00:00What's happening? I've just run out of fuel.
00:04Run out of fuel?
00:05In Newcastle, Sergeant Dave Roberts is conducting a search for a can of petrol.
00:11There's a double base in there.
00:13That's a double base.
00:15Luckily, the driver's on hand to pull a few strings.
00:18Get it out.
00:20Can you? A double base.
00:24Get some fuel and put it in.
00:28Do you want to jump in?
00:31Are we on? We're on.
00:33No problem at all.
00:35Right, safe travels. Put your lights on, though.
00:37Thanks very much.
00:43It is pretty amazing what you can get at the back of a car.
00:46You see all sorts.
00:47Cars with drugs, criminals, burglars.
00:49Never had a double base before.
00:51I'm not a musical person.
00:53Apart from singing in the shower, that's about your limit.
01:01UK police forces have been sent over 100,000 dash cam clips,
01:07exposing the most dangerous drivers on our roads.
01:12All hell has broken loose on our highways.
01:19You on a lesson? At least it wasn't your test.
01:22Join the motorway cops of Northumbria Police.
01:26Are we going? Why, aye, of course we're going.
01:29As they drive criminals of the north-east off the roads.
01:34Crash, crash, crash.
01:36And put the deadliest drivers behind bars.
01:39Stand still!
01:42What do you think you are?
01:44I'm a police officer. What do I look like? I'm in fancy dress.
01:46Do whatever you want. Do you want to arrest me? Do it.
01:50Getting a little bit bored of you now.
01:53Helping them in their battle with idiots behind the wheel is dash cam.
01:59It's vital evidence.
02:01Does everyone have any dash cam at all?
02:03And proof that Britain's dumbest drivers are a law unto themselves.
02:10Police one, criminal nil.
02:19Tonight.
02:21Crash, crash, crash.
02:23A dangerous driver on the run.
02:25It's going to be a deacon.
02:27Leaves behind vital evidence.
02:30Where did you find him?
02:31In the car.
02:35A multi-car pile-up.
02:37Honestly, what a nightmare.
02:39Gives football fans extra time on the A1.
02:43On the Premier League we go and we get to Europe.
02:47Absolute havoc.
02:49And a shocking car crash sees a cyclist seriously injured.
02:53His legs were mangled around the bike. I managed to put him in a recovery position.
03:07Northumbria Police is celebrating 50 years of service to the people of the North East of England.
03:18And at Eaton Lane, Nick in Newcastle, another momentous occasion for the force is being marked.
03:25Have a seat, young man. Have a seat.
03:27Thank you.
03:29Been reviewing that job from last night?
03:31All right, yes.
03:32And I've got great pleasure in presenting you with your stinger badge.
03:37Mint.
03:38So congratulations, young man.
03:39Thank you very much.
03:40Wear that with pride.
03:41I will do.
03:43He successfully stung a car, which is quite a step in the life of a traffic cop.
03:49So thankfully, when you sting a car, you get awarded a small badge.
03:53Over the moon.
03:54It is the kudos, the sort of top of the list.
03:57You want to get your stinger badge.
03:59Normally I'm behind the car chasing it, which is good.
04:02But this occasion I managed to get the stinger in for a change.
04:05Thank you very much.
04:13Having earned his badge of honour...
04:15I'm a bit warm tonight.
04:17PC Brian Camsell is playing it cool on the roads of Newcastle.
04:21I've had to turn the heated seat off.
04:27There's certainly stuff to keep our eyes open for.
04:29So we're out, have a look around and just see what we can come across, really.
04:35See where the night brings us and the radio sets us.
04:42There's a female walking down the central motorway in the city centre.
04:51Can a unit make their way?
04:57They've passed a female walking down the central motorway.
05:01Late at night, dark, fast stretch of road.
05:04The concern is that this person is going to get run over and potentially killed.
05:08So we'll head down and see if we can find her
05:11and make sure we can get her off the road without incident.
05:22Pull over, mate.
05:32Tango 1286, Pursuit, Pursuit.
05:35T-PAC train, suitable vehicle, requesting authority for the Pursuit.
05:40Pursuit is authorized.
05:42It looks like this one's got something to hide and he's reacting to my blue lights.
