00:00Mr. Speaker, in the United States, over one-third of all food produced is never consumed, including
00:07a significant portion of livestock and animal products.
00:10Now, think about that for a minute.
00:12For the amount that is consumed, half of it is not.
00:17That's the equivalent of 143 billion meals, enough to feed every American three times
00:22over for a year.
00:24This waste comes at enormous financial cost.
00:27Over $473 billion worth of food is thrown away annually.
00:31Beyond that monetary loss, this waste results in unnecessary consumption of resources, water
00:36and energy.
00:37The production of animal resources demands a significant amount of water and energy.
00:41When food is wasted, so too are these critical resources.
00:45When meat is discarded, all the water used in its production is wasted as well, which
00:49is a high water use.
00:52Energy expended in raising, processing, transporting these products is lost, wasted, contributing
00:57to inefficiencies and waste of resources.
00:59Farmers, I am one, invest countless hours, labor and resources into growing crops and
01:04raising livestock.
01:06It drives us crazy to see it wasted.
01:09Transportation also plays a crucial role.
01:11We lose that energy.
01:12We must do better on utilizing our food.
01:14So kids, don't go hungry.
