00:00And I'm just...
00:02Now, you know what would really help?
00:04Um, because I did...
00:06I should have, I could have five of these mics.
00:08I should have just brought a bunch of them.
00:10We could walk the paths around.
00:12No, you guys could just have your
00:14mics cuddled right up. Yeah, I'll just have a link.
00:16Yeah, just get right under the arm there and uh...
00:18I'll get one for uh...
00:20No, I'll get one too.
00:22We love talking like this.
00:24This is my favorite.
00:26Yeah, that's what I thought, Ethan.
00:28This is more cuddly than we've been all week.
00:30Ever. Actually, this is probably
00:32more than we would ever do.
00:34Ever?
00:36Like, when there's a...
00:38No, not like that, but like when there's a sofa,
00:40are you gonna do this? You're like...
00:42No, you're gonna be like, oh yeah.
00:44You're gonna be like, get off me.
00:46I know, give me a little space. Finally, we're home.
00:48I got some.
00:50It feels so good.
00:52Oh, you're like, I like it!
00:54Now we're like out of work mode.
00:56As soon as this happens, I'm not in work mode anymore.
00:58And so that's why you can't do it.
01:00I know, we can't...
01:02A little trouser turn?
01:04No, no, honestly, I don't want to talk about that.
01:06But that's...anyway, that's not what I want to do.
01:08I don't have a chest pocket.
01:10What? Ew, what are we talking about?
01:12We're not.
01:14I don't want to know what we're talking about.
01:16Absolutely not.
01:20Is your lady friend coming? No.
01:22Oh, okay.
01:24I mean...
01:26Fine.
01:28I thought we would just want to do the teachers.
01:30I thought it would be funny, though, because...
01:32I'll go get her.
01:34Well, I can, because they can.
01:36And then you start talking about
01:38where you're from real quick.
01:40I can get her to do that.
01:42She's gonna be like, what?
01:44No, she'll be like, I came because they're here.
01:46Is that how she'll say it?
01:48I know, right?
01:50I've been called the songbird of a generation,
01:52but...
01:54It's true.
01:56I'm a videographer.
01:58I have Jermaine Campbell videography,
02:00and in 2018, I was
02:02doing a little barter with Mary,
02:04the organizer here,
02:06and she said if I make some films
02:08and capture the essence of this wonderful
02:10phenomenon, that
02:12I could get free admission here
02:14and come hang out, and we've been doing it ever since,
02:16and I brought my whole family and my little kids,
02:18and we'll be coming back as long as they'll let us.
02:20And this year,
02:22this year, you showed a video before
02:24that will probably be released, will be released
02:26soon, of a video of
02:28just what this place is about, capturing all the magic
02:30and stuff, and before that, we thought maybe this
02:32was just a scam. This has been a scam
02:34for, you know, six, seven years just to get,
02:36just to come here, but no, he proved it.
02:38He proved it.
02:40Not even any batteries in the camera.
02:42Hold on a second. A little closer here.
02:44It's a great scheme.
02:46Thank you.
02:48Yeah, I respect it.
02:50And we got to watch it in the participants
02:52concert, which is on Thursday night when all the
02:54participants get to come up and perform, but we started
02:56with his filming, it was like a little premiere,
02:58it was a special thing for all of us to see,
03:00to see it
03:02showed so eloquently what this place is,
03:04and all the capturing the power, and the
03:06humor, and the fun, and the family,
03:08and the music, and the spirituality,
03:10all of it, you captured it
03:12all there. It's really great.
03:14Yeah, I appreciate that.
03:18Oh
03:44I think this might be a fool's errand
03:46here.
03:48I got nothing better to do.
03:50And what's your film called?
04:16Well, I don't know
04:18I don't know what I
04:20what will it be called?
04:22Fort Townsend Acoustic Blues Festival.
04:24Exactly, that's what I'll call it. Fort Townsend Acoustic Blues Festival.
04:26And
04:28nothing too creative, but
04:30does the job.
04:32That's what it's about. It's about 50 minutes
04:34long, and
04:36I'll make a couple quick little cuts, and then
04:38release it to the public, let it out to the wild.
04:40Something that we call
04:42a round robin.
04:44Anybody have any idea what that
04:46might be?
04:48Do you think it's a bird? Oh, you do?
04:50What do you got?
04:54Oh, I guess I can't hear you.
04:56Well
05:00I married my
05:02wife after I did
05:04an acting degree down at the
05:06University of Victoria in
05:08British Columbia. She was
05:10studying there too, and
05:12we went up to
05:14her community, which is the
05:16Gwasala-Naukhtau Nation up at the top of
05:18Vancouver Island, and her people are
05:20just rife with beautiful stories and
05:22mythology and songs, and a lot of
05:24really important language revitalization
05:26because colonization
05:28really ran amok
05:30on their people and devastated
05:32a lot of their practices and traditions,
05:34and a lot of people have been holding
05:36on tight to them and reinstilling
05:38them in the youth. So
05:40a lot of the elders asked me to help
05:42tell the stories and trusted me with the stories,
05:44and I started making films to try to
05:46help preserve some of those things and to build them
05:48up and amplify them,
05:50and one story led to another,
05:52led to another, and then I started traveling
05:54all over the province, helping other people
05:56in other nations do the same thing,
05:58and before you know it, I just, you know,
06:00I wasn't teaching anymore, and I was doing film work
06:02full-time, so I dedicate
06:04most of my talents to
06:06indigenous content up
06:08up north in Canada there,
06:10and then some
06:12good, mostly African-American
06:14content here to the blues down here.