05:46He thinks I want him stopped. He's trying to get away from us.
05:51VW Golf, currently Richardson Road.
06:04City centre, high risk.
06:09Blackhead Street, Blackhead Street.
06:17Temporary off-road, crashed into Bollards.
06:20Generally towards the central motorway.
06:23Heavy damage on the front end.
06:30Central motorway northbound, CME, speed 5-0.
06:35Taking the junction, taking the junction.
06:40Crash, crash, crash.
06:42It's going to be a deacon.
06:59Motorways might be getting smarter.
07:04But drivers aren't.
07:06Making a hard job of the hard shoulder.
07:13And slipping up on slip roads.
07:20Life in the fast lane...
07:26...isn't for everyone.
07:32Tango 1286, Pursuit, Pursuit.
07:36Temporary off-road, crashed into Bollards.
07:40Brian is in hot pursuit of a reckless driver causing mayhem on the streets of Newcastle.
07:49Crash, crash, crash.
07:51It's going to be a deacon.
07:55Round the back of Fairfield College.
08:01Up on the embankment!
08:04The vehicles start jumping over the walls, under the underpass.
08:07It's going to be the southbound central motorway.
08:11Tango 05, did you see anybody?
08:14Yeah, 3511, I'm out there.
08:16Two hot bins, white males, tall, slim build, tattered trusses.
08:22I don't know if I managed to get back over.
08:25There's also a footpath in the city centre.
08:29Total loss.
08:33I've just been for a cross-country run.
08:36But while Brian's been clocking up the miles,
08:39other officers have discovered a key piece of evidence.
08:44Where did you find him?
08:46In the car.
08:47He was in the car?
08:48Yeah.
08:49Oh, right.
08:50Well, I turned up, and I'd seen your car, but I couldn't see you.
08:53And then I seen him moving in the back.
08:55But he's still in the back, he couldn't get out because of the way the seats are.
08:58It's a two-door.
08:59Has he said anything?
09:01In all my excitement to chase after two runners,
09:04I didn't realise there was a third person in the back of the car.
09:09He's now under arrest in suspicion of aggravated theft of the motor vehicle.
09:13We'll have a little look through the car.
09:21Full front end is missing off this.
09:25It sort of went underneath the car,
09:27caught down the near side and then discarded on that junction.
09:30Don't know whether there's a level of inability of the driver,
09:36or whether it's something as simple as they're intoxicated.
09:39Hopefully, there's a little bit of a clue being left in the car.
09:44They've left the keys in the ignition.
09:48Mobile phone on the driver's seat.
09:52There's a nice smartphone.
09:54I'm still looking to do some downloads of that interrogation,
09:57see if we can work out who it belongs to.
09:59It would be nice to get her to back one of the people running off.
10:02It just happened all too quick, and I wasn't quite quick enough.
10:05Frustrating.
10:09The lad that's 1223 has got detained.
10:12Have you got his details in front of you?
10:14There's quite a bit on him for being a young man.
10:1711 lock-ups.
10:18Christine, can you look at his associate?
10:20So is it ****** born 2007?
10:23Associate of Britain.
10:25Perfect.
10:26That's the contact details on the mobile phone left on the driver's seat.
10:29Can you add those to the log?
10:32I know who the driver is.
10:36We've looked at our records with regards to the arrested male from the car,
10:40and the details on that mobile phone,
10:42and lo and behold, the two are associated with each other.
10:46Not a total loss like I thought.
10:50It is a result at the end of the day, I'm quite pleased with it.
10:57The stand-out driving was pretty shocking, really.
11:00I would say that he had no experience behind the wheel.
11:03He can't drive for toffee.
11:06He's made contact with bollards.
11:08It could have been a pedestrian on the side of the road
11:10that he's taken out and potentially killed.
11:13A bit disappointed that I didn't get him.
11:15I'm not sure if I would have been able to get him.
11:18I'm not sure if I would have been able to get him.
11:21I'm not sure if I would have been able to get him.
11:23I'm not sure if I would have been able to get him.
11:25I'm not sure if I would have been able to get him.
11:26Perhaps I need to do a little bit more in the gym on the treadmill.
