00:00Well, we're here at Sydney Airport about to surprise our guest of honour, who any moment
00:07will get off a plane.
00:09She arrived in Australia as a pregnant 16-year-old.
00:13With high hopes of making a career in the music industry, she achieved that and a lot
00:18more.
00:19In fact, she went on to become the highest-selling female recording artist in the country.
00:25And since then, she's become one of the nation's true divas.
00:28Now, she's about to get off the flight any moment, so please join us for the sting.
00:47Oh, don't be like that.
00:49Now, that's not a very nice reception.
00:51Come here.
00:52I'm thinking who's coming off the plane.
00:54With all these cameras.
00:57This is your life.
01:00Thank you.
01:01Don't thank me.
01:02Oh, my goodness.
01:03Yeah.
01:04And you thought you were going to have just a nice, quiet afternoon.
01:07I was hoping to God I would, yeah.
01:09Sure.
01:10I'm not moving here.
01:11I do.
01:12I'm impressed.
01:13I saw the appreciation.
01:1422-year-old appreciation society.
01:15Yeah.
01:16You look embarrassed.
01:17I'm totally embarrassed.
01:18I'm taken aback.
01:19I thought I was good, but, you know, I mean, I'm not that good.
01:25We're going to do the show tonight, and I hope you'll enjoy every second of it.
01:29Yes, I shall.
01:30It'll be an interesting experience.
01:31Excuse me.
01:32It shall be an interesting experience.
01:46Ladies and gentlemen, Marcia Holland.
01:48Whoo!
01:53Oh, that is some reception.
02:01Fantastic.
02:06Now, Marcia, paying tribute to you tonight, of course, this would have to be a musical show.
02:11Yes.
02:12And we were wondering, with your permission, if you would...
02:14You haven't asked my permission at all today, really.
02:17So why start now, you know?
02:20True, true.
02:21Well, that's why we thought we would.
02:22Yes.
02:23We would ask you if you could start the show off with us tonight, if you don't mind, with your wonderful, wonderful number one hit, You.
02:30It'd be my pleasure.
02:31Ladies and gentlemen, Miss Marcia Hines.
02:48Oh, I, I can't remember when I felt this high
02:56Must be something special about the way you're loving me tonight
03:06You know that I, I can't remember when I felt this right
03:11No, loving you the way I do
03:14Made me feel like a shooting star
03:16Shining bright, shining far
03:18I wonder how I ever got here long
03:21Without you
03:24Something very special about you
03:28Oh, let me think back
03:30It's true
03:32It's true
03:35Yeah
03:38Oh, I was
03:41Sitting back and watching my whole life go by
03:45Until he came along, he picked me up
03:48Yes, he did, yeah, yes, he did
03:51Oh, and now
03:53Starting out a brand new life
03:57Everything I say and I do
03:59It's all because of you, baby
04:01You're giving me a new world
04:03And I wonder how I ever got here long
04:06Without you
04:09Something very special about you
04:13Oh, let me think about you
04:16Think about you
04:18It's true
04:20Yeah
04:28Oh, baby
04:30Oh, baby, you, yeah
04:36I'm talking about you, baby
04:38It's only you, only you
04:42Something very special about you
04:46Oh, let me think about you
04:48It's true, baby
04:50It's true, baby
04:53Yeah
04:55Oh, alright
05:02Without you
05:04There is something
05:05Very special about you
05:09Oh, let me think about me
05:12It's true, baby
05:13It's true, baby
05:16Yeah
05:18Oh, let me think
05:21Something very special about you
05:25Oh, let me think about you
05:28Think about you
05:30Think about you
05:33Yeah
05:36Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah
05:41You, you
05:58Marsha Elaine Hines
06:00You're born on the 20th of July
06:021953 in Boston
06:05You're the younger of two to Esmeralda and Eugene
06:08You're only a few months old
06:10when you lose your father
06:12So your mum becomes the breadwinner
06:14and the guiding force in your life
06:17along with your wonderful brother, Dwight
06:19As a child, every Sunday
06:21you travel to three or more churches
06:24to hear the gospel choirs
06:26At seven, you make your singing debut
06:29at a mother-daughter banquet
06:31But it's also a very different career
06:34that you have in mind at this stage, isn't it?
06:36It is
06:37I plan to be a mortician
06:39A mortician
06:41I did, yeah
06:42Why?
06:43Oh, I think it's important
06:44that you look good when you're going out, you know
06:49You know
06:50But at that age
06:51you did have a fascination with scat, true?
06:53I did, I truly did
06:54until I actually saw a friend in there
06:56and that's when my fascination went with it
06:58It kind of went out the window, yeah
06:59Yeah
07:00Well, by 13
07:01you do have a burning desire to sing
07:04So you now enter a talent quest
07:06with a new stage name
07:08Can you tell us that name?
07:10Yeah, Chante Renée
07:12I just kind of thought
07:13Marsha Hines was just a bit too plain
07:15But nobody, everybody just kept calling me Marsha
07:17And so I got rid of Chante Renée, you know
07:20And went back to Marsha
07:22I did, I did
07:23In the summer of 1969
07:25you're 16
07:26and it's the height of the Vietnam War
07:28and there's a Broadway musical
07:30creating controversy
07:31with a strong war message and rock beat
07:34The musical is called Hair
07:36and a new production is planned for Australia
07:39Producers are looking for a raw talent
07:42So you audition
07:44you put your age up to 18
07:46and get the job
07:48I did
07:49Two weeks later
07:50you land at King's Cross

