00:01:30Ah, there she is.
00:01:32So, Cynthia, do you have that interview with Angela lined up?
00:01:36Nearly.
00:01:37She's worth a million more sales at the newsstand.
00:01:39Well, I'm working every angle.
00:01:41Just write a hearsay article.
00:01:42Hearsay.
00:01:43Something like,
00:01:44We hear Angela's going to India and we hear she's insured her breast for fifty million
00:01:47dollars.
00:01:48I don't do that.
00:01:49Really?
00:01:51Why not because it isn't true. So later we print a retraction in the meantime
00:01:55We sell a ton of magazines, which is what we're here for
00:01:58How long do you think celebrities are gonna allow us to profile them if we're lying about them Aaron?
00:02:04Would you give us a minute, please?
00:02:08Cynthia Cynthia Cynthia I
00:02:13Am going to be honest with you how long have you been here with us a celeb magazine?
00:02:17Well, I'll be celebrating my 10-year anniversary at the end of the week
00:02:21He's a different game. Now. The stakes are higher. We have to sell more copies do whatever it takes
00:02:27And I'm just not sure you're up to it. Well be sure because I am last night. What did you do last night? I
00:02:36Was invited to an art gallery opening at the Meckler what a list celebrities were there. Well, there was
00:02:42Kirk and Elizabeth so no a-listers. You see that's just my point. You're not getting invitations to the big stuff now
00:02:48Erin on the other hand she got invited to the opening of Brad's new film as his personal guest
00:02:53I have gotten you more interviews than anybody on the staff. When was the last time you wrote a cover story?
00:02:59Four months ago George four months as a lifetime
00:03:03Erin had this month's cover and the last two look I
00:03:08The fact is I don't want to let you go
00:03:10I really don't but I do think you need a breather and that is why you are going to work for great housekeeping
00:03:18Great housekeeping. It is a fine publication a magazine that I publish along with all the others
00:03:24Of course, there is a fast track back to the big leagues
00:03:27back to celeb
00:03:30Get the interview with Angela
00:03:33Look Andrew, I think I can convince Bosley to make a very sizable contribution to Angela's favorite charity
00:03:41Well, let's just say huge
00:03:43because we here at celeb magazine believe that
00:03:46Saving the vampire fly is an extremely worthy cause as does Angela
00:03:53Promise me you'll think about it

00:07:20Oh, and you'll cut a nice view here of the wishing well, that's what I'm here to do a story on
00:07:26Oh my goodness, so that's wonderful
00:07:30You know, we used to have a lot of tourists come around here and the first thing
00:07:34You know a few people didn't get their wish. So everybody started saying well the wishing well doesn't work but around here people still believe
00:07:43What about you you ever wish for anything?
00:07:45Me no, I'm one of the lucky ones. I just go along. I'm happy with everything. Maybe you'd like to make a wish. Oh
00:07:53No, no, I'm one of the lucky ones too. I have a life that most women would only dream about
00:07:59Well now you are lucky by golly
00:08:02Well, if you need anything, please let me know. Have a nice day
00:08:15You
00:08:37Hi, I'm Cynthia
00:08:43Okay
00:08:45What were you doing I was making a wish
00:08:49Of course, what were you wishing for? It's a secret. Oh, I see
00:08:53I think the best wishes are secret. Don't you I
00:08:57guess so
00:08:59So do you think that this wishing well is gonna work? I hope so. I'm trying a lot it has rules
00:09:08What rules there are only two one is you have to really believe hmm and the other is
00:09:15You have to wish for the right wish and how do you know what the right wishes when it comes true? Oh
00:09:24Yeah, well I gotta go
00:09:39Hi
00:09:41No, just sit anywhere honey
00:09:55Need a few minutes, I'll just have a cafe au lait
00:09:58Cafe au lait sure thing. Can I ask you a question? I'm here doing a story on the wishing well. Oh, well, that's nice
00:10:06What for it's for celeb magazine Oh
00:10:11Wait, you don't know it. Well, I've seen it. It's just that the wishing well doesn't seem like a celeb kind of thing
00:10:16Well, it's actually for the sister publication called. I'm great great great housekeeping you write for great housekeeping. Oh my
00:10:25You know, my cousin had a terrible time with depression
00:10:28Like he had this dark cloud over his head all the time
00:10:31And they tried all those pills with the X's and the Z's and their names and nothing worked
00:10:36He went to the wishing well one day threw in about 85 cents
00:10:40Since then he has been the happiest person you ever saw and you think it was a wishing well, what else?