11:29I found it amusing how the two of them
11:32legged it from the car and left the mate high and dry, stuck in the back.
11:35A three-door car, he couldn't get out, so
11:38whether the three of them are still friends afterwards
11:40will maybe have to be seen later on.
11:56All I'm doing now is just checking, making sure I've got everything handy.
11:59I've got all my kit here.
12:01I've got my jacket folded up, got my important documents, my evidence bags.
12:06I've got my snacks, my coffee, rice.
12:10PC Marianne Hutchison is fully equipped
12:13for her first ever solo shift as a qualified motorway cop.
12:20I've got the reins to be let loose, which
12:22I don't know if it's a good thing or not, but
12:24hopefully it is.
12:26Happy days.
12:32Right, let's have a little wander about.
12:38See if we can cause a bit of mayhem.
12:41Mayhem Marianne.
12:44I'm not going to bite anyone else.
12:47I've had a tutor for the past 12 weeks
12:50and today I've been given my wings to go out and cause carnage.
12:55So mayhem Marianne seems to stick.
12:58Let's see what's out and about and live up to the name.
13:02You are winding me up.
13:05Are you absolutely joking me?
13:10There's a wave of AW Golf that's just come absolutely flying down the road.
13:16It's a bit of a mess.
13:18I've got to get out of here.
13:20I've got to get out of here.
13:22I've got to get out of here.
13:24I've got to get out of here.
13:26I've got to get out of here.
13:28I've got to get out of here.
13:29It came absolutely flying down.
13:33Clearly doesn't say that there's a police car running alongside him
13:38and he's absolutely flying so I'm going to try and catch up with him
13:42and say why on earth he's driving like that because that's just ridiculous.
13:50Reckless drivers often have something to hide.
13:59Sunderland.
14:01And an Audi driver is flooring it through a housing estate.
14:05Refusing to stop for Northumbria's motorway cops,
14:08he races through a roundabout the wrong way.
14:12But as officers catch up,
14:15his driving gets even more high risk.
14:19Hitting the gas on the opposite side of the road
14:26before screeching to a stop.
14:30But he's playing a dangerous game of cat and mouse with the cops.
14:36The driver eventually abandoned the vehicle
14:39but left paperwork with his name and address on it.
14:43Leading cops straight to him.
14:46He was found guilty of dangerous driving,
14:48driving while disqualified
14:50and driving without insurance.
14:53He was sentenced to 12 months in prison
14:56and banned from driving for two years.
15:00You are winding me up.
15:05This car has went absolutely flying past us.
15:09Clearly not realised he's went past the police car.
15:13In Newcastle,
15:15Marianne is behind a reckless speeder.
15:19Oh, is he going to stop?
15:22Oh, is he going to stop?
15:29Yep, he's coming to a stop. Happy days.
15:33I'm going to get him in the back here
15:35because that is just ridiculous.
15:38Absolutely not having him driving on like that.
15:45Get in my car.
15:48Get your seat in there and I'll come and have a chat with you.
15:51Come on. Stay there.
16:02Why do you think I've stopped you?
16:04I was doing 70.
16:08I'll ask you again.
16:10Why do you think I've stopped you?
16:12Because of my manner of driving.
16:17How would you describe your manner of driving?
16:20Be honest.
16:22I think I went a little bit over the speed limit.
16:24A little bit over? How over?
16:27I think I was doing 70.
16:31You think you were doing 70?
16:33Or do you think you were probably doing a bit quicker than that?
16:36In about 80, 90 mile an hour?
16:39Really? I'm really sorry off the top.
16:44You've came off the slip.
16:46You've joined the carriageway.
16:47You didn't realise, and be honest, that I was in the other lane, did you?
16:51And I've watched your manner of driving.
16:53I didn't know.
16:55I don't mean to question your judgment, but I'm just dying for a toilet.
16:58I'm not feeling well today either.
17:01Dying for a toilet. I'm going to be sick.
17:03I'm really sorry.
17:05You're going to be sick probably because you're shocked the fact that you've been stopped by the police.
17:09No, honestly.
17:11Well, let's deal with it quite quickly then.
17:13I don't usually drive like that, I promise.
