Dodgers and Padres Intensify Rivalry at the Deadline

00:00All right, so listen, let me say this, that what made yesterday so amazing, at least for
00:08me as a fan, is that you've got the Dodgers in first place and we all know about all their
00:14injuries and we all know that the expectations that they have.
00:18And then you've got the Padres who don't have anywhere near those expectations, okay?
00:23But they are in it and they're going to be buyers rather than sellers because of the
00:27way the second half of the season started.
00:29And you've got two teams that are both battling to make trades for arms.
00:34And there was one trade that was made yesterday where the Padres had gotten a pitcher from
00:38Miami and according to the reports, the Dodgers were also in on potentially trying to trade
00:45for this guy.
00:47And they just kept kind of raising the stakes.
00:49So the Padres had to put in more and more to get the guy that they wanted.
00:53Alex, let's go through everything that the Padres and the Dodgers did yesterday.
00:59How about we pay attention to the ones that matter for the Dodgers real quick?
01:05Cause you know, 10 minutes before the trade deadline, I was like, dude, they're really
01:08not going to do anything other than get a broken Tommy Edmond like in, in a, in an unreliable
01:13middle reliever.
01:14Like, are they really not going to add to this starting rotation?
01:17And then of course the Dodgers being the Dodgers, they get the big fish and they get clarity
01:22from the Tigers.
01:23Who's so far this season, seven and five to nine, five ERA, 133 strikeouts to 19 walks,
01:30five and one through June and July.
01:32So he's really stepped it up here.
01:34And now the Dodgers who we all assume needed starting pitching, got starting pitching.
01:38But that guy flarity.
01:39I mean, I'm not exactly sitting around watching Detroit Tigers baseball all the time.
01:44So I don't want to act like I'm equivalent of them getting Max Scherzer.
01:47No, it's not.
01:48A couple of years ago.
01:49Right.
01:50I think he got clarity a few years ago.
01:52I'm talking like five years ago.
01:54He's like a Cy Young Kennedy.
01:55I think he finished fourth in the Cy Young in 2019.
01:58You'd have to fact check me, but I'm like 99.9% sure.
02:02And then in the last, like last season, I think he was in St. Louis and in Baltimore
02:07and he did, he was a deadline day deal to Baltimore.
02:12And he was awful once he got to Baltimore for their final stretch, didn't even start
02:15a game in the playoffs for them.
02:16So there you go.
02:17So you get what I'm saying is that like five years ago, he was a Cy Young candidate.
02:22Then last year, he's not really doing that great.
02:26And he gets traded.
02:27And to your point, he doesn't really perform for Baltimore, but he's made a massive comeback
02:31in his career this year.
02:33And the Dodgers went out and said, we need an arm.
02:36He was the best guy available.
02:37They went out and got him because you don't know what's going to happen because like you
02:40look at tonight's game, Padres Dodgers for the Padres is Dylan cease coming off of a
02:44no hitter.
02:45So for the Padres, it's a, it's Clayton Kershaw who's coming off of his, what did I say?

02:56It's Dylan cease coming off of a no hitter for the Dodgers.
02:58It's Clayton Kershaw coming off of his first start of the entire season where he only gave
03:01you four innings.
03:02So advantage San Diego tonight.
03:05Ooh, listen, this is a big matchup.
03:09I know Clayton Kershaw isn't what he used to be, but that name and that color that still
03:13resonates that still gets people to the television and the LNC is coming off a no hitter.
03:19This is a big pitching matchup and now you added to what happened last night.
03:23The atmosphere for this game, it's going to be in the air.
03:26And I would assume that I would assume that a lot of the guys they got yesterday or the
03:30day before or should be in town tonight and they're going to need it because the Padres
03:34went through a lot of bullpen yesterday.
03:36So which has been, you know, I know people disagree with, I didn't think it was their
03:39biggest need and I know they, they needed to help that bullpen.
03:44I mean, Robert Suarez has come in and I believe 13 non-save situations this season.
03:48That's not ideal.
03:49So now they really did bolster their, their bullpen.
03:52They got Jason Adam.
03:54They got Tanner Scott, who was the Marlins all-star and that's what I was talking about.

03:59So this is what it looked since the beginning of the baseball season, March, February, spring
04:03training.
04:04This is every player that's come in and every prospect slash player that's gone out so far
04:10for the Padres this season.
04:12Look at this list.
04:13It's not edited at all.
04:15I know it feels like years ago, but Dylan cease was acquired in March.
04:19Louisa dies was acquired in April and I didn't, you know, sync up the, the, the trades to
04:24who they got for who I'm just telling you, this is everybody that the projects have got
04:28Jason Adam, the relief pitcher, Tanner Scott, Brian Hoeing's a relief pitcher, Brandon Lockridge
04:32is like a triple a guy and Martin Perez, who's this year's Rich Hill.
04:36In my opinion, I don't think you're going to do much, but Hey, they got the guy.
04:38He can start some games if you need them, but, but look at the other side of the screen,
04:42the outgoing side, you see the number 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12, 13.
04:50Those prospects to 13 are gone.
04:53You have one and then you have 14 through 23 because after that, but bottom line is
05:00this.
05:01The Padres have traded away their entire minor league system to try and win.
05:06Now we thought they were aggressive when they went and got Juan Soto two years ago.
05:10They have nothing left as of today in their system.
05:14Oh, nothing.
05:15They're willing to trade.
05:16They're not going to trade.
05:17Correct.
05:18They're not going to trade debris.
05:19Other than that, they're got nothing.
