During House floor remarks prior to the Congressional recess, Rep. Jim McGovern (D-MA) slammed House Republicans over their attempt to hold Attorney General Merrick Garland in contempt.

00:00For what purposes does the gentleman from Massachusetts seek recognition?
00:05I ask unanimous consent to withdraw the offending words.
00:11Without objection, the gentleman from Massachusetts is recognized.
00:17Mr. Speaker, I just want to say for the record that this is the second time there has been
00:25an attempt to silence me by the freedom-loving Republican conference, so much for the First
00:30Amendment.
00:31But look, Mr. Speaker, I get it.
00:37They are desperate to distract from their failures.
00:40Their own members are saying that they have done nothing, and clearly they have deserted
00:45the American people in deference to Trump.
00:48And I get it.
00:49They want to distract from Project 2025.
00:51The gentleman will suspend.
00:54The chair will remind members to refrain from engaging in personalities toward presumptive
00:57nominees for the office of president.
01:00Okay.
01:01I'm trying to think what I can say.
01:02I get it.
01:03They want to distract from Project 2025, distract from their own nationwide abortion bans, distract
01:09from their giveaways to big donors of special interest.
01:12And what do we get?
01:14We get unserious stuff like this on the floor.
01:18And I would just say to the American people, you might not agree with Democrats on everything.
01:23You might not think we're perfect, but we are focused on our job.
01:27We're focused on fighting inflation, focused on getting prices down, focused on bringing
01:31jobs back from overseas, on standing up for democracy, and on protecting the freedom of
01:38our constituents.
01:40And contrast that with what Republicans are focused on, wasting more time on political
01:45stunts instead of working with us to get things done.
01:49It is as simple and as sad as that.
01:52And with that, Mr. Speaker, I urge a no vote on this – I've got to take this word out
01:57now – on this resolution.
01:58And I reserve.