17:15Right. Okay.
17:17I'm going to do some checks on your vehicle to make sure it is all legit,
17:20and it's not stolen because you're driving around like Grand Theft Auto.
17:24I'm really sorry.
17:26Yeah, and I appreciate you're not well,
17:28but I've got to go to Fatals and stuff, and if people are driving like that, that's on me.
17:32No, I completely understand. I'm dying for a toilet.
17:35You just take a few minutes. Take a deep breath, alright?
17:40Tango 8902.
17:42Are you free for a quick vehicle check on the same way, please?
17:44I don't mean to be rude or anything, but...
17:47Two seconds.
17:49No reports on the PNC. The insurance has come out of health.
17:53I was just going to ask if we could do...
17:56Right. I'll get your details, mate, and I'll let you go.
17:58Yeah, I'm just dying.
18:00You're dying?
18:02I'm so ill. I'm never ill, but when I'm ill, it's bad.
18:05I eat anything. I had a chip at work.
18:08I'm having to go home. I don't feel...
18:11No, that's fair enough, and I get it.
18:12Fair enough, and I get it.
18:14Still, not an excuse to drive in that manner, mate, alright?
18:17Because if you didn't see me, and I'm in a marked-up police vehicle,
18:20and a motorbike came up there, you would have wiped them out, mate.
18:26Are you free for a person checking hash DL, please, on the driver?
18:29DL, substantive.
18:31Licensed at the moment. It's clean.
18:34The one in marker dated 25th July, 2023,
18:38when he was stopped after he was observed driving at a high speed
18:40and given a Section 59 warning.
18:44You were stopped last year for the same reason.
18:47Me?
18:49So you've already been observed in July last year driving...
18:52That was for the antisocial, because of how loud the car was.
18:55Within 12 months, you've been observed by the police
18:59either driving antisocially or in an antisocial manner.
19:02That was in July.
19:04So this is the second offence.
19:06With a Section 59 warning,
19:08if a driver commits another traffic offence within a year,
19:11the police can take action.
19:13Now we're seizing it under Section 165, the road traffic act.
19:16Is there any way we could just...
19:18Fine, I won't drive like that again. I'm really sorry.
19:21I know, but you've already been warned about similar behaviour just last year.
19:26Can I arrange a Section 59 uplift for them, please?
19:29Yes, yes.
19:31You're going to have to get someone to come and collect you.
19:34My dad will come.
19:36Right, OK.
19:39I'll let you out your side.
19:56He's fully admitted to careless driving.
19:59Hopefully, with his reaction there, he's going to learn from it.
20:04He said that he doesn't feel well and that's why he was speeding to get home,
20:06but to be honest, at that one point, was he going to be...
20:10Did he look like he was going to be sick?
20:12There was no sort of retching.
20:14He didn't look, you know, pale or anything like that,
20:17which would suggest that he was probably just making it up
20:20because he knew he was caught out.
20:23Unfortunately, we lied to the police.
20:25But it's not going to wash with me.
20:37I've got a challenge for you.
20:39Accepted.
20:41Well, first one of two.
20:43OK.
20:45Loser has to buy food.
20:47Come on, then.
20:49It's been nice knowing you.
20:51Yeah, we'll see.
20:53At Eitel Lane station, Northumbria's answer to the Harlem Globetrotters
20:57awarded the winner.
20:59I've got a challenge for you.
21:01Accepted.
21:03Well, first one of two.
21:04The Harlem Globetrotters are warming up for the night shift.
21:15See how nervous he got.
21:22One of the old pressures on.
21:27If I get this in, I win.
21:34That doesn't count.
21:36You've been practising.
21:38Stupid game anyway, isn't it?
21:41But on the road,
21:43PC's Jan Shimlisher and Jamie Leslie are on the same team.
21:48Oh, he's beating this.
21:50Someone's short.
21:52Not getting into the swamp.
21:57Always ready.
22:00We're on the way to save the deer.
22:04This emergency.
22:06There's literally just been a five car pileup on the A1.
22:10Not too far from the end of the North.
22:13It looked like a bus
22:15that's crashed into the back of a car,
22:17which has gone into the back of another car,
22:19into the back of another car.