00:10:47Bye-bye. Thanks a lot. I
00:10:49Mean, it doesn't work automatically. You have to have the right wish
00:10:53Fact is the world hasn't worked in quite some time that I know. Oh, but if I were you
00:11:00I'd start over the newspaper
00:11:02They've been doing stories on the wishing well for years
00:11:05Here's your cafe
00:11:11And here's your old
00:11:19So I got him to buy a half page at the quarter page rate for one month and then it's gonna adjust
00:11:25He didn't want to do it, you know, but you can't really tell me no I
00:11:29Think it's really gonna bring in some really great revenue. Excuse me. Oh, can I help you? Yes
00:11:34I'm here to do a story in the wishing well for celeb magazine
00:11:37And I was wondering what a celeb magazine want to do a story on the wishing well for well, it's for our sister publication
00:11:44Great housekeeping and really I love great housekeeping that magazine is amazing
00:11:50Do you know what you can do with just a little bit of baking soda? Anyhow, I was wondering if I could get into your archives
00:11:57Well, I'd have to clear it with my boss first. Perfect. Could you do that quickly?
00:12:01Mark we got a question out here. Yep. Oh
00:12:12Hi, oh nice to meet me again, I'm sure
00:12:15What's the question?
00:12:17I'm doing a story on the wishing well. She works for great housekeeping
00:12:21I was wondering if I could look at your archives you do have archives
00:12:24Of course, feel free to look through them all you want professional courtesy one journalist or the other. Thank you
00:12:31Most of the stories of the last ten years are probably gonna be in our master files. Can't you use that desk unit?
00:12:35It's okay with me
00:12:37Anything older than that's probably gonna be in the stacks at the warehouse. Where's that like to ask for directions, don't you?
00:12:43It's just a nice little walk up Main Street
00:12:46Keys are in the back wall over here. Just go out the front door
00:12:49Take a right go up a couple blocks and you can't miss it. I
00:12:53Think I'll start with the computer files. Well, is there any particular angle you're looking for? I could probably save you some time
00:13:01I'll know when I see it. I'm a writer. It's just kind of the way I work. I
00:13:06Should probably get started
00:13:31I
00:13:35Let's go with Leona Jacobs 99 birthday for the leader
00:13:41Excuse me, I
00:13:44Think I need to have a look at the warehouse
00:13:47Well, you can't find your angle. Yeah
00:13:50The paper is over a hundred years old. I'm sure if you look you'll find something
00:13:54You know, maybe a famous person that's come to town
00:13:57Something like that at the door then to the right the door to the right can't miss it
00:14:05She's got a real case of the Mimi's she's all right, she just can't see what's his plane this day
00:14:10I say famous person
00:14:12She comes to get a key and misses a picture of the most famous person that's ever come to slow creek right in front
00:14:16of her face
00:14:27Afternoon hello new in town. Yes. I am. I'm just in town doing a story in the wishing
00:14:33Well used to be quite a few people come this way to look at the well and make a wish a
00:14:38lot of newspaper reporters over the years
00:14:41But it doesn't work for everyone
00:14:43Not so popular anymore. Do you believe certainly do anything you want starts by believing it can happen especially a wish
00:14:51As long as it's the right one
00:14:56Well, thank you. Goodbye
00:15:26Oh
00:15:48Hey, it's me, how's it going? I'm in a haystack looking for a needle
00:15:54sounds dirty
00:15:56It is
00:15:59Well, I hate to interrupt your misery, but I have to go oh great leave me here to suffer
00:16:12Perfect I
00:16:18See you met Napoleon
00:16:21You ought to teach him some manners. Yeah, it's the closest thing we could afford to an alarm
00:16:26Oh meaning you can turn them off
00:16:28Let's be glad you're not a rat
00:16:30Believe me. I couldn't be happier about that
00:16:37I thought I'd just come by here and see if you need some help. No, thanks. I'm fine. I
00:16:43Rarely make it out here anyway as you can tell
00:16:47Excuse me
00:16:57You
00:17:00Know I'm the fourth generation of my family to own the Chronicle my great-grandfather started it in 1887
00:17:07It's been the one constant in Slow Creek all these years
00:17:11This is a little nothing town, but we like it
00:17:17People here depend on the paper
00:17:20Gives this place an identity some history all these stories over all these years
00:17:27I'm proud of it
00:17:31Well, I will leave you and Napoleon to it, thank you
00:17:56I
00:18:26Excuse me. Yeah, can I help you? Can I use your internet connection?
00:18:55Well, I'd have to ask the boss
00:18:59Mark
00:19:00Yep, she wants to use our internet. Sure
00:19:03Having any luck? Yeah, and why didn't you tell me that Ronald Reagan had visited the wishing well?
00:19:09I mean you could have saved me a lot of dirt trouble cobwebs and frankly bird poop
00:19:15Well, the picture of Reagan is right there by the keys if you'd actually looked I asked if you wanted help and you said no
00:19:20So don't blame me for seeing what's very clear to anyone that meets you
00:19:25Which is you can't see something right in front of your own face. Uh, I don't remember asking for a lecture on journalism or anything else
00:19:31Well, you asked me why I didn't tell you and I gave you an answer. You're welcome
00:19:38Yes, Abby, I've got four things that happened in history for tomorrow's paper
00:19:43Don't need more. How about one more good one?
