00:24and Brad Pauls for the British middleweight title a title with a noble history and these two

00:40i've been really looking forward to this champion has there been richie i know it's difficult for
00:44each of us to hear the other right now the noise is off the chart frankly but here we go and no
00:49prouder british champion could there be than Nathan Heaney but Paul's came close last time
00:57can he pick up and go again and develop from what we saw the last time absolutely Paul i think i
01:03mean both boxers here have got different agendas haven't they for Nathan Heaney he's got to carry
01:09on what he did in those first six or seven rounds in the first contest see if he can carry that on
01:14later on to the into the contest and for Brad Paul's he's got to try and do exactly the same
01:22he did in the sort of second half of the contest he's got to pick up this round now how he left
01:28off in that last in that last contest and you have to remember he'd never been passed he'd never done
01:33a 12 rounder before in his last contest so he may have just been hanging back a little bit so
01:40can he now just up the pace and he's got to make sure he doesn't lose
01:44um a few of these early rounds for that's what would be on that's what would be on my mind
01:48if i was Brad Paul i was in that corner he's got to make sure he wins a couple
01:52of these early rounds and then try and replicate what he did late on in the first contest
01:56Heaney clung on to the crown last time boxed beautifully in spells early on
02:08every sign that the improvement that we have seen in Nathan Heaney Jack Flatley second fight and
02:14particularly Denzel Bentley it seemed set to continue against Paul's and then it all started
02:20to turn around particularly rounds eight and eleven that stay in the memory and Heaney was
02:26in great peril as Paul produced the best of his career when he counted the most good work
02:34from Heaney it was a lovely right uppercut that went in it caught Paul's flush good shot indeed
02:40all set up through straight punches and that's what his strength was in that last contest for
02:44those first six or seven rounds he kept it nice and long kept his distance then he drifted i think
02:50mentally he got a little bit tired and allowed Brad Paul's to get close to him and that's when
02:55Brad Paul's came on strong so he's got to keep the concentration levels very high

04:22up from behind that jab managed to keep his distance i think fairly well did Heaney and
04:27brought him onto that little mid-range uppercut good round for Heaney to start off as brought out
04:33by the punch stats from Jabba in the opening round but the puncher in this fight we believe
04:40is Brad Paul's trying to open up a little bit toward the closing 30 seconds of that first round
04:49we heard Steve Woodvine in the corner would find such a huge part of the Nathan Heaney
04:54story Richie it's all on the job for their man tonight isn't it well he just gave him a great
04:59bit of advice in that corner he said don't get too greedy and what he means by that if you're
05:04having success with that jab and that long straight right hand keep doing what you're doing why close
05:09the gap down and try and take him on it's short and mid-range that's when Brad Paul's will be
05:13brought into it so i fully understand the instruction there and it was good coaching

05:25Paul's proved so much by the way he came back in the second half of the fight

05:35and what Brad Paul has got to do here Paul is basically when Heaney's throwing that jab if
05:40it's if it's if it's repetitive it's just the single jab single jab he's got to time his right
05:45hand counter or a right hand over the top a counter-attacking move where you beat Heaney
05:50to the punch you slip to your left and you whip the right hand over so Heaney's got to vary his
05:56jab the pace of it the power of it also doubling up occasionally if it's repetitive just a single
06:02shot don't be surprised if Brad Paul has success with that right hand counter nonetheless Richie
06:08for me in the early stages it looks to me like Heaney has really thought about it and learned
06:13from what went wrong in the second half of that fight because Paul's is having to reach for a lot
06:17of these shots he is and Heaney's controlling the pace and he's controlling the distance
06:23what Paul is he's going back into it and this is what the similar to the first contest his
06:29feet are too slow Paul he's got to quicken these feet up he's a sitting target got to move his head
06:35but he's got to be a faster pace with his with his feet Brad Paul's it's a bit like similar to
06:40the first contest the first six or seven rounds that's better for him
06:49nice and sharp nonetheless when he does get Heaney in range pause
06:56Heaney will have to be very wary indeed for every second of this
07:02so what to know this is another Heaney round no question he's dominated with his jab and the
07:07straight right hand and I think that's literally because Paul's feet are too slow he's a sitting
07:12target at this stage he's got to change things go through the gears a little bit more here
07:23it's smart stuff this from Heaney early on it doesn't mean he's going to win it
07:28but it might mean he's boxing into a lead again