08:29The show's producer
08:31is Harry M Miller
08:33who becomes your legal guardian
08:35He joins us now
08:37along with your co-star from Hair
08:39and your long time friend
08:41Denny Gordon
08:42Hi, this is great
08:56Now Harry, you had no idea she was 16?
08:58No, but in those days
09:00when these two looked at you
09:01with their big brown eyes
09:02you'd believe anything
09:04And I did
09:05There were a couple of other things
09:06I didn't know
09:08that unfolded a little bit later
09:10if you'll pardon the expression
09:12But you know
09:13she was incredible talent
09:15I mean, just
09:17every muscle, every bone in her body
09:19exuded talent
09:20She was extraordinary
09:21She gave everything
09:23And separate from that
09:26she's a really good person
09:28God bless you, Harry
09:29But you taught me

09:50Denny was my pal
09:52We grew up together

27:57Marsha
27:58you have a dispute
27:59with your record company
28:00it's almost two years
28:01before you go back

28:03and while this is supposed
28:05to be a time
28:06of celebration
28:07your elation
28:08turns to deep sorrow
28:09with the news
28:10that your brother Dwight
28:11whom you have always

29:05you decide to drop out
29:06of music
29:07and the public eye
29:08altogether
29:09and it's now you sink
29:10into a pretty deep depression
29:12yes
29:13why
29:14I think because maybe
29:15I'd been in the public eye
29:17since I was 16
29:18and that was like
29:19a good 16 years
29:20in the public eye
29:21and when
29:23you're so used to
29:25being seen
29:26and being fussed over
29:27and it all
29:28just stops
29:30it's a pretty amazing thing
29:31but of course
29:32hindsight is 20-20
29:34and I realize now
29:36if I hadn't done it
29:37I would have been
29:38totally burnt out by now
29:39so it's all good
29:40but yes it was
29:41also it was important

29:49to your children
29:50yes
29:51you know you stay close
29:52to them or you try
29:53and kill them
29:54right
29:55yeah
29:56when they're teenagers
29:57and she got through it okay
29:58so it's all good
29:59you know
30:00and you know
30:01through good friends
30:02and family
30:03I got through it
30:04you sure did
30:05and after the break

32:13with a very good
32:14friend of hers
32:15and a manager
32:16Peter Ricks
32:17so I'll have to
32:18take my inspiration
