00:00Hi kids, today we will learn about a type of data chart, which is called pie chart.
00:09So let's start.
00:11Data chart is a type of diagram or graph where data is represented by various symbols, such
00:19as bars and bar graph, lines and line graph, or slices in a pie chart.
00:27We make data charts so that large quantity of data is easily read and the relationships
00:34between different parts of data can be easily understood.
00:40Today we will be learning about pie charts.
00:46Data chart that presents percentages in different groups are often displayed in a pie chart.
00:54Pie chart is good for showing how a whole is divided up.
00:59Example, how much money is spent on each thing in a budget can be represented using a pie
01:06chart.
01:07A pie chart shows percentage values as a slice of pie.
01:14Let's learn it with examples.
01:17Here we have a pie chart.
01:20Let's try to read it.
01:23Title says pie chart shows the favorite movies.
01:28First of all, this circle is representing 4 plus 4 plus 5 plus 1 plus 6 equals 20 people.
01:38And different slices of pie shows the people with different choice of movies.
01:44As labels on the graph, tells green portion represents the fraction of people out of 20
01:51people that likes comedy movies.
01:55Label also says 4 people, which is 20% of 20 people like comedy movies.
02:05Now labels on the graph tells purple portion represents the fraction of people that likes
02:11action movies.
02:13Label also says 5 people, which is 25% of 20 people like action movies.
02:22So percentage of circle that each portion represents says that much percentage out of
02:30the total number of people like that type of movie.
02:35Now labels on the graph tells blue portion represents the fraction of people that likes
02:41drama movies.
02:44Label also says 1 people, which is 5% of 20 people likes drama movies, and so on.
02:54So when we have to show percentage values, we use a pie chart, where the percentage portion
03:01of the circle represents the percentage value.
03:06And the whole set of things are represented by a whole circle.
03:12Now let's learn another example.
03:16Here we have a pie chart.
03:19Let's read it.
03:22Here the title says, it is about the imported fruits.
03:27And according to labels, this portion shows percent of apples imported out of total fruits
03:34imported.
03:36The percentage of apples imported out of total fruits imported is 27%.
03:45The percentage of oranges imported out of total fruits imported is 24%.
03:54The percentage of bananas imported out of total fruits imported is only 4%.
04:02And fruits which are imported least are kiwi and strawberries.
04:08And their share out of total fruits imported is only 3% each, which is least of all fruits.
04:18And the fruit that is imported the most is apples, which is 27%.
04:26So kids, let's take another example.
04:32Here we have a pie chart for sale of three different years, 2012, 2013, and 2014.
04:43And key shows that different colors represent different magazines sold.
04:49So each pie chart shows the percentage sale of different magazines in a year.
04:56Like in 2012, 59% users subscribed one-on-one magazine, 21% users subscribed Chemstar magazine.
05:11Now from the three pie charts shown, we can clearly conclude that subscribers of one-on-one
05:18are decreasing, 59%, 49%, 38%.
05:27In 2012, 59% of people subscribed to one-on-one magazine.
05:34In 2013, 49% people subscribed one-on-one magazine.
05:42In 2014, 38% of people subscribed one-on-one magazine.
05:50So its subscribers are decreasing.
05:54And subscribers of Chemstar are increasing.
05:582012, 21%, 2013, 23%, 2014, 25%.
06:10More trends can be easily, like subscribers of effort are increasing.
06:172012, 10%, 2013, 12%, 2014, 15%.
06:28Here is another example of pie chart.
06:31Here, this pie chart is giving us percent of students opting for different games.
06:37Like 11% students out of total students are opting gymnastics.
06:4512% of students are opting tennis.
06:5027% of students are opting for swimming.
06:54Remember, pie chart always show how a whole is divided up.
07:00And the whole circle always show the total number of things.
07:05Like total number of students in this example.
07:09And the slices show the percentage values.
07:14So kids, today we learned about another type of data charts, which are called pie charts.
07:21Now you may go ahead and take a quiz to learn more.
07:25Bye-bye.
