paddy Newton and Marsha Hines are two of the country's most loved performers with
00:05careers spanning across decades. From Logies to Arias and countless TV gigs now
00:11the Power of House performers are coming together and lighting up the stage in
00:15Grease the Musical.
00:30Critics are calling it the show of the summer.
00:37Grease the Musical has taken Melbourne by storm, met by singing audiences and
00:42standing ovations.
00:51It's keeping Marsha Hines
01:01For co-star Patti Newton appearing in stage productions has kept her going
01:07after losing her husband Bert. The pair were inseparable on screen and off. Now
01:14from their real-life love story to a tale loved by generations. Patti and
01:19Marsha are reminding us all that Grease is still the word.
01:24Oh that music! Marsha Hines and Patti Newton join us now from the actual set.
01:29Good morning to both of you. Patti you just finished Mary Poppins and you've
01:33moved straight into Grease playing Miss Lynch. You must be loving being back on
01:37stage. Oh look I am it's it's absolutely fabulous it's sort of you know it said
01:45in that little piece then that after losing Bert life is tough but I think
01:51this has helped me no end and this particular cast is just so wonderful and
01:57I've made a new best friend. We've got a bestie here. So it's terrific. It's great yeah.
02:04What a fantastic double act that is just amazing. The set looks fantastic. Marsha
02:10you have the role of Teen Angel and sing the iconic beauty school dropout. How
02:14does it feel to fill actor Frankie Avalon's shoes? Pretty huge to be honest
02:20you know and I don't know that many women have done this role either so I
02:23feel really honoured to do it and the cast is outstanding. We've got Jay LaGuy,
02:28we've got Patti Newton, you got me, the older people in the company and we're
02:32having a ball. We're very old. You are not. I flatly reject that. Yeah you're bringing the experience, the lived experience. It looks
02:43absolutely fantastic. Patti of course we know that Bert would be so proud of you.
02:48He starred in Grace in 2013 didn't he? He did and it was a fantastic show then
02:57but this one is very different because there's a new feel to the whole show. The
03:05music is actually the same and that is what gets the audience. We have
03:10people singing right through the show and they stand up at the end and it's
03:16such a wonderful election. It's so nice to have some joy in our lives and that's what we're all
03:21bringing the cast and all the musicians, the lighting, we bring some joy to
03:26people's lives and the kids, there's kids everywhere in the audience too. It's
03:31wonderful. And I know that Bert loved doing this show so much so he would be
03:37very thrilled that I now have the opportunity to be as excited about it as
03:44him. And she's good by the way. There's absolutely no doubt about that. Bert played Vince Fontaine, Patti. There's kind of a beautiful synchronicity to this isn't there? Yes, look Bert played it, he just loved it. He loved being with the young
04:06ensemble and having so many young performers around him and I think
04:12because of that it brought the youth out in him and actually Jay is much the
04:20same in the way he does the role isn't he? We've got to be careful we don't
04:25look at him because he can easily make us laugh. Bert would be thrilled for me.
04:32Marta, the costumes, the music, the whole show, it's iconic isn't it? When you
04:41listen to these songs again even just in that set up package you can't help but
04:45get involved in it. It's fantastic to be very honest I've been saying to Patti
04:51and everybody in the cast at the end of the show everybody's standing in the
04:56audience and they know every word to be sung and it's just so great to see isn't it?
05:01We're having a ball, it's just great. And the sets are fabulous. There are these
05:07bleachers that go up quite high and me being an old dear you know everyone's
05:13going oh I hope she doesn't fall! But I'm very well protected. She's very well protected. Yes and I'm very well looked after and it's a
05:23it's a lovely experience for me. The costumes by James Brown are really
05:27something else. What an absolute treat to be speaking to you both. Thank you so
05:31much for being with us. Grease the Musical playing now at Her Majesty's
05:35Theatre in Melbourne. A big thank you again to you both.