08:18but here we are living it with Heaney and Paul's tonight in Birmingham it's very special indeed
08:25and this second fight seems to be picking up from where we left off first time round
08:30with one or two subtle changes for me Heaney seems in the early stages to be a little bit more
08:38measured and he's keeping the space very effectively that seems to be the game plan
08:43and in the Paul's corner at the end of the second round Richie it was Terry Stewart saying to his
08:49look we need to engage a bit more and a bit more quickly yeah and he does so at the start of this
08:55round yeah I totally agree with his corner there like I said he's got a quick in the feet up a
09:01little bit more to get him into range certainly use that double jab and try and time that counter
09:05like I said with the right hand over the top but at distance Heaney seems to be in control
09:11so he's got so what Paul's got he's got a more move move more into mid-range but that's going
09:16to take head movement fast feet in and let's remember as a matter of record the British
09:24champion is Heaney Paul's has got to take it off him yeah absolutely so it's a similar pattern to
09:31the first contest and like I've said Brad Paul's will be what he should be doing he's trying to
09:36win a few of these early earlier rounds because he let it slip and he let Heaney get too far ahead
09:42in my opinion in that first fight
09:46nonetheless nobody's prepared to write Paul's off it's an amazing upturn in his career over
09:51the last two years or slightly less than that actually coming to this with confidence but
09:56there is no doubting at all the confidence in the way Heaney is going about this so far very
10:00impressive for me yeah and listening to his corner like he said don't get too greedy and
10:05that's what he did there landed a couple of shots and then got back out on the outside again
10:09to start to get all over again
10:15Brad Paul's landing the odd single shot here and there but that's all they are Richie single
10:19shot and he's not getting into his rhythm is he no and he's generally on the outside and
10:22moving backwards most of the time so Heaney coming forward with that long straight jab
10:29and straight right hand yeah he's controlling things here and especially the face I thought
10:34I saw Paul's mouth come and fight and Heaney is not falling into the trap doesn't need to Paul
10:41because they're boxing with the moments at long range and that's what he's got to concentrate
10:45on doing and Paul has got to find a way to get to him maybe like you've said slip in the shots
10:52to land the hooks the natural advantage with reach is with Heaney and he's making it pay
10:59in the early stages of this rematch
11:04one or two power shots landing from Heaney and half the crowd fears that there might be
11:08a big power shot coming back the other way from Paul's but it doesn't eventuate
11:12and Heaney looks to be bossing this round again
11:17and there's Paul's reaching and he's not finding Richie
11:23launching in is a little bit too far out there that's why the head movement this is a little
11:28bit better that's what he's got to do pick it up

12:22yeah I've got Heaney in front three rounds he's controlled things
12:27Paul's started to show what he should be doing towards the end of the round but nevertheless
12:31Heaney for me in the opening three and while you were away Steve Woodvine in the Heaney corner said
12:40you can control this with the jab you can do it for 50 rounds it's the difference maker in this
12:46fight so far the only thing he's got to watch out for here Paul he's just drifting a little
12:52bit too much to the left after he throws the jab he just moves to the left there you see so
12:57you know he's being set up really for the right hand over the top it's all about timing from
13:01Paul's and getting close enough to trigger that jab and then whip that right hand over
13:06so Heaney occasionally he's got to move off to his right just occasionally just a very easy movement
13:28Paul thought about it but he couldn't go through with it then and Heaney was waiting for him he's
13:32setting the traps time after time and Paul's is falling into them he is indeed far too slow with
13:39defeat gets caught together with another good right hand from Heaney got to be a tempo change
13:44from Paul's we know he's dangerous if he gets up close but he's got to start doing it again
13:50these rounds are just slipping away from him and they could prove crucial at the end of this one
13:55maybe the mindset from Paul's and I'm not saying from his corner incidentally because they wanted
14:07to get on with it but it screams at me at the moment that Paul's is saying to himself
14:11I caught him and I hurt him last time and I will do sooner or later again
14:15yes again he's been outworked here it's just the occasional odd shot here and there from Paul's
14:31for me Nathan Heaney's controlling the pace and distance with the jump
14:39the problem for Paul's is that Heaney might be over the hills and far away on the way back
14:44with all the titles intact and remember this WBA continental title as well as the
14:51famed British title and it comes for us
15:02is on the seat of his pants he's up but Paul's comes to life well there you go that right hand
15:09from Paul's he said how dangerous he can be if he gets into the right position and there
15:15it was a perfect shot from Brad Paul's it took until the eighth round first time
15:23here we are in the fourth and the brass big shift and it's in favor of Paul's
15:31Heaney took it well but the opening phase is now over

