00:00Datuk Siri Anwar Ibrahim has agreed to reopen the investigation into Teo Benghok's death,
00:07which has sparked nationwide intrigue over the past 15 years.
00:12In a Facebook post on Thursday, the Prime Minister stated that the new investigation
00:16would be conducted independently.
00:18In July 2011, a Royal Commission of Inquiry concluded that Benghok's death was a suicide.
00:25However, in September 2014, the Court of Appeal ruled that his death resulted from multiple
00:31injuries sustained in a fall from the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission, MACC office, caused
00:38by, an unlawful act or acts by person or persons unknown, including MACC officers involved
00:45in the case.
00:47Anwar also mentioned meeting with Benghok's family, Father Teo Leong Hui, Mother Teng
00:53Shu Hui, Sister Teo Leelan, and son Teo Erjia at Perdana Putra on Thursday.
01:00He listened to their concerns and requests, acknowledging their long struggle for justice
01:05and the emotional toll it has taken.
01:08The Prime Minister had earlier met with Benghok's family, their lawyer Ramkarpal Singh and Digital
01:14Minister Gobind Singh Deo at 3pm in a 30-minute meeting.
01:18Afterward, Ramkarpal told reporters that Anwar would soon raise the matter with Inspector
01:24General of Police Tan Sri Razaruddin Hussain.
01:27Meanwhile, Leelan said during the meeting, she had conveyed her frustrations to Anwar
01:32about the delays in the investigation.
02:19She recalled Anwar's presence at a 2009 gathering at Plaza Masalam, Shah Alam, demanding justice
02:38for Benghok and his attendance at Benghok's funeral.
02:42Leelan proposed that international experts assist in the police investigation.
02:47Anwar responded that it would be up to the police to decide.
02:50On July 16, 2009, Benghok was detained overnight for questioning on the 14th floor of the MACC
02:58office in Shah Alam, and was later found dead on the building's fifth floor.
03:03In May 2015, the government agreed to pay Benghok's family 600,000 ringgit to settle
03:09a civil suit filed in 2012 for negligence resulting in his death.
03:14In January 2022, Benghok's parents filed for a judicial review to compel the police
03:20to complete the investigation into his death.
03:23Last month, the High Court set October 29 to deliver its ruling on a judicial review
03:28brought by Benghok's family against the police.
