00:00Okay, so there are a lot of vehicles passing through Metro Manila and there are people guarding them and counting them.
00:06Let's find out what their job is in the story of JM and Sinas. JM!
00:14Kuya Kim, there's a saying that a job is easy if all you have to do is count.
00:19But what if you count hundreds of vehicles passing through the main streets of Metro Manila?
00:25Can you do it?
00:26That's the job of a traffic surveyor and some of their vehicles are familiar to us.
00:31That's the news here in Taguig City.
00:36Along General Santos Avenue in Taguig City, hundreds of vehicles pass by every day.
00:42But how can we know the number and type of vehicles passing by?
00:46That's the job of an MMDA Traffic Surveyor.
00:49Using a rope or a counter, they count the vehicles on the streets.
00:54Father Pablo is 63 years old. He has been counting vehicles for 37 years.
00:59This is our job. It's very unique because it's rare.
01:02Most people don't know that there's a job like this.
01:05You're inspired to work. You do it every day in different locations.
01:08The surveyors don't know the exact number of vehicles passing by every day.
01:12They just know the number of cars and the noise of the streets.
01:15They just do what they're assigned to do.
01:17They teach us how to classify vehicles.
01:20They separate cars, motorcycles, taxis. They separate all those classifications.
01:25This is done manually.
01:29It doesn't need batteries.
01:32It's up to you how to use it because it doesn't have a classification.
01:36I only use one type of vehicle.
01:38For example, this is a car, this is a motorcycle, this is a taxi, a jeep, a taxi, a UV.
01:43Now, it's existing. It's not a counter anymore.
01:46It's a bike. You just do what you're assigned to do.
01:49There are 11 vehicle classifications that they count.
01:52These include the number of people passing by.
01:55In their calculation of cars,
01:57the MMDA has data that they use as a basis for making police cars and vans
02:02to improve the road conditions.
02:05This is the foundation of our traffic engineering interventions in Metro Manila.
02:10In the MMDA, we always do a scientific approach.
02:14We get data. We use advanced software.
02:17More than 90% of their calculations are correct or accurate
02:21when manual counting is used
02:23compared to AI technology that requires the use of advanced camera with vehicle detection software.
02:28Becoming a traffic surveyor is a proof that there is no easy job,
02:32especially that the data they get can help ease the traffic situation in cities.
02:39Kuya Kim, even at night,
02:41the calculation of traffic and vehicle surveyors is still ongoing.
02:45It's a challenging day because it's already dark,
02:48but they can calculate more in these hours because it's already rush hour.
02:54That's the latest from Taguig City.
02:56I'm JM Encinas, and that's the story that you should know.
02:59Kuya Kim!
03:01Thank you very much, JM Encinas.
03:04Maraming salamat, JM Encinas.