22:21No, mate, I've passed that over to the officers.
22:25OK, it's time. We're 10-15.
22:27We're going to have a look.
22:29We're going to have a look.
22:31We're going to have a look.
22:33OK, it's time. We're 10-15. We're travelling.
22:40It's the grade 1 five vehicle RTC.
22:44Sounds a little bit greasy.
22:46Five cars with
22:49nowhere to go
22:51on the A1.
22:54I'll find out how many people are actually on the course.
22:57It looks quite full.
22:59This course is filled with 50 Newcastle fans
23:02heading down Aston Villa.
23:04All aboard.
23:08Coachload of Newcastle fans.
23:10Bit of a nightmare, this.
23:12See what reception we get.
23:16Hopefully they're not too drunk
23:18and don't give us too much grief
23:20for trying to sort them out, aye?
23:22I bet you don't want them in the road causing havoc, do you?
23:25Who wants a sunburned fan out?
23:26Well, I know you and me aren't,
23:28so hopefully that'll go down better.
23:31Try and get the carriageway re-opened.
23:33Because if there's not a bus full of injured people,
23:35then I'm happy. Aye.
23:39The thing is with this road here,
23:41it's the main arterial route.
23:43High traffic volume.
23:45That'll be a nightmare.
23:48I can see it.
23:50I can see it.
23:52You've got eyes on.
23:54Loads of flashy lights.
23:57E-I-E-I-E-I-O
24:00Up the trail, here we go.
24:03Honestly, what a nightmare.
24:16You never know what's coming round the bend on Britain's roads.
24:20F***ing hell.
24:22Bad drivers will sneak up on you.
24:24Oh, f***.
24:26With their twists,
24:28turns,
24:30and hair-raising near-misses.
24:34And just when you've seen the back of one...
24:37Jesus, f***.
24:39There's another, just around the corner.
24:42What are you doing?
24:48E-I-E-I-E-I-O
24:50Up the trail, here we go.
24:53Honestly, what a nightmare.
24:55On the A1,
24:57Jamie and Jan are at a multi-car crash,
25:00which is causing chaos on the main route out of Newcastle.
25:06Leaving a coachload of football fans stranded.
25:10It's just been a bit of a staggered collision, hasn't it,
25:13where cars driving quite close to each other
25:15and it's just had a bit of a domino effect.
25:16Five.
25:18One van, two cars, another van,
25:21and a bus full of Newcastle supporters.
25:24Up the trail, here we go.
25:26And we get to Europe.
25:28Absolute havoc.
25:30F*** you. That's all right.
25:32They've all been checked.
25:34Thankfully, they're not injured.
25:36But it's just we're in a really congested area, the A1,
25:40that we need to try and clear quite quickly.
25:43A couple of them are asking for help.
25:44A couple of them are asking for a little cigarette or something.
25:48And as much as I'd like to let them get off,
25:51it would just be an absolute nightmare.
25:53Where we are at the minute, it would just cause havoc.
25:56Shall we go and start some chants off on the bus?
26:01Hello?
26:03Just waiting for the bus to come.
26:06Terrible situation this for you is going down there,
26:09but I think we can raise the spirits a little bit with a bit of a chant.
26:11So, I think on the count of three.
26:15Right.
26:17One, two, three.
26:19E-I-E-I-O.
26:21Le Premier League, here we go.
26:24When we get to Europe, this is what we sing.
26:27We're the Tordis, super Tordis, in the middle of the sea.
26:30There you go.
26:32This is what we sing.
26:34We're the Tordis, super Tordis, in the middle of the sea.
26:37Right.
26:38Hopefully we'll get you on your way soon, alright?
26:41E-I-E-I-O.
26:43You've got to get them and keep them in the spirit, haven't you?
26:46When you need an excitable puppy to lift the mood,
26:50you're the man.
26:52We're hoping that we can get them off of that one
26:55and into the new one within about five minutes.
26:59Is that our bus, is it?
27:01Enjoy the Marta.
27:03Enjoy the Marta!
27:05Come on!
27:07Still got some smiling faces, that's important.
27:09Oh, yeah, we're gone.
27:11What we're thinking of the score?
27:13Two-nil.