15:55let's have a look at this shot here Paul so it's a fairly slow jab isn't it we spoke about this
16:02what a cracking right hand counter that was bang on the button
16:06laps in concentration most certainly from Heaney it's a slow jab and Paul's come back
16:11with a super punch great shot okay and you're late in the minute because you stopped jabbing
16:17i've been giving that round anyway now we've lost his feet come on concentration Paul
16:24that's what it's all about for both boxers here concentration
16:29it's bubbling and it's boiling again boiling point in this Birmingham arena
16:37in the ring and outside of it
16:45well you can see the confidence now in Brad Paul's it's a totally
16:48different boxer indeed the way he's coming forward and taking it to Heaney
16:54Heaney's got to concentrate on those jabs but can he keep Brad Paul's at bay
16:59now the head movement you see he's just teeing him up for the right and over top you can see
17:03it coming when he's moving his head there he's just trying to trigger the jab of his opponent
17:08and then he comes back with the right hand he's confident now Brad Paul's he really is and he's
17:13getting a bit closer the doubts are creeping into the mind of Nathan Heaney as well as he took the
17:20shot but it's a proper equalizer when it lands Richie isn't it it's a cracking shot especially
17:27if your opponent's coming forward they're just leaning over his front foot like I say a lapsing
17:34concentration the slow jab and Brad Paul's he's capitalized on that mistake and he's producing

17:47Paul's doesn't want to give ground crabbing forward
17:53Heaney's rhythm is disturbed there are certainly question marks forming in Nathan Heaney's mind
17:58at the moment and he grabs and he claims and he tries to walk Paul's over into the Heaney corner
18:04I'd like to see that again Paul was that a left hook to the body from our position it certainly
18:08looked like it and he just fell forward and grabbed Brad Paul's but this is better work
18:14from the challenger here Heaney seemed to wobble again to me Richie the crisis later in the first
18:21fight this is shaping to be a crisis point after only five rounds for the champion can't get his
18:27rhythm in this round can't seem to keep his man at bay but there's a sort of a real confidence
18:37confident look about Brad Paul's work the way he's coming forward now
18:41it's as if he's waiting for the jab to come and he's waiting either for the right hand
18:45or he launches the left hook downstairs
18:50better combination from Heaney which sets his crowd alight
19:08Paul smiles even as the big left hook telegraphed right to the back of the hall missed the target
19:16it's a dodgy punch to try and land that left hook leading with the left hook if you miss then
19:21you're out of position and you can get caught which he did just got away with it really

20:21landing Nathan Heaney on the deck a 10-8 round in the fourth and Richie you've given
20:26the fifth to Paul's also I see yes he's got himself back into it there's a look over there
20:31but much more confidence in his work now Paul and yeah I think he had the better of it in the
20:37last round Brad Paul's Heaney the unbeaten champion is going to have to win this the hard way
20:45Paul's has got the crowd against him and that might be the understatement of the year
20:50indeed he's got the career profile against him but he is an improver clearly
20:57and he is brim full of confidence at the moment that this is going to be his night
21:02I think he realized Brad Paul's that you know his feet were too slow
21:07he lost the first two or three rounds he clearly had to change things and he has done the feet
21:12have got quicker he's got closer up to Nathan Heaney and he scored with over the last couple
21:17rounds with the better quality shots and the beauty of the fight for the new two which is
21:22that they never have much trouble fighting each other do they these two stylistically we've got
21:27a bit of height advantage for Heaney bit of a reach advantage which he made pay early on
21:31but Paul's with the power and the belief that he can land and he started to do it
21:35more and more often in the middle part of this British title fight
21:45and what a job these two are doing living up to the greatest traditions of this famous belt
21:53so

22:37fitness got him through the first fight for me when he was under pressure
22:41but it's been called into question much earlier second time there was a good way down from Heaney
22:47and he needs every moment of success he can get at this stage what a battle this is
22:57certainly started earlier hasn't it in this contest than it did the first one
23:02where Milton Heaney seemed to consult him for the first half of the fight but now Brad Paul's
23:06Paul Heaney with a couple of really good shots got a 10-8 round in there as well yeah
23:16this is really good really good stuff from Paul's it's his moment isn't it as well as
23:21the power that he's producing Paul's suddenly it clicked after about three rounds
23:28big change in the plot halfway

24:03you've got to start to put him under pressure now yeah let's go through the gears a little bit

