00:00I can just picture Ryan Reynolds at the factory being like, OK, but what if like you can feel his tongue as you're putting your hand in for not enough texture on the can we can we add more like rivets to the tongue?
00:13Tiffany Taylor for The Hollywood Reporter here at San Diego Comic-Con 2024.
00:17And I'm joined by Sholomarie when, yeah, I thought I was going to say your name.
00:22And Jacob's got Thomas Bertrand.
00:25And we're talking all things Cobra Kai and Lone Lobos, your podcast.
00:28That's right. Which you just did a live episode of here today, right?
00:32Yeah, just got finished doing everything for the podcast.
00:35I feel like we yeah, we just we tried a whole bunch of new mediums.
00:39We usually just sit down and do the pod.
00:41But today we're here at the con, of course.
00:42So we had to do a little walk around, you know.
00:45What was that experience like? Tell me more about it.
00:47Overwhelming, of course.
00:48There's like a hundred thousand people here.
00:50It must be. It was it was really cute, but sad.
00:52There was a kid that threw up out of excitement, out of excitement.
00:55He got so excited. He threw up.
00:57Jacob and I, he threw up.
00:58So that was definitely a highlight.
01:00Sholomarie gave him his Blue Beetle hat because he was like, I love Cobra Kai
01:04and Blue Beetle. He was like eight.
01:05He's like Blue Beetle changed my life.
01:06And Sholomarie was like, hey, man, I'm designing these hats.
01:08This is a one on one and put it on him.
01:10And I was like, oh, God, he's going to throw up again.
01:13Oh, no. He started crying.
01:14I was like, his older brother's like, buddy, it's cool.
01:17It's cool, buddy. You're going to live.
01:19It was really sweet. It's been a great time.
01:20Yeah, we we really like Comic-Con.
01:22And it's been our first time back in a couple of years.
01:24Yeah, last time I was here was 2018.
01:27Was that the first time you guys were here?
01:29What's your first Comic-Con memory?
01:31My mom is a big comic head.
01:33I started coming here like before middle school and I came every year.
01:37And then finally, when we got to do Cobra Kai and come here for that,
01:40it was like a whole other experience because I got to do a panel and,
01:43you know, the Hollywood Reporter and stuff like this.
01:47So it's definitely a different vibe.
01:48But I hope we get to come back and do more.
01:51Like I want to stay longer, hopefully.
01:52Yeah, we're we're here for one day.
01:55And, you know, the first time I came was I was in high school
01:58and I came with Shola and his buddy, Anthony.
02:00And it was so much fun just being a fan,
02:02taking their scooters and riding around San Diego.
02:04And so walking on the floor today,
02:08it's torture because I'm like, I want to go get the Tamagotchis.
02:13But it's fun. It's super fun.
02:14It's very fun to get it, to see it from this angle.
02:18Not have to wait in line to get into the building is nice.
02:21And we're doing promo for Cobra Kai season six.
02:22And we're doing promo for Cobra Kai season six.
02:24It's finally out. Yeah.
02:26Now, speaking of the season, how does it feel that it's finally out?
02:28And what is the fan response been like to the first five episodes so far?
02:32It's been surprisingly positive.
02:34And I don't want to say surprising just because
02:37our show feels so fun to film already that sometimes I'm like,
02:40oh, I don't know if people are going to, but everyone buys into it.
02:44Like it's it has this inherent sense of goofiness and unseriousness that
02:48I think is just so perfect.
02:50And I'm so glad that people are loving it this year.
02:52Yeah, I think it's fun to see everyone is down to suspend their disbelief to
02:57they're like, yeah, this is a karate is life thing in the valley.
03:01Yeah, that is it is so important.
03:03People are willing to die for this.
03:04You know, that's super fun.
03:07It feels weird to be done.
03:09The fan response, I think, has been really funny.
03:11I'll I'll go through the comments every once in a while when I have Instagram.
03:14And it's just so great to see.
03:16Yeah, exactly. That's right.
03:18Robbie should be captain.
03:20People like, no, it started with McGill.
03:22It should end with McGill.
03:25There's too many.
03:26I love the discourse.
03:27And then, you know, there's a few people that like Demetrius, the sleeper hit.