27:15Two-nil.
27:18There we go.
27:20Jobs are good now.
27:22Just let these lads get a few more cars off
27:25and then get it reopened.
27:26Hopefully we'll get the win tonight and celebrate three points.
27:49Look at Dave go, look at that all.
27:52You don't lose.
27:53Oh, look at that all.
27:55You don't learn that.
27:57That's a proper traffic cop, look at that.
27:59Doing brilliant.
28:01Can I teach that? Can I teach it?
28:12Being single-crewed doesn't actually bother us whatsoever.
28:16I do enjoy just my own company.
28:19In Gateshead,
28:20Mary-Anne is no stranger to being a lone ranger.
28:25Even at home, I go out on my own for food and everything, I love it.
28:30So, yeah, riding solo, well, I would say driving solo.
28:34I think my aim today is be as proactive as possible.
28:37I mean, you come on a department like this
28:40and you've got to sort of prove yourself really
28:43because you're going on to a specialist department.
28:45So, I want to prove myself.
28:47That's my aim today.
28:48Proper, proper policing.
28:56Oh, well, have a look at this.
28:58How scruffy that is.
29:00Tango 890, tell me.
29:02Vehicle check, please, Red Hoof Bridge.
29:04Go ahead.
29:06Thank you, Kilo Papa Juliet Della Zulu on an Astra.
29:11We're getting no trees on that.
29:14It's absolutely disgusting, the car.
29:16And it's that bad that it's really hard to work out the registration.
29:22So, I might just stop and see if he gives me some advice
29:25to get his car clean more than anything.
29:29He's pulling in, excellent.
29:38Hello.
29:40What was this for?
29:42What have I pulled you for?
29:43I don't know.
29:45I didn't say you have.
29:47I'll tell you exactly what I followed you for, right?
29:49I couldn't work out your registration
29:51because it was just mucky, that was all.
29:53I'll do you a favour.
29:55Stay there.
30:00It's nice and clean.
30:02Oh, that's made a smile on your face, look at that.
30:05Now you're glad you've been stopped, aren't you?
30:07I was only going to give him some advice.
30:09Wash your reg a little bit at the back
30:11because I couldn't read what it was.
30:14Well, this is what we're doing.
30:16This is called problem solving.
30:19I think, you know when you look after your car?
30:22I think it just shows how you would look after yourself.
30:25You've got a nice clean car, it's clean inside.
30:28You've got a clean head.
30:30That's it.
30:32I clean my car once a week, actually.
30:34Ha-ha!
30:36I clean my car once a week.
30:38I clean my car once a week.
30:40I clean my car once a week.
30:41Ha-ha!
30:57He's going over my lane.
31:07This car was weaving over the lines
31:08and he's nearly ended up going into the side of us.
31:13When I've went past, it looks like he's asleep at the wheel.
31:16He looked like he was dead, didn't he?
31:18He's not because he's put the sun visor down.
31:21He looked like he was asleep.
31:23I was like, is he winding me?
31:28He's all over the road.
31:34He can't drive, I'm telling you now, he can't drive.
31:39I don't know if he just doesn't know how to drive.
31:50Let's try and see if we can get him stopped.
32:04He's not reacting to the blue lights when I've tried to pull him over.
32:08He's not reacting to the blue lights when I've tried to pull him over.
32:14Location?
32:16A1 northbound, I'm not at the train.
32:19I've tried to go through the compliance, but it's ignored us.
32:27Taking the slip for junction 78.
32:32The driver has put his foot down and disappeared up the slip road.
32:39I can see him in the distance.
32:49Stop there.
32:54Stop there, stop there.
32:56Turn your engine off.
32:58He's just stopped at red ATS, so I've just jumped out of the car and took the keys off him for now.
33:03I've put my blue lights on, signalling to come off, to stop.
33:06You just continue straight on.
33:08As far as I was concerned, you pulled me over at A location.
33:13You put the lights on, and that's the junction to turn off of the A68I.
33:16I thought, well, that's just dangerous, so I'm now going to have to go across things.
33:19I carried on, and I slowed down into the inside lane, and you turned your light off.
33:23Yeah, because...