06:16Nice. Yeah. Thanks for being
06:18on my show. Oh, hey, well there we go.
06:28You're vivacious and kind of like
06:30a Spice Girl with your
06:32personality. He was like
06:34overalls really sick.
06:36Okay.
06:58Okay.
07:00Nick and Ethan just a little closer, would you please?
07:02There you go.
07:04There you go.
07:06Saddle up behind him there.
07:08Let me hold his waist.
07:10Gently though.
07:12Plenty of outtakes.
07:14Gently.
07:16Okay, so my absolutely
07:18gut-busting, hilarious idea
07:20would be, you know, Ethan was here
07:22first, so I started
07:24in whatever year you started,
07:26and then I told all them about it, and then Nick
07:28would talk about, well, then that's why I came,
07:30and then she'd go, that's why I came, and then you
07:32at the end, you got a little comment, sort of chariot up.
07:34Well, then they came, and that's why I came.
07:38We'll try it out. We'll try it out. See if we can get some
07:40comical time in here.
07:42Alright.
07:44Ethan. Ethan. That's me.
07:46My name's Ethan Limelon. I came
07:48here, my first year was in
07:502017,
07:52and
07:54I think I'm in, yeah, wait, wait, just say
07:56that. Let's do it last.
07:58My name's Ethan, I came in 2018.
08:00My name's Nick,
08:02I came because he came.
08:04What's your name?
08:06I don't know what my name is. Valerie.
08:08Valerie, I came because he came, and then we'll
08:10do a little, and then we'll do a bit of a follow-up thing
08:12with who
08:14y'all are. Well, my name's Ethan Limelon,
08:16I started coming here in 2017.
08:18My name's Nick Pence, and I came
08:20here because he came here. I'm Valerie
08:22Kirchhoff, and I came because they came
08:24here. I'm Karen Kirchhoff,
08:26and I came here because they came here.
08:28Let's try it once more.
08:30We got enough. I was like, what did I do?
08:32That's where I got.
08:34Mine is so hot. Mine?
08:36Yeah. Which one?
08:38Yours. Mine? Yours.
08:40It's so hot. I don't want up here. I can tell you that
08:42very much. I don't want to be like this.
08:44I know, but don't put your jacket down.
08:46Okay, I got it. Thank you.
08:48Thank you. Okay.
08:50Oh, so I did it again?
08:52Yes. I told you, we're not used to this.
08:54This cuddling thing. No, no, no.
08:56It's not the cuddling, it's the...
08:58You're like, you're like
09:00borrowing me like a cane.
09:02Alright,
09:04here we go. On three. One, two,
09:06three. My name is
09:08Ethan Lion-1. I started teaching
09:10here in 2017.
09:12My name's Nick Pence. I came here
09:14in 2023
09:16because Ethan came here.
09:18I'm Valerie Kirchhoff, and I
09:20came this year
09:22because they came here.
09:24I'm Karen Kirchhoff, and I
09:26came here this year because they came here.
09:28Alright, Ethan, tell me a little
09:30bit about this place. Alright, well
09:32this place
09:34is a haven for people
09:36who really care about
09:38the acoustic blues tradition,
09:40the pre-war stuff,
09:42on all the different instruments.
09:48It's just a very special place
09:50where we can all come together,
09:52students and faculty
09:54alike, and share in this
09:56great thing and build a community
09:58and strengthen those bonds
10:00that make being a musician
10:02worth being a musician.
10:04Nick, how does
10:06this differ from other places,
10:08other gigs that you've been to?
10:12So, do you write music?
10:14Of course.
10:16And I just saw you perform.
10:18Tell me a little bit about
10:20how you used to
10:22write those crazy sketches.
10:24It's done by inspiration, so
10:26I don't have any contract
10:28songs usually that I
10:30sit down and say, hey, I'm going to write me a song about.
10:32Nah, it just comes from
10:34inspiration, sometimes in dreams
10:36and other ways, so that's the main
10:38way that I write songs.
10:40You have to be inspired.
10:42Is there someone you're just
10:44itching to play a particular song with?
10:46Me? Yeah, who are you looking to hang with?
10:48I always like playing with Andrew Ali.
10:50He's just
10:52the most friendly, fierce fella
10:54you can fool around with.
10:56And, uh, musically.
10:58Yeah.
11:00Oh yeah, we didn't tell you
11:02what we do on Tuesdays.
11:04I'm glad you came Friday,
11:06because Tuesday's really crazy.
11:08But I'm on camera
11:10if you want to check it out.
11:12Yeah, right.
11:14It's always fun hanging with John Tavius.
11:16He makes you feel welcome.
11:18It's hard to start naming names
11:20because we got
11:22to play with John Maxwell
11:24and that was really special too.