00:19:47Oh, hi
00:19:48Hi, are you staying? No, I'm not I'll be leaving your town as soon as I send my story. Oh, well
00:19:57back to the grind
00:20:02We met at the wishing well
00:20:18I
00:20:49I'm making your wish again
00:20:53Yeah, have to come true, huh? No
00:21:00Maybe it's not the right wish. Well, you know, one of the rules is that you have to believe I do
00:21:08Do you think it's broken I
00:21:13Don't know guess I'll try again
00:21:19Maybe your wish shouldn't be a secret
00:21:21You think maybe you should tell somebody I could tell you I guess if you're leaving
00:21:28It's still be kind of a secret
00:21:30Yeah
00:21:33I'm wishing for my dad to be happy. Oh
00:21:36I shouldn't have told you no. No, I'm glad you did. It's just your dad didn't seem unhappy when I saw him
00:21:46He does that for me
00:21:49Because he doesn't want me to see him sad, but I know because
00:21:56We don't like to talk about it
00:22:01Well, I have an idea I
00:22:03Make a wish and then at the same time you make a wish we'll see if we can get this old wishing well to work
00:22:08again, okay, but
00:22:11You have to use your own wish. Oh, okay
00:22:14You got a quarter. Yeah, I
00:22:17I wish I knew how to be happy
00:22:31Abby what Abby?
00:22:35My dad doesn't really like me hanging around making wishes here
00:22:39It's wasted time
00:22:43You're still here
00:22:45Well, I couldn't leave town without making a final wish in the famous wishing well
00:22:50Abby was kind enough to show me how it worked
00:22:53It's all on the wrist
00:22:54Yeah, well, let's let miss Tamerlane get going. I'm sure she's got a plane to catch back to New York

00:30:54Well, okay, but if you ever need to talk, I'm here pretty much all the time
00:31:00Would you like to start a tab a wife start a tab see most people they pay at the end of the month it saves
00:31:06Time and all those pesky individuals. I I I don't know. Well, I got the best food in town
00:31:11I'm sure that's true. But I don't plan on staying very long. I'll just pay as I go. Well, that's fine, too
00:31:18In fact just the coffee is good whenever you're ready
00:31:30There you go, honey, thank you, you're welcome Steve
00:31:35Can I get you guys
00:31:43Donette yes, honey. I think I'll start that town. Well, that's fine, too
00:31:53Hey John big this timeline. Yes. You got a minute. I
00:31:59I
00:32:02Called over at the newspaper office and you weren't there. So I kind of figured you'd be here
00:32:07Okay, so you found me. Oh, well, I thought you'd like to know that
00:32:13The check that you gave me yesterday at the bank just called and said that it was insufficient funds. What what check?
00:32:21The check for the first week's rent on the room
00:32:23I I didn't write a check and if I had written a check it wouldn't have bounced do you?
00:32:29Do you know how much money I make I work for a celeb magazine. I don't have money problems. Okay, please
00:32:35I don't mean to upset you. I'm sure it must be a misunderstanding
00:32:38It must be but this I can I can float you for a while float me
00:32:43well, you know, you're brand new here in town and and
00:32:47Mark did vouch for you. Oh mark vouched for me. Yes said you're going to work for him today
00:32:54That's good that there you go nothing to worry about I'll see you later
00:33:02God
00:33:11I'll pick up some of this slack. It's my fault that we're shorthanded school board appointment piece is ready
00:33:17Where are we with the meteor shower story? It'll be ready tomorrow. Great. We'll pencil it in for the leader on Friday
00:33:22It's gonna be beautiful. I guess there's been some confusion
00:33:27Can I see you for a moment? You're seeing me now
00:33:30in your office
00:33:33To be continued
00:33:37You're ready to work because confusion is not on the calendar and we can really use some help around here
00:33:41Yes, but I was wondering if you might reiterate my salary considerations
00:33:53A new reporter standard
00:33:57It it's what we talked about on the phone
00:33:59Yeah
00:34:00but it's so you come into my office this morning you talk a bunch of gibberish and then you leave and then you come back and
00:34:05In the meantime big Jim comes here and he asked if you're working for the paper and I tell him you are which I really don't
00:34:10Understand why I did but the question remains you want the job or not
00:34:13Do you remember meeting me yesterday?
00:34:14Cuz people in this town depend on this paper and what we need are dependable people to work for it
00:34:19I asked you for direction and around here. We all do everything. We answer the phone. We do the reporting we compose the layouts
00:34:26We also sell ad space. I use the archives. We have a lot of work to do and we really don't have any time to waste
00:34:31I went to the warehouse going once
00:34:34Going twice. Yes. Yes. I want the job
00:34:38Good, I think
00:34:41Like I said, your first assignment is Martin's sixth funeral. It's tomorrow morning
00:34:49I
00:34:55Just stop and think how lucky we are
00:34:58lucky
00:35:01I'm home. I
00:35:03Can't believe it. I'm home
00:35:05It was a dream. Oh a nightmare
00:35:09Had airline food and lack of sleep and Rachel's here. Of course. I'm home. Thank goodness
00:35:15This doesn't make any sense no sense at all Tyson works for me. He's my friend
00:35:24Wait is he
00:35:26Is he really my friend?
