Paris 'sorry' for any offence over Olympic opening ceremony

Organisers of the Paris Olympics say they are "really sorry" for any offence caused by their daring and quirky opening ceremony but denied "any intention to show disrespect to any religious group." Some Catholic groups and French bishops have condemned what they saw as "scenes of derision and mockery of Christianity" in the parade choreographed by theatre director Thomas Jolly.

00:06Good morning everyone and welcome. We're going to start a particular focus on trying to get
00:14all of these things right from the IOC's perspective. And what are your expectations
00:19for the performance of Team China? There was never an intention to show disrespect to any
00:28religious group. On the contrary, I think that Major Neill really tried to
00:33really intend to celebrate community tolerance. That was his word yesterday. And looking at the
00:40result of the polls that we shared, we believe that this ambition was achieved. If people
00:48have taken any offense, we are of course really, really sorry.