03:31He's going to win it all.
03:32Kenny, whoever.
03:33But it's it's been to get to do a show for six years.
03:36It's like, I don't know when we're going to get this opportunity again.
03:40So I just hope that we get to relish in the moment and really just enjoy it all.
03:45You got to film some parts in Spain, is that right?
03:48Because that's where you go for the big competition.
03:50Yeah, yeah, yeah.
03:50So so the Sakai Taikai takes place in Barcelona.
03:54Funny enough, Billy didn't know that it was actually pronounced Barcelona.
03:58So we get out there and people are pronouncing it like that.
04:00And he's like, what?
04:02Wait, you guys are.
04:03He's like, what's wrong with you?
04:04He's like, wait.
04:06But we got to go out there really, really put into perspective.
04:10It was our first time filming out in public.
04:12Like sometimes we've filmed out on a like outdoors, but it's closed off, of course.
04:16But this one, we were just at museums with people yelling out like,
04:19Daniel, we love you, Daniel.
04:23And it was real, real surreal.
04:26And it really, I think, also helps bring our show to like another cinematic level,
04:31getting to travel and show off, you know, around the world.
04:34I'm sure you probably can't tease too much about what's to come.
04:37But from what you can say, can you share what you're excited for fans to see
04:40in part two that's coming out in the fall?
04:42I'm excited for people to see the many more deaths to come.
04:47Yeah, there's yeah, there is bloodshed.
04:50Bloodshed. Up the wazoo.
04:52If you thought this was a joke around show, you're wrong.
04:55This is about to be the most bonkers.
04:58People find out.
05:00People find out real hard.
05:01Oh, OK. I don't know what he's referring to, but.
05:04Because if you mess around, you find out.
05:08That's right. F around and find out.
05:10You just finished filming a few months ago, right?
05:13Part three. So now you're totally done with the show when it all ended.
05:16What was the emotion on set like for you?
05:19Just kind of confusing.
05:22In the best way, like, oh, it's over, really?
05:26Like it is. Yeah.
05:28Just sad, but also happy.
05:30But it's never over with Cobra Kai.
05:31We like we wrapped two weeks later.
05:33We're doing promos two weeks later. We're doing the premiere.
05:36You know, so we're we're getting to spend time with each other.
05:39I see Jacob damn near every week for the podcast.
05:41So so we're not going anywhere.
05:43Yeah, it's my last day was a faux last day on set.
05:46I got told, you know, this is your last day.
05:49You know, me and Gianni doing a scene together.
05:51We're dancing. You know, it's emotional.
05:53Like, oh, you guys are wrapped. Oh, my God.
05:55And then I get told, oh, actually, we're pulling you in for second unit.
05:58We're going to see your back.
06:00They're like, we're going to see your back.
06:01So you need to stand over there, OK?
06:03Now you're really wrapped. Yeah.
06:05I was like, oh, cool.
06:06Yeah. Skeleton crew was like, OK, cool.
06:09You know, we see each other all the time.
06:11So it doesn't feel like we're going to miss the crew the most.
06:14Yeah, it's not often that you go a whole crew of people
06:19who are willing to, like, really bend over backwards to make the show as good
06:22as it is. And it's nothing.
06:24It's nothing without them.
06:25So I just hope that once we get to start producing our own stuff,
06:28like we can we can bring them all on board.
06:30That's right, Kevin Bird.
06:31Just call be like a D sound costumes.
06:34But yeah, I love how the description for your podcast calls you guys
06:39on and off screen, best friends.
06:40And even just talking to you now, it's so clear to see how close you guys are.
06:43Take me back to how this friendship first started.
06:46It started in the cafeteria room for Cobra Kai.
06:48I'd never I didn't even know Jacob existed.
06:50Jacob didn't know I existed, although we were around the same age.
06:54I guess we just were going out for the different Mexican roles.
06:58Yeah. You were going for one half of Mexican.
07:00I was going for the other half.
07:00Going for the serious ones.
07:02I was going to the serious.
07:04Yeah, that's right.
07:05But we met and instantly kind of just clicked.
07:08I was just learning to get to drive.
07:10And Jacob had already had his license.
07:12I got my first car during the first season.