00:35:28Are any of them really my friend?
00:35:32Do they look out for what's best for me?
00:35:36Really my home. What is this? This is not me. This is not my life
00:35:44I
00:36:14I
00:36:16I
00:36:18Oh
00:36:42Mr. Sext was a man a few friends
00:36:45Those few who knew him perhaps Mary Williams
00:36:48Knew him the best
00:36:50She would like to say a few words before we convey. Mr. Martin six to his final resting place Mary
00:37:06My father first met Martin six a few years after the Korean War
00:37:10They didn't know it at the time, but both had been wounded at the Battle of Porkchop Hill
00:37:16In fact, they both almost died there
00:37:18Dad said that when he and Martin finally did meet Martin told him he had no family and no money and no place to live
00:37:26And all Martin wanted was to be able to stay in our shed out back
00:37:30just for a while till he got back on his feet and
00:37:34Dad said he could but there wasn't much out there
00:37:37No hot water just a hose bib and a bare bulb hanging down and Martin said that's okay
00:37:45Cuz I don't need very much
00:37:49So they made a deal and they shook on it
00:37:53Martin would pay $12 a month for as long as he wanted to stay there
00:37:58Growing up. I remember we didn't see very much of Martin. He kept to himself mostly
00:38:03Then later, of course
00:38:04I got married and moved out and started a family of my own
00:38:08Then after dad died in 93 and mom followed in 98 we rented out the main house
00:38:14But what do you know?
00:38:16Martin six was still living in the shed out back
00:38:20Still paying $12 on the first of each month. He never missed
00:38:25not once
00:38:27He and my father had made a deal and they both lived up to it
00:38:33Well, naturally I felt that it was my job to continue to honor that deal so now Martin is gone
00:38:41And the sad thing is I don't know much more about him than what I've already told you
00:38:47In fact, most of the town hardly even knew he existed. I
00:38:52Do know that he did some woodworking for people and they were happy with that
00:38:56And
00:38:58He paid his rent on time like he said he would
00:39:02Because Martin Sixth was a man of his word
00:39:06And that counts for something. I
00:39:09Felt the least I could do was give him a decent burial
00:39:13Right dad
00:39:16He's smiling there you have it
00:39:22That was Martin Sixth
00:39:26You
00:39:33We're going to take the casket out now
00:39:56Excuse me. Yes, we're short a pallbearer today. We were wondering if you could oblige us
00:40:05Thank you
00:40:08You're not going out to the cemetery, are you Mary? No, no, I got a doctor's appointment
00:40:13Well, we don't have to meet our maker by ourselves
00:40:16I'll say a prayer for you Sunday Martin
00:40:19That's very kind of you Reverend
00:40:25You
00:40:35Hello Enid hello
00:40:41Hello Abby, right? Yes
00:40:47Have we met before don't you remember the wishing oh
00:40:51No, we've never met you're right. Oh
00:40:56Okay
00:40:57Well, I'm Abby. My dad owns the paper. It's nice to meet you. Abby. My dad owns the paper
00:41:05He's on assignment right now. Oh
00:41:08I'm working on my the stain history column
00:41:12Looks great. Thanks. I am gonna go back to my desk. Okay
00:41:22You
00:41:27Everything okay, honey
00:41:29Very good
00:41:30And I'd like a glass of pinot noir me too. But all I got is plain red. Well, that'll do
00:41:36Well, I'll just bring it right over room at the end comfy
00:41:40It's fine
00:41:43Big Jim is my ex. I always like to make sure he's doing a good job. No complaints. Really? Well, I had plenty
00:41:50You have a problem you just let me know because he'd do anything to shut me up well do
00:42:01May I
00:42:02of course I
00:42:04Want to talk to you about the article on Martin six funeral? Yes. What about it simple truth?
00:42:10It's not all there what well, do you miss the essence of what this is all about? Um
00:42:15You giving me writing tips. Do you know the cover stories? I've written
00:42:20I'm sorry
00:42:23It's not about your writing style, that's fine. It's about substance. That's what you're missing
00:42:29Okay, look Martin six life was no less valuable than anybody else's sure
00:42:34He was private and he was quiet, but he had honor and dignity, right?
