00:00The Meeting Place The Lord commands a dwelling place for himself.
00:07In a word, that is what the tabernacle is for to house the Ark.
00:11The Ark secures the purpose for which the tabernacle is intended.
00:15The Place to Meet the Indwelling God The Ark is to be overlaid and inlaid with
00:20gold, which, among the metals of the tabernacle, stands for all that is special and glorious,
00:26the very presence of God.
00:29Inside the Ark is to be placed the tablets of the Covenant Law, called the Testimony
00:33in the NKJV because they testify to who and what the Lord is, to what he requires of his
00:39redeemed people, and, by implication, to our need before him as those who have broken his
00:45law.
00:46Next, however, is the Mercy Seat, a holy golden lid made to the exact measurements of the
00:53Ark so as to cover it precisely.
00:56In Hebrew it is the kapareth or covering, but the parent verb kephar, while in its simple
01:01form means to cover, in its developed form means to pay the covering price as we saw
01:05on Day 24.
01:08The kapareth, then, is the atonement covering or the price covering the debt.
01:13This name comes into its own on the Day of Atonement, when the atoning blood is sprinkled
01:18on the Mercy Seat, and the atonement cover receives the price that covers the sins and
01:23transgressions of Israel.
01:26The symbolism is of the broken law covered by the sprinkled price of a substitutionary
01:30life laid down in death.
01:33Integral to the Mercy Seat are the cherubim figures turned inward and gazing downwards.
01:38Ezekiel 1 verse 10 reveals the cherubim as having four faces, representing the whole
01:43of creation that of a lion, the greatest of wild beasts, an eagle, the greatest of birds,
01:50an ox, the greatest of domestic beasts, and a man, the crown of creation.
01:56The cherubim are both earthly and unearthly, because the whole of heaven and earth is focused
02:00on the wonder of the atonement.
02:03Reflection Consider these words.
02:07Be thou my shield and hiding place that, sheltered by thy side, I may my fierce accuser face,
02:13and tell him thou hast died.