33:24It's just a, you know, whatever, I don't know.
33:26I turned my blue lights off because it was technically classed as fail to stop for police.
33:31I'll tell you exactly what I followed you for.
33:33Your lane discipline, you nearly went over my side of the lane, because you were on the white lines.
33:37Yeah.
33:38And I'm in lane two, so you crossed mine ever so slightly, and I thought you were going to collide into us.
33:43The only reason it was that was because I was actually checking the speed limit, because if he was sitting there,
33:47he was sitting on butt, and I just thought, oh, okay, let me have a look at that, and it was just, that was all it was.
33:51Yeah.
33:52I didn't know where you were.
33:53So you've been distracted at the wheel by your speedometer, essentially.
33:55Yeah, yeah.
33:57But then when I've watched you, you've been manoeuvring side to side.
34:00But then when I've watched you, you've been manoeuvring side to side, and I thought, are you asleep?
34:04I was just getting styling orders, that's all it was.
34:06Okay.
34:09It's easy, he was distracted by his speedometer.
34:12Just poor driving, isn't it?
34:14Silly, silly, silly.
34:30I'm going to do, quickly, just because of your lane discipline, I'll do a quick eyesight test with you.
34:36I know on your restriction on your DVLE, you've got to wear glasses, haven't you?
34:39Yes.
34:41I'm just going to ask you to read a registration plate from 20 metres away, with your glasses on.
34:45Just read the registration plate of the last one, please.
34:47The furthest one.
34:49Lovely, thank you very much.
34:53Right, there's your keys back.
34:54You know, when I went past and I had a look at you, I thought you were asleep.
34:57I was like, oh, having a medical episode?
35:00Hopefully not.
35:01No.
35:02Alright.
35:03Just be more mindful on your freight leave, once it's safe to do so, obviously.
35:18Some people's driving is quite questionable.
35:20When the police get behind you, you do expect a little bit of a change in behaviour, but that was just consistent.
35:26So, yeah, very, very, very poor driving.
35:30Super words of advice, and hopefully he learns his lesson.
35:50So, this is about making sure that I've found the best kit we can, for the cheapest price.
35:57People think this stuff just magically appears in the back of police cars, it magically disappears, but that's the problem.
36:03At Eaton Lane Police Station in Newcastle, Sergeant Dave Roberts is undergoing some essential retail therapy.
36:11I never realised that you could spend six hours examining the different properties of a traffic cone.
36:16The Pro-Cone 500's high-intensity cone sleeve gives superb night-time brightness.
36:22Brilliant.
36:23Right, that's the cone chosen.
36:25It's time to go out and play.
36:32Right, off we go.
36:34Let's go.
36:44Being a motorway cop was always the perfect job for Dave.
36:49I am a petrol head. I do like cars, motorbikes, yeah.
36:55Favourite TV cop? Probably Magnum PI, really, just because of the Ferrari.
37:01And then it would have to be very closely followed by a Miami Vice.
37:04Cops with fast cars, they always seem to be linked.
37:16Northumbria Police, how can I help?
37:18There's been a collision with a cyclist and a car.
37:22The car is blocking the road, it's rolled over.
37:25Cop's a cyclist with a head injury.
37:31Are you able to start travelling now? It's a great one.
37:34It's a report of an RTC with a cyclist.
37:37Five for one, I'll travel.
37:41So we've just had a report of a pedal cyclist RTC involving another vehicle.
37:47It's just outside one of the rural villages.
37:52No information about levels of injury, but anything involving a pedal cyclist is of concern,
37:57because of that potential of injury.
38:02Almost 100 cyclists a week are involved in serious collisions on our roads.
38:12And nearly half of all cyclist fatalities involve a car.
38:17Shockingly, they're almost twice as likely to be injured on rural roads than in urban areas.
38:25Fortunately for this cyclist, a passing ambulance was on hand.
38:29Ah, I've just been hit by an arty.
38:33And when this commuting cyclist in Sheffield came face to face with a motorist,
38:39they were thrown off their bike.
38:43Thankfully, only suffering minor injuries.
38:48There's been a collision with a cyclist and a car.
38:52The car is blocking the road, it's rolled over.