00:42:38Well, he wasn't famous, but there was something about his life. That was good and we can all benefit from it
00:42:43He kept his word. I
00:42:45understand
00:42:48Get the rewrite done as soon as possible. I'm saving room on page two tomorrow's edition. Okay, definitely
00:42:55Look, um, I'm not normally so hard on people that I work with but you're good. You could just be better
00:43:03The office will be open all evening
00:43:09Mark your food's ready. Thank you done it
00:43:18You
00:43:30Hi, hi
00:43:39Good night, daddy. Good night, baby. Good night, Cynthia. Good night, Abby
00:43:48I
00:43:51Love Chronicle
00:43:54Mr. Upshaw from the Vernon newspaper syndicate. No. No, he's not here right now
00:44:01You're right. He does stay and work late sometimes
00:44:06Hang on let me get a pen
00:44:08Okay
00:44:10You want me to tell him that the offer won't be on the table forever and that if he's smart
00:44:17He'll take it. Oh
00:44:20Don't write that. Oh, he should just know that
00:44:26Okay, I'll give him the message, thank you
00:44:47And
00:44:53She'd rather be here with me than with a babysitter all the time
00:44:57We lost her mother when she was two. I
00:45:00Think she misses what she never had. I'm sorry. That's okay. We have a good time
00:45:03She likes it. It's kind of like camping out except except she's not camping and she's not out exactly
00:45:09but
00:45:10We'll go home as soon as I get this paper put to bed. I think it's nice. I did too
00:45:17Oh
00:45:42Miss Taverline, this is what I call literature
00:45:47Oh
00:45:53Hey mark, hey Cindy, I got your next assignment. Okay, my next assignment
00:45:58Yeah, I get down to the police station to talk to a little Jim. Got it
00:46:13Thank you
00:46:18Hi, I'm looking for the police chief, I'm the chief but people call me a little Jim. I'm Big Jim son. Oh
00:46:26Cynthia Tamerline from celeb
00:46:29The Chronicle and you're here for the blotter
00:46:32Yeah
00:46:34Well in the last couple of days, we've been out on a barking dog
00:46:38And a dog who was Howlin and another barking dog that turned out to be the same barking dog as the first dog
00:46:45That's three incidents
00:46:47That it
00:46:49We got a call from mrs. Mullins that mr
00:46:52Mullins was staying too long at CJ's bar and she wanted him to come home. So she called you
00:46:57It's my auntie and my uncle wasn't answering his cell phone
00:47:02But I'd rather you not print that Big Jim doesn't know
00:47:09It's our secret, thanks. Well, see you next time
00:47:18Hey, little Jim, where are you going?
00:47:20I'm talking to you
00:47:22Little Jim
00:47:24Listen there's a parking meter on the corner that's out of order
00:47:29Well, it's taking people's money and it's not giving them any time on the meter
00:47:35That's theft
00:47:38People are being robbed
00:47:40And what are the police doing about it? Nothing. Absolutely. Nothing. It's outrageous
00:47:45Understand why I wouldn't give a hoot about that. I just oh
00:47:49I know who you are. You're Cynthia Tamerlain, right?
00:47:54Yes, look, I'm sorry if I read your article this morning on Martin six
00:47:59I'd like to pay you a compliment
00:48:01It was beautiful and so true my article you really captured him Martin would have been very appreciative
00:48:09He loves the Chronicle. He's read it every day from cover to cover
00:48:13Well, most people in this town do
00:48:16anyway
00:48:17Thank you
00:48:19Thank thank you
00:48:23Feeling good about it. I think I'm ready to start it. I know
00:48:42Still remind me of all the things I know I learned along the way
00:48:51Cuz in the end it really comes down to you
00:48:58In the end your life becomes what you choose to do
00:49:13No
00:49:20My life nothing good stop me deal with Cynthia
00:49:35In the end
00:49:42I
00:50:13I
00:50:22Hey Rach, it's me. Why aren't you taking my calls? I really need to talk to you
00:50:28Can you please call me back as soon as you can it's very important that I talk to you, okay
00:50:43Making a wish I
00:50:48Keep wishing
00:50:51But I wonder if it's ever gonna happen
00:50:54Are you sad? Yeah, I guess I am I
00:50:59understand
00:51:01My dad is sad too. Why is he sad because my mommy died. I know I'm sorry
00:51:06Sometimes at night, I'll hear something and I go see what it is
00:51:12That's daddy and he's crying
00:51:16I don't know what to do. I mean, I'll help him as much as I can at the paper
00:51:21He works so hard. I'm sure he appreciates all your help. Yeah, but it's not enough
00:51:27No, it's not
00:51:29And that makes me sad
00:51:32Everybody gets sad
00:51:34Everybody gets sad
00:51:37You know what I do when I get sad
00:51:39I treat myself to makeover
00:51:42And I'm thinking both you and I deserve a makeover
00:51:47Yes, really, come on
00:51:49Like I said mark, I'd like to help but those funds are committed for city services
00:51:54Well, the paper is important to the city. Also. Hey, no argument there my friend
00:52:00Hey dad
00:52:01Cindy's gonna give me a makeover so we won't be sad anymore. Just a little fun. Okay. Have a good time
00:52:10You got a cutie there boy, it's just like your mom well make that shot let's see you
00:52:15That tickles
00:52:17We'll wait until you get older and you have to start plucking your eyebrows
00:52:22That is not so fun