24:13every time you want to be straight you catch him don't start don't start by a new
24:26big fight stats provided punch stats from Jabua they tell a story of Paul's power
24:33quite honestly i couldn't hear much of what was said in that corner between Terry Stewart and
24:39Paul's i will apologize if there was any offensive language in there but i got the idea that they
24:45believe that Paul's could take over if he can keep on stepping in to his man
24:52Paul's has just got to try and avoid shots as he's coming forward for a little bit more head movement
24:57there's a nice little lay back there to him as he's coming forward it's not too bad but it's just
25:03timing the right hand counter over the top but also he's had some success with that left hook to
25:07the body when he's up close but like you said about he needs all about the straight straight
25:14left left jab and straight right hand there it is there and keeping his distance at all times that's
25:20what he's got to do but it's not the authoritative jab in the opening three rounds that's the problem for Heaney
25:30and what if he should veer off course in terms of the tactic Richard
25:33and go and try to exchange at closer quarters what then well i would i think that that would
25:39be a wrong move for Heaney and we know you know he's a true champion he wears his heart on his
25:44sleeve but if he stands toe-to-toe that really brings Brad Paul into the contest Paul's struggling
25:50when he's at distance look at that behind that jab but as soon as he gets in close
25:55then the you know everything turns to Brad Paul seems to be having much more success on the inside
26:15there's hardly been a dull moment over the two fights so far
26:19but there is a prospect that this rivalry is going to stand the test of time in this famous division
26:26takes two to bring up the best in a champion Paul's is providing that Heaney is under all
26:33kinds of pressure but as Richie says he has the champion's mentality and certainly the champion's
26:38heart this has been an incredible round because for most of the round Heaney's controlled at a
26:44distance but the eye-catching work is definitely from Paul's there was an example of that Heaney
26:49just took his eye off the ball for a split second Brad Paul's gets close he comes low he comes in
26:55with the hooks over the top and they're the eye-catching shots that may just swing the judges
27:00tracking contest
27:03then a watching brief only for Michael Alexander the very experienced referee and I know he'll be
27:09enjoying every second of being involved in a big fight like this he wasn't really even
27:13needed when Heaney went over was he but it is flowed the styles have gone together
27:22as per the first fight to make it a thriller for the crowd here in Birmingham tonight
27:29so some good work from both boxers here Brad Paul's cracking shot through the middle there
27:44from him catches Heaney with another one there so some good work Heaney slow jab and gets caught
27:52down with a fast counter from Brad Paul's who poured on the pressure and like I say probably
27:58caught the judges eyes with those attacks
28:02uh
28:23there's still a long way to go in this fight but the stuff we are able to hear in the corner
28:28it's all in there
28:32they're already looking to their men to produce one last effort we're only in the eighth round
28:38they know how tight it is and they know how demanding
28:41it is both fighters are living up to the occasion
28:47it's just like the last fight it's very close some of these rounds close rounds every everyone
28:54on it's what impresses the judges
29:01if it goes on like this there's a few years ago Jason Welborn and Tommy Langford
29:05two tremendous matches for the British middleweight title
29:12this one is uh perhaps in the same conversation
29:15going back maybe what 30 odd years further back the great three meetings between Alan Minter and
29:25Kevin Finnegan
29:34there's some great champions as the Herald Grey and Tony Simpson moving back to Randolph
29:39Turpin and Terry Demings in the 50s you know legends of the game and legends of British boxing
29:51there's something real sting in the shots from Paul's he believes his method is going to prevail
29:57I'll say now that if Heaney comes through and stands up to this test
30:01his name is elevated up with some of the more talented
30:06fighters who've adorned this title over the years and I mean that as a compliment to Heaney
30:14willpower belief tremendous fitness those are the reasons Heaney has got to this stage in his career
30:23and achieve what he has achieved and let nobody denigrate it but this might be the hardest fight
30:28of his career Richie I think I think it is poor I think last time was a hard fight with this one
30:33because it's it's really uh livened up earlier on in the contest than it did the first one
30:39that's probably the confidence that Brad Paul has taken from that first fight they have and
30:43going those 12 rounds but again toe to toe stop Heaney can't trying to keep the punches straight
30:50gets caught there he was hurt again
30:58I know it's all been said about the atmosphere generated by Heaney fights incidentally
31:03this is extraordinary here tonight in Birmingham
31:07the fight and the occasion and Paul's six to end the round strong stepping into his
31:13man again keeping the tempo up all kinds of distress signals remember the eighth round
31:19round it hasn't taken nearly as long this time but this eighth round this time has been another
31:24really hard round for Heaney as hard as he tries
31:33let's get away with Carl Frampton over to you Carl that turned into another great fight guys
31:37it's kind of as we expected but again up until this point it's been a fight of two halves
31:43and Nathan Heaney winning the first three rounds at a at a jump really he was winning the majority
31:49of round four as well until he got the knockdown and then obviously he had to score in a 10-8 the
31:53other way but since the knockdown Paul has just taken over and Luke he looks to be bullying
32:00Nathan Heaney in there at times I think I still think that Paul's could be doing a little bit
32:05more work throwing a little bit more leather rather than trying to look for the one shot but
32:10I think he's in control at this stage
32:16thank you Carl and over to you Richie your scorecard please yeah I've got um Brad Paul's
32:22winning the last two rounds um he's up by one on my scorecard it's fairly close but like Carl has
32:30said I think there's a general feeling now that Brad Paul's you know he's having more success
32:36and Nathan Heaney seems to be tiring a little bit he's really feeling the pace
32:40so he needs to get a second win from somewhere and concentrate on those straight shots but again
32:44it's Brad Paul's on that front foot right from the off it's Paul's in this ninth round

