Hannah John-Kamen and Jake Schreier chat with THR at San Diego Comic-Con and reveal the biggest challenge while making Marvel's 'Thunderbolts*.' Plus, they talk about how this movie is different from other Marvel movies fans have seen before.

00:00What was the biggest challenge you feel like you faced while making this movie?
00:04Um, I think that, you know, we got challenged by Kevin in the beginning of this to really make something different
00:09and also to really lean into a ton of practical effects and shooting on location
00:13and doing things for real, even if that meant that it was smaller, but if it felt real and textured and grounded
00:18that that was something he was excited about and it's certainly something I'm excited about as a filmmaker
00:22but it's not easy to do when you have superheroes in the film, so we just had an incredible group of stunt people
00:28and second unit directors and effects people and special effects people who hadn't done this stuff in forever
00:32of like having chairs fly at people and actually hit them and all the things that kind of
00:37maybe we've gotten away from in recent times and it wasn't easy to bring that back
00:42but it was a very fun challenge to try.
00:46How is this movie different than other Marvel movies we've seen before?
00:50So, how is it different? You want me to answer it?
00:54Do you know what? I just find that with the characters and, you know, like with the misfitness of us all
01:00and, you know, we're all villains and, you know, we're in this movie
01:03it starts off with this kind of obstacle already and it's, I think it's fun because we're not a team.
01:12We don't know how, I don't know what team means. No one in this movie knows what is a team, huh?
01:20So it's kind of, it's different, like we're starting in such a different place
01:24and like I was saying, like this movie, it's funny, you really get to know the characters
01:29and the depths of, you know, what they're going through, what they've done, what is right,
01:36what they believe in, you know, the heart of what they actually care about actually
01:41and that's a big thing because also the audience, you want them to,
01:45and I think they will really care about these characters and, you know, not just kind of vilify them
01:52and actually understand them and relate in a way.
01:55And yeah, so I think that's different from, you know, the kind of your usual superhero movie.
02:04Definitely. And for both of you, what was it like being up on that Hall H stage today?
02:09Oh, it was amazing. It was amazing, just seeing the sea of fans and the energy
02:16and just, that's why I do this, you know.
02:19It's that gorgeous love in the room for this and the fans and the support.
02:25I mean, it wouldn't be, we wouldn't be doing it without our fans
02:28and it's just, it was, yeah, it's enigmatic, it's magic.
02:32Yeah, I mean, well, I'm editing right now, so I was in the tiny editing room until 8pm last night
02:37trying to get this thing put together.
02:38So it's nice to actually see a bunch of people watching it and remind you, like, how much it means to people.
02:44And, you know, we just hope it meant so much to us making it and we put so much into it
02:48and it's nice to feel that it matters to the people that want to watch it
02:52and it inspires you to want to work that hard and give them something that they can appreciate.