00:52:24You tear out your eyebrow hair. That's right. Doesn't it hurt? Well, sometimes beauty means sacrifice
00:52:30Well, I'm gonna let my girl and come there really nicely
00:52:35That could work. You could even braid them and turn it into a fashion trend. That's silly
00:52:44It's just what it's like to have a mommy
00:52:48Well, yeah, yeah someone to have fun with and learn things from and
00:52:55Go shopping with I mean, I still do all those things with my mom. That sounds nice
00:53:00Wow, you still have your mom
00:53:04You're lucky
00:53:07Come in
00:53:11Well
00:53:12Don't you look beautiful? She's a natural beauty. Yeah, I'm a natural beauty
00:53:17Well, my natural beauty, why don't we get out of Cynthia's room so she can get some rest? Okay
00:53:23What do you say? Thanks Cynthia. It was my pleasure
00:53:28Thank you
00:53:30See you tomorrow. Yes. Good night. Good night
00:53:39Mark I
00:53:43I
00:53:45Was wondering if you wanted me to write another story
00:53:48Yeah, actually I was thinking about doing something on Keeney James lighter collection
00:53:53Lighter collection. Yeah, he's this guy who has a bunch of cigarette lighters, right? Right. Okay. I want you to know that
00:54:02You're doing a lot of really great work you think absolutely then why all the blue line notes
00:54:11To help you be as great as I know you can be then you'll be happy
00:54:18Let's go kiddo
00:54:22You
00:54:53She's nice Cynthia, I think so, too
00:54:59Is she like mom used to be?
00:55:01No, nobody's like mommy used to be she's one of a kind. Is there such a thing as two of a kind?
00:55:07No, could there be another of a kind? I don't know. You're asking some hard questions here. What are you a reporter?
00:55:14This
00:55:21One they used to give away with cigarettes called blue devils to soldiers going into the war in the early 1940s, that's interesting
00:55:28What's your most valuable one?
00:55:34Guy offered me $2,000 for it. Why didn't you take it? Well, that's just money
00:55:40I've spent my whole life accumulating these
00:55:43Of course, sometimes I play a little game and I try to see how many I can light in like 30 seconds
00:55:50I bet that's fun. 21 would be a new record
00:55:53I'm thinking about going for it
00:55:55Then I'd be famous
00:55:58Good night
00:56:02You're back in Kenny's yes
00:56:05Quite a collection. Yeah, he's a bit eccentric
00:56:08That's putting it mildly hey you want to hear something weird about Kenny there's more he doesn't smoke
00:56:22Hello Cynthia, I need you to get to Kenny James house at Kenny James house. Yeah, I'll meet you there. Thanks
00:56:37It's a pressure on here turn it off. Hey, are you okay? I'm all right fell down what I got outside. I hurt my ankle
00:56:49What happened I
00:56:51Set the new ladder lighting record had 21 of them going at once
00:56:55Then I noticed the first one has got to near the curtains went up like that got some water
00:57:00So that's what I thought it was
00:57:03Do it on the curtains
00:57:04Turned out it was vodka. I'm afraid it's total loss Kenny
00:57:08With the smoke and the fire inside and the water having to pour on it. It's all right, Charlie. It was my fault
00:57:13How's your insurance headed up into last year, but I lost my job in Springboro
00:57:21Let's take you to emergency have a look you over
00:57:24Oh
00:57:31Sorry, I had to take Abby to Don Mets what happened he paid his price for fame
00:57:37Look, you wrote a terrific article on key. Yeah, but we can't run it
00:57:40But I can hold the printers while we write an addendum to your article. We have something here a breaking story
00:57:45No, that'll take too long. It'll be tight. But if we work together we can make this happen
00:57:53I
00:58:23I
00:58:43Good morning. Nice work. She did a good job, huh?
00:58:48Mm-hmm
00:58:51Hey great article you're turning out to be a first-rate writer
00:58:56Well, thanks, but it was mostly mark. All right. Got your next assignment City Council meeting at noon
00:59:05Keeney
00:59:08Keeney
00:59:09Are you all right? Sure. I
00:59:12Want to thank you for what you wrote about me. It was special
00:59:16I don't have my collection or my house anymore, but I got your article
00:59:24Things will get better. Oh, I got you. They they can't get much worse
00:59:32So my recommendation is that we vote for a new levy for the reservoir
00:59:39John me
00:59:41Now this levy was built in
00:59:431927
00:59:45by our predecessors
00:59:46So I think we owe it to the future generations of Slow Creek that they receive good water and plenty of it
00:59:54So I vote that we get funds for it. I second the motion
00:59:59Uh-huh. So now let's call the vote all those in favor
01:00:05All opposed
01:00:07All right, the motion is passed
01:00:09All right, do we have any any new business may I ask a question well go ahead
01:00:21Keeney lost everything in the fire his lighter collection his house everything
01:00:27And I was just wondering
01:00:29If there was something we could do to help him. He was an idiot. He was always an idiot
01:00:35That's true Nelbert, but he's our idiot and now he's lost everything what is wrong with you Nelbert
01:00:41You know the commonly house big Jim
01:00:44Town owns that right? Oh, what's on your mind little Jim? I say we lease it to him cheap and he fixes it up
01:00:50well now
01:00:52Do I hear a motion to that effect?
