00:00The U.S. women's national team got off to a perfect start at the 2024 Paris Olympics,
00:06earning a dominant 3-0 victory against Zambia on Wednesday in Nice.
00:12There were plenty of goals for the U.S., but also plenty of missed opportunities in a match
00:17where Zambia played the majority down a player.
00:21Pauline Zulu received a red card after a VAR check deemed her intentionally fouling and
00:26preventing Mallory Swanson from going through on goal.
00:31In the opening 15 minutes, the U.S. hit the crossbar in post, shots went just wide and
00:36Zambia defenders were forced to make clearances off the goal line.
00:41Trinity Rodman, who was one of the many players on the U.S. team making their Olympic debut,
00:46put all potential nerves to bed as she received a pass inside the box from captain Lindsey
00:51Horan.
00:53And used her skills to break away from two opposing defenders and slide the ball past
00:57the goalkeeper to give her team a one-goal lead.
01:02The U.S. WNT continued to create opportunities as Swanson scored two rapid goals a minute
01:07apart from each other to give her side a comfortable 3-0 lead in the first half.
01:13In the second half, the U.S. picked up right where it left off and continued to create
01:18chances while dominating possession.
01:22Despite its best efforts, the U.S. was unable to score but kept Zambia from posing any threat
01:27to its goal.
01:30The game serves as new head coach Emma Hayes' first Olympic win as a manager.
01:35''The first part of the first half was exceptional.
01:39To come out the way we did, the intention, the intensity, the decision-making, the execution,
01:45we should have had at least five, goals, at halftime,'' Hayes said.
01:50''There were things within our structures I didn't like in the first half, but that's
01:54easy fixes.''
01:57The only thing Hayes may have to worry about is the health of her starting striker Sophia
02:01Smith after she was subbed out just before the end of the first half due to injury.
02:07The U.S. sits in second place in Group B and is tied on goal differential with Germany
02:12after its 3-0 win against Australia.
02:16Zambia, meanwhile, finds itself at the bottom of the group with Australia.
02:22The USWNT will play Germany next at 3 p.m. ET on Sunday, July 27, while Zambia plays
02:29New Zealand at 1 p.m. ET on the same day.
