00:00Long live Mother India!
00:08I felt like the world was ending.
00:14It felt like it was the end of the world.
00:17I don't have anyone of my own.
00:20Every year on July 26, Kargil Day is celebrated.
00:23I am at the Kargil apartment where the day is celebrated.
00:28We have a person with us.
00:30Let's ask him how he remembers Kargil.
00:34Jai Hind!
00:37Thank you for coming to Kargil Society.
00:43My name is Major Ashok Sharma.
00:45I was the battery commander of the 244 Heavy Motor Regiment in Daras.
00:50I went to Kargil with 2 Rajputana Rifles in the 3 Pimples War.
00:56I have been living here for 25 years.
01:00I have a lot of memories with Kargil and Kargil Society.
01:05First, I will talk about the Kargil War.
01:09I am a 3rd generation Army officer.
01:12My father and grandfather were from the artillery department.
01:15My son was an Army doctor.
01:18I went to Kargil a year before the Kargil War in 1998.
01:23I had a permanent deployment there.
01:25I have seen the Kargil War from day one.
01:28I went to the real war on May 7 with my cannons and heavy motors.
01:33I would like to tell you that the Heavy Motor Regiment has a shell, a bomb.
01:37It is the heaviest bomb of 60 kgs.
01:40You can guess how much gunpowder is in it.
01:42When we started the war in Kargil,
01:45we were not ready for this war for a simple reason.
01:51Because the Indian Army and our policies are not aggressive.
01:58We are peaceful people.
02:00We don't do anything until someone steps on our tail.
02:04But the day someone steps on our tail, we don't leave him.
02:08In the beginning, we had no idea that the Pakistanis would come in the guise of spies.
02:15They would not come in the uniform of the Pakistanis.
02:18They would come in the uniform of the Indian Army.
02:21They came to Tololing, Tiger Hill, Batra Hill, Kaksar Sector, Kargil Sector, Batalik Sector.
02:30The spies came to small areas of 151 km.
02:34They captured the mountains.
02:37It was not easy to clear 151 km.
02:40We needed a lot of planning and a lot of movement.
02:43For this, our army started to build up slowly.
02:46From the first week of May, we started building up.
02:49In June, we did the first Tololing in the mountains of Dara Sector.
02:52We achieved success there.
02:54After that success, by the grace of God and with your good support,
03:00we cleared Kargil on 4th July.
03:04On 26th July, we celebrate this victory day.
03:07My husband's name is Gannar Shivji Singh Naik.
03:12He was in the government.
03:15He was a postman in Pohara.
03:18He helped us.
03:21We were in Delhi.
03:23At that time, our children were very small.
03:27At that time, we felt that our world was destroyed.
03:33It was dark.
03:36We did not have anyone.
03:40But maybe it was God's grace.
03:48I was in the Kargil War in the 4th Jatt with my unit.
03:53We went to the Bajrang post.
03:57We attacked the troops of Captain Saurabh Kaliya.
04:01We were injured.
04:04We won half of the post.
04:07We had to retreat because we had more casualties.
04:11Later, our unit vacated the post.
04:14I was injured and was taken to the hospital.
04:16How many days were you in the hospital?
04:18I was in the hospital for two years.
04:20I can see a picture.
04:22This is my father.
04:24He was martyred in Sri Lanka on November 18, 1989.
04:27He was in the 4th Jatt.
04:29He was martyred in Shanti Sena.
