00:00Hello everyone, and welcome back to Storyline Unpacked.
00:02In today's episode, we delve into the gripping survival thriller, Aaru Jeevitam, also known
00:08as The Coat Life.
00:10This film is not just a work of fiction, it is based on true events, and inspired by real
00:16people.
00:17So make sure you stick around until the end, as we'll be sharing some fascinating facts
00:22and real-life incidents that influenced this incredible story.
00:27So without further ado, let's get into it.
00:40Our story begins in the bustling airport of Saudi Arabia, where two Malayalee men from
00:45India, Najeeb and Hakeem, arrive with the dream of a better life.
00:51They had been promised jobs by a company, but upon landing, they find themselves stranded
00:57with no one there to pick them up.
00:59This initial confusion sets tone for a journey filled with unforeseen challenges.
01:05Unable to speak Arabic, and only knowing little Hindi, Najeeb and Hakeem struggle to communicate.
01:12They meet a fellow Malayalee, who helps them try to contact the company.
01:15But it's a Friday, a day when all the businesses are typically closed in Saudi Arabia.
01:22As the hours pass, they see other international workers being picked up, but no one comes
01:27for them, and their situation becomes increasingly desperate.
01:32Around night time, they were approached by an Arab man, whom we refer as Kafil Junior.
01:38In Arabic, Kafil means sponsor, owner or master.
01:44Najeeb and Hakeem mistakenly believe he is from the company they were supposed to work
01:49for, and follows him.
01:51However, they soon realize that something is terribly wrong.
01:55Kafil Junior drives them away, not in the air-conditioned bus they were promised, but
02:02in the back of a pickup truck.
02:05Their unease grows as they are driven into a desert area.
02:10In a shocking turn of events, Kafil Junior sells Hakeem to another Arab man, and later
02:16does the same with Najeeb.
02:18The men are separated, and Najeeb finds himself alone, unable to communicate with anyone around
02:23him.
02:24He is left with no choice but to sleep in Kafil's tent as the night gets cold in the
02:29desert.
02:30Here, we are given a glimpse into Najeeb's past in India.
02:34He used to work extracting sand from a river, and decides to go to Saudi Arabia after hearing
02:40about the lucrative opportunities there.
02:43To afford the journey, he mortgaged his wife's jewelry, hoping to improve their financial
02:49situation.
02:51Back in the present, Najeeb's ordeal worsens.
02:54He meets an old man who speaks a little Hindi and works for Kafil, herding sheep and milking
02:59goats.
03:00The old man teaches Najeeb how to milk the goats, but Najeeb drinks the milk himself,
03:06not understanding the instructions.
03:08This results in scolding and mistreatment.
03:11Najeeb's new reality is harsh.
03:14He is forced to eat thick bread dipping in water and sleep in open air, exposed to the
03:21harshness of desert.
03:23Najeeb soon learns that escape is not an option.
03:27The nearest road is far, far away, and the old man, who has been there for years, doesn't
03:33even remember his own name.
03:35Najeeb becomes increasingly despotent, thinking about his pregnant wife and the future he
03:42had hoped for.
03:44His thoughts frequently drift back to his life in India, where he had enjoyed simple
03:49pleasures like bathing in the river.
03:53The Arab Kafil is cruel and abusive, often hitting Najeeb and treating him worse than
03:58the animals he tends.
04:00At one point, Najeeb even contemplates suicide.
04:03It is deterred when he stumbles upon the remains of the old man, now just bones, likely the
04:10victim of the harsh conditions, or Kafil's wrath.
04:14His grim discovery underscores the brutality of his situation.
04:19Despite the dire circumstances, Najeeb clings to hope.
04:23One day, while tending the sheep, he hears a familiar tune and discovers Hakeem is nearby.
04:29Both are overjoyed to see each other, but their happiness is short-lived as Hakeem's
04:34Kafil soon arrives and takes him away.
04:37Before leaving, Hakeem advises Najeeb to escape with him and another man named Ibrahim Khadri,
04:45who has been planning their escape.
04:48Ibrahim, who is an African man also trapped in servitude, has a plan to escape during
04:54an upcoming wedding feast, when most of the guards will be distracted.
04:59Najeeb, Hakeem and Ibrahim seize the opportunity and set off into the desert.
05:05However, their journey is fraught with danger.
05:08They encounter harsh weather, phenomenal snakes and the ever-present threat of dehydration.
05:15Hakeem's condition deteriorates rapidly.
05:18He becomes delirious, experiencing mirages and eventually scumps to his circumstances,
05:26vomiting blood and dying in the desert.
05:30Ibrahim and Najeeb press on, but the journey is taking its toll.
05:34Ibrahim gives his shoes, sacrificing his own comfort to help his friend.
05:40They finally find water, a moment of salvation, but their trials are far from over.
05:46As they continue their journey, Najeeb realizes they are hopelessly lost.
05:52Ibrahim disappears one morning, leaving behind a water bottle for Najeeb.
05:57Alone and desperate, Najeeb struggles to keep moving.
06:01Just as he reaches the brink of exhaustion, he finds road.
06:05A Rolls Royce stops, and a kind Sheikh takes him to the city.
06:11This marks the end of Najeeb's nightmarish ordeal.
06:15In the city, Najeeb meets a Malayali man named Kunjika, who helps him contact his family
06:21and takes care of him.
06:23It's an emotional moment when Najeeb learns that four years have passed since he left
06:28India, and he now has a son.
06:32The emotional weight of this revelation is overwhelming.
06:37Najeeb's troubles aren't over yet.
06:39Without documents, he is detained in jail for a runaway worker.
06:44Here he learns that Kafeel Jr. was a slave broker who exploited their lack of language
06:50skills and knowledge to trap them.
06:54Unfortunately, Kafeel Jr. has no legal right to claim Najeeb, as he was never officially
07:01registered under him.
07:03Najeeb is eventually deported back to India, bringing his harrowing journey to close.
07:10The Goat Life is a powerful tale of survival and resilience, highlighting the dangers faced
07:15by migrant workers who seek better opportunities abroad.
07:19The film is based on the best-selling 2008 Malayalam novel of the same name, which itself
07:26is inspired by the real-life experiences of Najeeb.
07:30His story serves as a stark reminder of the dangers of trusting, unverified job offers
07:37and the harsh realities of life as an undocumented worker in foreign lands.
07:44As we wrap up this episode, remember that every journey comes with its own risks and
07:49rewards.
07:50Najeeb's story is a testament to the human spirit's resilience in the face of unimaginable
07:55adversity.