01:00:55May I you may?
01:01:05I
01:01:07Chronicle
01:01:10Yes, the meteor shower is tonight it's gonna be on full display in the southern sky
01:01:15I thought you said the loan would be approved. No, I don't have any more collateral
01:01:21No, I don't understand. Look I need you to understand that. I don't know how to make this paper run without it
01:01:26I
01:01:31Hi at the City Council meeting, yes
01:01:34Anything good? Uh, they voted to let Keeney have the old Connolly place. I bet your article helped
01:01:41Maybe I hope so. Thank you
01:01:44So what's my next assignment? Look, why don't you take a break go to Don dad's have a coffee. I'll let you know. Okay
01:01:56You
01:01:58You
01:02:21Going tonight where does the meteor shower?
01:02:25Most people are gonna see it from Grubbers field because it's got the clearest view to the south
01:02:29Well, I hadn't planned on it. Oh, you have to it's gonna be so beautiful and there hasn't been one here since
01:02:361935. Oh, I don't know you're going with me and I don't take no for an answer. You'll love it and and mark
01:02:42He's sure to be there
01:02:44What does that have to do with anything? Oh
01:02:48Except everything unless I'm wrong, which I'm not ever he's
01:02:53Kind of
01:02:56He's a very good person Oh good person
01:03:02Well, I like that that's funny what same thing he said about you
01:03:13It's gonna start right up there no, no, it's that way right up there buddy right up there that's ready come on
01:03:19No, no, the weatherman says south of town what's up? Are you kidding?
01:03:23I said south south south this is where it's gonna be my boy right there
01:03:32Quite a turnout
01:03:34sure
01:03:35People see a big thing like this. It reminds them of how large the heavens are and how
01:03:41Little time we have on this earth to do what we're supposed to do
01:03:45Hmm what are we supposed to do make the most of what we are
01:03:51Welcome love when we find it and be happy. Oh, is that all?
01:03:56Honey, that's not only all that's everything guys. I see you're like the mayor
01:04:01Oh, well, that's what happens when you were married to the mayor for a while a lot of people owe you money for food
01:04:08Hey
01:04:09Well, you have Cynthia here sure did. Hi. This is Cynthia Tamlin. She wrote that article in Kenny for the Chronicle
01:04:16You really got Kenny down. Well, thank you. Thank you very much. You have a nice evening that you tuned over
01:04:25He's a phenomenal editor, he's also made me a better writer. Well, he thinks you're naturally talented, huh?
01:04:32You know the funny thing is I've always wanted to be a great writer
01:04:38Since I started out at the magazine I I
01:04:42Never stopped to say what am I writing? Could I be?
01:04:47What do I want?
01:04:49Well, honey, you know, I can't think of a single person that can change the past but the future
01:04:56That's still up in the air
01:04:58Oh
01:05:04I don't know. Oh go ahead. I gotta sit with big Jim and the family
01:05:08Well, they owe me more than anybody in this town and this is my opportunity to connect
01:05:16That's why my dad
01:05:21Hey glad you can make it
01:05:24You can have my seat I've got this one here, baby. Thanks
01:05:34Everybody's talking about the whole Kenny thing. I'm just glad everything's gonna work out for him
01:05:38Yeah, well, it wouldn't have happened if it weren't for you. Well, you had a lot to do with it, too
01:05:44My point is
01:05:48And I really want you to remember this
01:05:51No matter what happens
01:05:55You're a really good writer
01:05:58You get your stride you could pretty much go anywhere you want it and do well sounds ominous. Well, I
01:06:04Should probably tell you this because you are gonna be affected by it. What tomorrow a
01:06:10Man named mr. Upshaw is coming to town to buy the Chronicle
01:06:14He owns Vernon newspapers. It's a syndicate of smaller papers that he's bought up usually because they were struggling
01:06:20It's who's been calling. He's been after me for a while. Are you gonna sell?