38:56On the A1 outside of Newcastle, Dave is racing to a crash between a car and a cyclist.
39:03I'm just pulled up at scene now. The cyclist has lost injuries.
39:07So there's an officer at scene.
39:10First priority for me is always making sure that if people are in need, a first aid that it's given.
39:17And the quicker we get there, the more likely we are to see what it looks like.
39:21If that's not a factor, then the quicker we're there, the better in relation to observing the scene.
39:37Here we go.
39:39There's an ambulance there. Air ambulance is landing shortly.
39:50That's a lot of damage.
40:03It's a comedy of errors on Britain's roads.
40:11Drivers making only fools and horses of one another.
40:16Bloody hell!
40:18Hidey-hi with not-so-happy campers.
40:22It's clear that some mothers really do have them.
40:34Hello, sir.
40:37Right.
40:4053.
40:42In rural Northumberland, Dave is at a serious crash on a country road.
40:47Walk me through the scene.
40:48Yeah, no worries.
40:49Involving a cyclist and a car.
40:52He was there speaking and talking, and I seem conscious.
40:55Yeah, yeah, yeah.
40:56But he is getting checked all out at the minute.
40:58Right. Bye.
41:02I'll just give you an update from the RTC if I can.
41:04Right.
41:05The pedal cyclist is in the back of the ambulance being treated at the minute.
41:09Some form of unknown head injury.
41:11That's understood.
41:13We've been speaking to the driver of the car.
41:17He's an 18-year-old young man.
41:19He doesn't require an ambulance.
41:21That could have been a serious head injury for him, never mind anything else.
41:24I was very lucky to have walked away.
41:27It's bad, but it could have been a lot worse.
41:29The driver involved in the collision has been taken home.
41:33While the cyclist receives medical attention, Dave speaks to witnesses.
41:38You saw the collision, sir, did you?
41:40What happened?
41:41Well, there was a cyclist in a white car.
41:44The white car was trying to overtake it, but then saw me coming over the brow.
41:47OK.
41:48And he's broke and veered in, but he veered up to such a degree
41:51that he's hit the sideburn, which has flipped the car.
41:54The roof of the car has hit the gentleman,
41:56and I thought it would actually, to be honest,
41:58it actually took him and swished him.
42:02His legs were mangled around the bike.
42:04I managed to put him in a recovery position,
42:06and then, thankfully, this gentleman, Ben, who said I'm a doctor,
42:09has come round.
42:11Did you give some treatment, did you?
42:13I just put a towel on his face because he was bleeding from his nose.
42:17He's confused, so he's probably got a head injury,
42:20and he's going home.
42:21He's confused, so he's probably got a head injury,
42:23and he's got some tenderness over the left side of his chest,
42:26and he was complaining a little bit of difficulty of breathing,
42:28so there might be some broken ribs, possibly a puncture of his lung
42:31or some bleeding into his chest, but I'm not sure about that.
42:34Right, OK.
42:37The bike rider, he's got some sort of head injury.
42:41It's not clear how bad that is just yet.
42:43Now that he's away at the hospital, effectively,
42:46we've got what we need from the scene, measurements, photographs,
42:49accounts, all those that are involved.
42:51It's a case of now clearing this up and getting the road open again, really.
43:20That car basically landed on top of the cyclist.
43:23That could have been a fatality, and thankfully it wasn't.
43:29There's a very fine line between no injury, serious injury and death,
43:36and I'm hoping that the cyclist will make a decent recovery.
43:40In terms of that driver of that car, young guy,
43:44not much experience at the wheel,
43:47and he's ended up making a very poor decision about when to overtake the bike
43:52and even poorer decision about how to avoid what he perceived to be a potential collision,
43:57and he's ended up injuring that person.
43:59I've not lost sight on the fact that actually he's been through something traumatic as well,
44:03but the reality is that we're prosecuting him for the offence, and rightly so,
44:08because I've got a job to do around road safety,
44:11and I'm hoping that he learns from that.
44:18If you have any dashcam clips you think could feature in the next series of Motorway Cops,
44:23catching Britain's speeders, send them, along with your contact details,
44:27to contact us at purpleproductions.co.uk
44:47Thanks for watching!
