00:00The training that I did prior to this was, of course, I had to trim down.
00:17I had to lose weight since it was a war.
00:20So, that's one of my preparations.
00:23And the second would be my learning Nihongo.
00:28Because this is a different level of learning a language.
00:34Because my Japanese lines are longer.
00:36My scenes are really heavy most of the time.
00:39I had to incorporate memorizing the Japanese language while still focused on the emotions.
00:46Mentally preparing myself too because it's a heavy drama teleserie.
00:51I would say this is the most challenging teleserie I have done in my life.
00:55Obviously, I'm with the likes of Dennis, Alden, Sanya.
01:00As for Barbie, I'm already used to her.
01:02To prepare for the role, I watched documentaries about World War II.
01:09I talked to the comfort women who are still alive today.
01:14The process of writing the script is a big thing for me.
01:21Artists nowadays are different.
01:23Here in Pulang Araw, because they have their roots there,
01:27they learn, they know, and they get to know the characters that we play.
01:32Not just one person focuses, but everyone, including the production.
01:37You can feel our location.
01:40It's like we're in the past.
01:42Everyone studied, even our clothes.
01:46Even our hair, we can see how it is.
01:50It's just for a moment.
01:52It needs time.
01:54That's a big thing for us to believe while watching.
01:58We can feel that we're going back to that time while watching Pulang Araw.
02:03Studying other languages, our translator helped us.
02:07They help us prepare.
02:10We have a lot of Japanese lines that need to be convincing
02:15and the period is correct because of that time.
02:18The Nihongo used by the Japanese, especially the military,
02:22is different because you can see the hierarchy there.
02:24The tone is different, the address to each person.
02:27There are a lot of details that are needed.
02:29The translators that are in the set helped us.
02:33Before that, when you read the script,
02:35you think of the most important scenes that you need to focus on
02:41because it's history and everything that's shown in the program needs to be correct.
02:47The preparation really happens to me when I'm already in the set.
02:53That's where I really wear Adelina's clothes.
02:56We're here in the kind of locations that we really bring to the 1940s setting.
03:02So it's easier for me to characterize and prepare for the scenes when I'm already here.
03:07Also, one of the challenges that I encountered here
03:11is the deep Tagalog words that we don't use anymore today.
03:16What I learned and what I discovered that is a faster way for me
03:22is to memorize it out loud, not just in my mind.
03:25I read it, I repeat it until I get used to my tongue.
03:30Like ha, munting, iyon, iyan.
03:33Because we don't use those simple words anymore in our time.
03:38Bulang Araw, because it was written a long time ago.
03:41So it was really written by Mr. Jet Doctolero, our head writer.
03:44The attention to detail and the way the stories are told
03:49by the different people, the people who talked to our creatives,
03:52is what we put in our story.
03:54Our stories are not just made up.
03:58It's based on the true stories of people who lived during World War II,
04:03which is the Japanese occupation.
04:05Our preparations here were not easy
04:07because I experienced a legacy series after I did the illustration.
04:14When we saw the materials that we were collecting,
04:17we saw the effort of all the people involved in this production.
04:23And I'm proud because at least the message we want to convey to the viewers,
04:28that's what people are looking for now,
04:31based on the materials they see in Bulang Araw.
04:34That's why I'm happy and proud.
04:36And we also want to look at our efforts.
04:40This is not just a show for the network,
04:42this is not just a show for the audience,
04:44this is a show for the Filipinas and Filipinos around the world.