33:03the right eye of Nathan Heaney starting to look a little bit
33:07swollen he's taken a lot of punishment
33:11now
33:28I think Heaney knows what he's got to do in terms of keeping his range of boxing existence
33:33but it's Brad Paul's determination to come forward and Heaney's just finding it harder
33:38and harder to keep him at bay with these straight shots
33:44the hardest question of all Richie is to forecast who will prevail given how tight it was
33:49after the 12 rounds last time
33:53but we are loving it yeah it's a cracker isn't it really is
34:08so
34:20it seems as though he's pushed a barrier aside mentally never before the first Heaney fight
34:26Paul's beyond the 10th round but he proved so much to himself by getting stronger in the second half
34:31of that fight that was a good shot there from Heaney and left hook to the body and again he's
34:37hurt Paul's there with a couple of good left hooks you've seen the body language in Paul the way he
34:41went back he went back to his corner went back to the ropes that's a sign that fire is in distress
34:46there for Matt left up to the body no question can't Heaney get the jab working again
34:55it's such a great span in the fight from Paul's he's landed so many big shots and he's hurt Heaney
35:00on any number of occasions but can he keep it going there are some better moments now for Heaney
35:07a bit of accuracy in his work which has been lacking quite honestly for three or four hours
35:16still a little bit tense there Heaney trying to land the shot missed the opportunity
35:20knew that Paul's made the mistake he's got to make his boxing flow a little bit better but
35:25yeah it has been a better round for Heaney this big shot on the end of it from Paul's
35:32the spirit between these guys is fantastic and even Michael Alexander joins in
35:37with a little pat on the back to Paul's at the end of the round it's got it all folks

36:05and suck it up one two the bobo lazy like that give me a drink drink drink drink where's the drink come
36:14come on come on he looks old he looks old he looks old and tired man you're f*****g fresh

36:30the pressure's on even in the corners it means so much to both camps
36:34the chance for Heaney to really establish himself as an outstanding champion at British level and
36:42possibly reopen the door which was beginning to open for him to even bigger nights potentially
36:50at the home of his beloved Stoke City in world class
36:54I thought Brad Paul's in that last round Paul just slowed down a little bit and that suited Heaney
37:02so it's that slower pace and we spoke about earlier when Heaney controls it with the jab
37:07and the long straight right hand like he's doing now and the feet are slow from Brad Paul's
37:11Heaney has most of the success you have to see another injection of pace from Brad Paul's
37:18so he had a bit of a round off there that last round or laps in concentration whatever
37:22might be feeling the pace a little bit he's called us certainly um had him about it in the corner
37:28they give him a little bit of a roasting so they wanted him to pick it up a little bit and I see
37:32what they're talking about there that's because it's all still a little bit new to him isn't it
37:38the long hard fight over 12 rounds at championship level Richard yeah absolutely and you do have
37:43rounds in the 12 rounder where you just take the foot you naturally take the foot off the gas
37:49sometimes you don't even realize it but it's just a just the pace of the contest
37:53and this has been thought of a cracking pace a ferocious affair throughout
37:59three rounds basically to decide it
38:05there has been a little sign of improvement for Heaney
38:09in the ninth and at times early in the 10th round but
38:14just the sense that Paul's might have come through that little low point and out the other side
38:21yeah just finding his range a little bit better now Nathan Heaney with those jabs
38:29Brad Paul's again showing signs he's a little bit tired so he's got to
38:34just change things here and make sure that Heaney doesn't get into a rhythm
38:39because when he does behind that jab controlling the pace and distance
38:43he's certainly having the best of it
38:50what we know is that if it comes down to one thing and one thing only and it is willpower
38:56Heaney will be in the argument with you if he's on his feet right to the very end
