00:00Setting up a second 5G network will increase capital expenditure due to redundant infrastructure.
00:08Economist Goh Lim Tai of University Malaya said this after the federal government began
00:12moves for a second 5G network operated by private telecommunications companies after
00:18having set up government-owned Digital Nasional Berhad in 2021 as the wholesaler of 5G services.
00:25Goh estimated that setting up the network would cost billions, which would ultimately
00:28be borne by consumers.
00:31Estimates suggest that deploying a nationwide 5G network can cost between RM7-10 billion,
00:36he said.
00:37Internet veteran Mohd Awang Lah suggested an infrastructure sharing arrangement to avoid
00:42redundancy and increased costs for consumers.
00:45Mohd said if the government proceeds with the dual-network model, the second network
00:49should cover the remaining 20% not covered by DNB, to avoid doubling the infrastructure
00:55costs.
00:56Consumer advocate T Saravanan of the Federation of Malaysian Consumers Associations called
01:01for a strategic pause in the 5G rollout to reassess financial implications and reduce
01:06redundancies.
01:08He said the pause would ensure that infrastructure investments are aligned with national interests
01:12and economic stability.