01:06:24I have to face reality
01:06:26It's not like the Chronicle is a money-making operation
01:06:29On a good year we break even
01:06:32And we haven't had a good year for a while
01:06:36It's too bad, you know stories like Keeney's that make this even worse. I don't understand Upshaw's operation
01:06:42It puts out a generic paper
01:06:45There's almost no local news
01:06:47And they buy national and international stories and just repackage them the strength of the Chronicle and papers like it is that they're the fabric of
01:06:54the town
01:06:55And they give a place like Slow Creek and identity. It's exactly why my great-grandfather started it in the first place. I
01:07:01Figure that they'll probably just make it a one-person office, you know being it most likely
01:07:06Should be there to keep the doors open
01:07:08You're not gonna be there
01:07:09Not the kind of place that one of it, but you love that paper
01:07:12I do but now I'll be able to pay off the whole slew of debts
01:07:16I'll be able to have some insurance for her future
01:07:20You know, what's funny is that when I was younger, I hated the paper
01:07:25So I got out of town went to Chicago
01:07:29Got on staff at the Herald and I did pretty well. I got promoted to the city desk. I
01:07:36Was in line for a department editor really and then I suddenly found myself as a single parent
01:07:42So
01:07:45We came back home I took over the paper for my dad
01:07:51At first it was really hard
01:07:54Eventually I started to love it. It's a really good job
01:07:59Look at this. Oh, no, he's starting
01:08:11Oh
01:08:42Oh
01:08:45Well, all right, see you at the house
01:08:53There you are, oh
01:09:00Well
01:09:01Hey, I have an idea. Why don't I take Abby for a little while to my house where there's a blueberry pie?
01:09:08It's tasty. What do you say? That sounds nice. I like blueberry pie
01:09:15Maybe you and I can do something. I'd love to
01:09:29Done a really great job with Abby. She's a wonderful girl
01:09:33Thanks. We have our moments, but she's turned out pretty good
01:09:37Done most of it on our own lucky for me. Well still it had to be really hard
01:09:43Times
01:09:47I'm really sorry for your job at the newspaper
01:09:50You don't have to apologize
01:09:53Like you said I could get a job anywhere else
01:09:55Am I selling out? I think you're doing what you have to do. I just feel like I'm betraying my dad and his dad
01:10:04And I just seems wrong
01:10:07You know, you could always try the wishing well, I wish I believed in it. Well, that is one of the rules
01:10:13Believing was that so? Yeah
01:10:17And also having the right wish. How do you know when it's the right wish?
01:10:21When it comes true, I believe Abby has gotten to you. She has
01:10:27And so have you
01:10:32This whole place
01:10:36You
01:10:51Hey, thanks again, it's my pleasure and believe me it has been a very long time since I've said that to anyone
01:11:07I
01:11:12Maybe I shouldn't believe in miracles. I never thought I would want to kiss a woman like that again
01:11:19What's funny
01:11:21No, it's just the thing is the guy once said to me I couldn't see what was in front of my face
01:11:29Maybe now I can
01:11:37Better okay. Well, I go get Abby. Yeah
01:11:46Good night
01:12:06I
01:12:37Did you make
01:12:57Hello, I'm mr. Upshaw and you are Enid Enid
01:13:07And who is this
01:13:09This is Cynthia Cynthia
01:13:13Mr. Jones is running Mark's in his office
01:13:18mark
01:13:19They're here
01:13:23Hi Mark Jansen
01:13:25Yes, of course
01:13:26Well, shall we go to my office? Yes, this shouldn't take long. We've gone up all the papers
01:13:36I
01:13:42Never thought I'd see the day
01:13:45Mark said he thought they'd keep you to stay and run the office
01:13:50fat chance
01:13:51If he goes I go let them find their own idiot to do whatever it is. They do and call it a newspaper what?
01:14:00Enid I need to talk to mark. He's busy
01:14:03Hi
01:14:05Hi Abby
01:14:07Well, I really need to talk to him right away
01:14:10Look Mary if this is some complaint about the newspaper, you can just say no
01:14:13It's not a complaint. This newspaper is about to have a new owner in a matter of minutes
01:14:18Well, then he's really gonna want to talk to me Mary. What's happened?
01:14:23As you can see we've made it very simple for you
01:14:29Well, you've made it simple for yourself, let's be honest
01:14:32I'm not here to force you. You called me remember
01:14:54Mark Mark wait
01:14:57What did you sign anything yet? No, oh daddy, you've got to hear this what mark come over here you have to see this
01:15:07What is it this is the last will and testament of Martin six Martin had a will I know I couldn't believe it myself
01:15:16But we went to his shed where he lived for 60 years and paid $12 a month and there it was
01:15:20It's notarized and everything legal and all
01:15:23So a man had a will what's that got to do with finishing this sale? Well, if you'll be quiet, I'll tell you what
01:15:33Because Martin page is $12 a month for 60 years
01:15:37He managed to save virtually all of his money
01:15:39Which turns out to be quite a pile if you consider the interest in such and he's left it all to the slow Creek Chronicle
01:15:46As long as ownership of the paper remains exactly as it is. I knew he loved the Chronicle. I guess someone's wish came true
01:15:56We're saved
01:16:17You
01:16:29Ladies and gentlemen, we're beginning our final approach into New York. Please put your chair backs in the upright position