11:26Mary Flower. She's going to come to St. Louis
11:28and play with all of us in October.
11:30If there was a slightly bigger gap here, there would be Mary Flower.
11:32I love watching you guys get along, man.
11:34Tell a little bit about last year.
11:36I thought you guys knew each other forever,
11:38but you're just like a sweetheart to her.
11:40Yeah, we met Mary
11:42last year and
11:44I was nervous.
11:46It was my first year.
11:48I was scared out of my pants
11:50to even be here.
11:52So I was walking into the class
11:54and she stopped me and told me
11:56that she had liked my playing from the night before
11:58and I was like,
12:00I had to stop crying
12:02before teaching this class.
12:04We just hit it off and we started playing a little bit.
12:06Last year, John Atkinson was here
12:08and he was recording.
12:10So we learned some of her songs
12:12and she took us out to breakfast one day
12:14and she just immediately
12:16became part of the family.
12:18We play the same, we like the same
12:20approach to grooves.
12:22So now we see each other
12:24and it's special.
12:26We text and call each other through the year.
12:42Oh Alexa
12:44Oh
12:46Oh Dee Dee
12:48Oh Alexa
12:50Oh Dee Dee
12:52Oh Alexa
12:54Oh Alexa
12:58It's been up a long tour.
13:00You're carrying her guitar for her and everything.
13:02She was off of a long tour
13:04yesterday.
13:06But also that's Nick's way.
13:08When Nick finds a way he can help
13:10or care, he's going to do that thing.
13:12That's what we're trying to do
13:14with some of the elders too.
13:16It comes out of you naturally.
13:18It comes out of me very naturally.
13:20Changing her strings and carrying her guitar
13:22and helping her with her luggage.
13:24I think that's why
13:26those are the moments that make this a family.
13:28You just come in as a new
13:30person and you're just right in there.
13:32Oh yeah, and the elders do
13:34get treated nicely.
13:36Jimmy Duffer got treated really nice.
13:38Everybody does.
13:40It's nice to see that coming out of people naturally.
13:42Really nice.
13:44What do you think? Any last ideas?
13:46Let's do this again.
13:48Let's do it again next year.
13:52What do you think this year?
13:56I'm really compelled.
13:58Act like I'm still right there.
14:00I want to get a couple of fun shots from the side there.
14:02Smiling.
14:04Laughing.
14:08Something.
14:10Because today,
14:12there's a lot of processing that goes on on Saturday
14:14as you're trying to work through it all.
14:16What's that?
14:18We stuck around.
14:20Oh yes, absolutely.
14:22I've never done that before, so it was the first time ever.
14:24I love that.
14:26Today, I was still
14:28relaxed.
14:30The people that were leaving, the difference of
14:32how you were feeling versus them.
14:34Waking up the next day,
14:36with nowhere to go,
14:38with nothing to do,
14:40but play music and really enjoy
14:42the space all the way.
14:44You miss all the activity, but at the same time,
14:46you don't.
14:48What time do we need to do the recording?
14:50I think next year we should have a recording
14:52for people.
14:54Sunday.
14:56Even just Sunday.
14:58We can all have a meal and have a day.
15:00That process of
15:02still being with each other
15:04and mentally
15:06wrapping it up and getting
15:08excited for the next year.
15:10That's the cool thing.
15:12It is kind of like,
15:14oh, I can't believe it's over, but then you're already thinking
15:16like, okay, but it does happen.
15:18That's the cherry on top.
15:20It's a consolation.
15:22Tuesday, I was like, ah shit, it's only Tuesday.
15:24Yeah, that's always, don't let it fool you.
15:26What the fuck?
15:28Don't let Tuesdays fool you.
15:30Hey, thanks a lot.
15:32Yeah, it was fun.
15:34Just chatting.
15:36That's right. Who knows what we'll do with it,
15:38but you know, it's in the pocket.
15:40That's the most important part, is to get
15:42it recorded, right?
15:44Karen Kirchhoff.
15:46Nick Pence.
15:48Ethan Leinwand.
15:50Valerie Kirchhoff.
15:54I was saying it right,
15:56but I wasn't sure until
15:58we were saying it before he came to St. Louis,
16:00and then the first thing he said in the car
16:02was like, Leinwand.
16:04I was like, Leinwand.
16:06I always put Sonny's last name on you.
16:08You call me Ethan Leland?
16:10All the time.
16:12Oh yeah, shit.
16:14If Sonny were my brother,
16:16that would be another layer.
16:18That would be another hole.
16:20I would marry him.
16:22He's a nigger to talk to.
16:28All right.
16:30We're basically all adopting each other.
16:32Yeah, I'm cool.
16:34I'll take care of you when you can't wash the soap home.
16:36Hey man, absolutely.
16:42It's so special that you do this.
16:44It really is.
16:46So many things that people don't capture this way that go on every year.
16:48You have the videos, man.
16:50It's really special.
16:58You
17:00You
17:02You
17:04You
17:06You
17:08You
17:10You
17:12You
17:14You
17:16You
17:18You
17:20You
17:22You
17:24You
