00:00The Disability Royal Commission into Violence, Abuse and Neglect and Discrimination of People
00:05with Disability was a key moment in our nation's history. The Royal Commission received evidence
00:12from almost 10,000 people over four and a half years. It was a momentous piece of work.
00:19What was uncovered throughout the Royal Commission was confronting, shocking and
00:23often incredibly disturbing. Circumstances of appalling experiences of abuse and neglect and
00:30discrimination against people with disability were revealed that have absolutely no place
00:35in our country and quite frankly anywhere. The Australian Government accepts or accepts in
00:41principle 130 of the 172 recommendations that the Commonwealth has sole or joint responsibility with.
00:51Our initial response to the Disability Royal Commission today gives us an even stronger path
00:58towards a more equitable and inclusive Australia where people with disability can be safe, thrive
01:06and we are absolutely committed to achieving this goal. Coming from our consultations,
01:11four key pillars have emerged that are central to our Government's response.
01:16These are better safeguarding, promoting inclusion and accessibility, upholding human
01:22rights and recognising the unique perspectives and experiences of First Nations people with
01:29disability. These are all areas that people with disability have continuously highlighted
01:36as important and will drive the focus of our Government as we progress reform
01:41towards a more inclusive Australia.
