00:00This is exactly 24 hours after the sad and unfortunate accident that transpired just
00:08meters away from here at one of the coaching institutes here in old Rajinder Nagar.
00:1324 hours have passed and this particular area, which is otherwise known as a breeding ground
00:19for UPSC aspirants in India, not just in Delhi, has shot to infamy overnight.
00:26What you see right behind me are thousands and thousands of students who have come out
00:31protesting against the loss of three lives.
00:35A sea of students here shouting, Tana Shahi Nahi Chalegi, MCB Hai Hai, clearly reflecting
00:43the anger of the students against the municipal board, the municipal council of Delhi.
00:51The students are saying that not elaborate arrangements were made in order to safeguard
00:57the life of the students and also all the norms were flouted.
01:02Money was exchanged hands and the contract to pass the design of that particular building
01:08where the lives were lost was only a sham.
01:11And this is what the students believe and they are demanding compensation for the students
01:16who have lost their lives.
01:17I have never seen this kind of protest in my journalistic career except for 2013 when
01:23Nirbhaya incident didn't happen.
01:25And again, lakhs of people in New Delhi had come out on the streets and trust me, this
01:30is the scene.
01:31A busy road otherwise, but this time around all the educational institutions have shut
01:35shop and what is open is only chai shops and restaurants and the students have dotted this
01:41one kilometre stretch of road which leads to the iconic Karol Bagh railway station which
01:47was earlier jam-packed.
01:48Police authorities have resolved to use some force to remove the students but thankfully
01:53there was no Lathi Chal.
01:55But as the evening has descended, 24 hours after the incident, unfortunate incident of
02:00loss of lives, now we see a sea of students coming out in support and expressing their
02:05solidarity with the lost lives.
02:08Every candle light march, this every 500 metres from here, you would see students expressing
02:13solidarity and putting up candles.
02:15This is absolute solidarity and camaraderie being demonstrated here.
02:22Remember, these are graduate students, they are not even undergraduate students, graduate
02:27students who come here from all quarters of the country to prepare for UPSC examinations
02:34and lo and behold, today they are sitting and protesting against the government on how
02:41and why these lives were lost.
02:44For this, even the parents have expressed their solitude and support and we met a lot
02:49of family members here who are also equally anxious and unhappy with what has happened.
02:56If I may ask the lady here if she would like to share some thoughts, ma'am, if you don't
03:02mind, if I am not intruding.
03:05Whatever has happened is unfortunate and what you are doing is creating history.
03:10Where does this go from here?
03:12All from coaching media mafias.
03:16Coaching media mafias.
03:17How does this happen?
03:18Why do you believe this happens?
03:19And today, after such a big incident, this has been seen.
03:20Sir, this has been there from the beginning.
03:21This drainage problem has been there from the beginning.
03:22Yes.
03:23Because when we used to come, mostly the water used to stay up to the knees, but now
03:30that the incident has happened, it is coming in front of the people.
03:35The children don't want to listen to it first because when we go there and ask questions
03:40related to the study, they are not answered correctly.
03:43Yes.
03:44So, who will listen to this issue?
03:46Absolutely.
03:47Who will entertain us with all this?
03:50If no one will listen to this, the media is doing a lot of coverage here.
03:54The questions that you are asking.
03:55Thank you very much for that.
03:56No, no, absolutely.
03:57Like you are sweating, we are also with you in this.
04:00But the question is that a protest like this starts and somewhere, like these candles,
04:05the fire is extinguished.
04:07Do you think there is a spark from somewhere, which is enough to go further?
04:11Sir, we are trying.
04:12Yes.
04:13To go further.
04:14Yes.
04:15Let's see who all supports us.
04:16In that, your support, children's support, everything is necessary.
04:19Absolutely.
04:20I would like to know from you if you want.
04:22There should be no politics on this.
04:24Sir, I want to speak.
04:25Please.
04:26You want to speak?
04:27Okay.
04:28Thank you.
04:29Yes, please.
04:30Sir, I think all of you are going to prepare for UPSC.
04:32I am a local here.
04:33I live in Patel Nagar.
04:34Yes.
04:35Even now, these people are missing a lot of issues.
04:37I mean, I know what happened.
04:38You tell me what the issues are.
04:39I have also seen the electric wire.
04:40Sir, I live in Ranjeet Nagar, which is a part of Patel Nagar.
04:43A lot of UPSC people live there too.
04:45The building was built 20 years ago.
04:48I am ready to tell you my address.
04:50The building was built 20 years ago.
04:52Do you know what the entry condition is for that?
04:54Two rooms are put on top of it.
04:56Now those rooms are on rent.
04:58The rule of the government is that if you want to make parking,
05:01then you have to make four flats above.
05:03And if there is no parking, then you can make a total of four.
05:06I can show you a building of 5-6 floors in Ranjeet Nagar.
05:09Absolutely.
05:10I can show you a building whose first two floors were built 25 years ago.
05:14Then they put a floor 5 years ago.
05:16So, all that is weak.
05:18People have flats in the basement.
05:20Which is not allowed at all.
05:22The MCD here, a big party member came here,
05:24Ankush Narang, brother of Patel Nagar and all that crap.
05:27The party people here.
05:28After he came, he taught how corruption happens.
05:31The builder lobby there is also completely in order, sir.
05:33See, absolutely.
05:34I agree with your sentiments.
05:36But one thing that is very dangerous is that if we are awake today,
05:40then consider it morning.
05:42And what starts from here,
05:44consider it as accountability.
05:46Before this, it is not that this has not happened in Delhi.
05:48I think these people are around 25 years old.
05:51When I finished college in 2014,
05:53Nirbhaya protest took place in that area.
05:55I told you, this was in 2013.
05:57We have seen the Annawala protest.
05:59I am from a humble background.
06:02We have seen such affluent girls protesting together.
06:08Nothing happens, sir.
06:09Nothing happens.
06:10You have to kill yourself.
06:14Arvind Kejriwal and a councillor came here once.
06:18Okay, I understand what you are saying.
06:20Again, I will say that roping in the politicians as of now is not going to help.
06:25If the youngsters, if the youth of the future of this country
06:28really wants to hold on to power,
06:30now this is the time and that's what they are demonstrating.
06:33Scenes reminiscent of the movie Rang De Basanti,
06:36whether it would transpire,
06:38the systemic failure that has been there time and again,
06:41whether that would be mended remains to be seen.