07:14So I just remember
07:17playing Pokemon Go, driving to the wee hours of the night,
07:20just like going everywhere.
07:24And we didn't we never look back.
07:26Pokemon Go and what was that Spider-Man game?
07:28Yeah. Yeah. Just Spider-Man.
07:30Yeah, Spider-Man.
07:31We just just would stay up so late.
07:33Where's the Blue Beetle game, bro?
07:35I'm waiting. I want to fly around in my little backpack.
07:38That's right.
07:40And since we're at Comic-Con, we're going to do a little rapid fire round with
07:45the Wolverine bucket, question bucket.
07:48Hugh Jackman.
07:50So we'll take turns.
07:51You pull a question first and you both answer it.
07:53And we'll just go back and forth a few times. Oddly.
07:58Provocative.
07:59OK, I'm going to I'm picking yours.
08:01OK, ask me a question.
08:03What's the best sci-fi moment in any?
08:06Wait, what's the best moment in any sci-fi movie or TV show?
08:10It's got to be the alien coming out of the stomach in Alien.
08:14Oh, like that.
08:16Just that movie already.
08:17I just think so iconic sci-fi, that movie
08:21and seeing, yeah, like seeing it below the skin.
08:26I don't know how they did that.
08:26I mean, prosthetics, it must have been like it must have been an animatronic
08:29or something, but that that sci-fi right there, disgusting.
08:32What about you?
08:34What's your sci-fi moment?
08:35Do it from there.
08:37Oh, man.
08:41So what's your
08:43what's your sci-fi moment, Jacob?
08:46I like in Interstellar when
08:50he's banging in the fourth dimension.
08:53Oh, yeah. He's like, oh, dude, I forgot me.
09:00What about this, Jacob?
09:01What's the most iconic voice in an animated series?
09:05Oh, man.
09:07I'll go first. What do you think of yours?
09:09I'm going to go from Tokyo Revengers.
09:14What's his name?
09:16It's actually the age.
09:17He's something zombie.
09:18Hatch, I don't I don't remember.
09:21But if you know, if you know, it's a zombie.
09:24He's got sin and punishment tattooed on his hands.
09:26He's fucking sick.
09:27I'm pretty sure it's up to the age.
09:29That's hilarious. My my.
09:32All right. Who's up?
09:33Who's the best voice character?
09:35I'm tied between Mark Hamill's Joker.
09:39Oh, yeah.
09:41And. God, I'm such a weenie, bro.
09:47I really, really want to say Gojo in JJK.
09:51I just think he's so good at portraying.
09:54Like that, he's the shit.
09:56Yeah, he's effortlessly cool.
09:59I also 25th anniversary, Tom Kenny.
10:02He's he's. Oh, Tom.
10:04Oh, damn. He's the go.
10:05That's true. He is the go.
10:07All right. Now we're going to ask you one now. Yes.
10:09Oh, you don't need to ask me.
10:10What would your superpower be?
10:11What would your superpower be?
10:13There's only one right answer.
10:14Really? Like to fly?
10:17I mean, that's a good one.
10:18What was the one I was thinking?
10:19What was the right answer?
10:20To be who you don't know.
10:21Which which one? Which one?
10:22What's what's your superpower?
10:23I maybe to be invisible.
10:26Oh, OK. All right.
10:28I was like, it's still not the right one.
10:29I'm waiting on the right one.
10:30I'm waiting for alien scarab in my back.
10:32I am. Oh, I think teleportation is the best one.
10:36That's the one that I want because I can go anywhere.
10:38I want super speed.
10:40So you can a train through people.
10:42I think that'd be cool.
10:43Teleportation would rock, though.
10:44Actually, you know what?
10:45I don't want teleportation
10:46because it would make bank robbing way too easy. Right.
10:49You could be like Nightcrawler
10:50where you have to see it to go in there.
10:52No, doesn't he walk through hell? Isn't that the lore?
10:53OK, well, you can do that, too.
10:56OK, wait. Last one.
10:57You put it back. Oh, sorry.
11:00You guys are killing this game.
11:03Ooh, you can't be biased.
11:05OK, what is your all time favorite cinematic universe?
11:10Oh, man.
11:12All time favorite cinematic universe.
11:14Favorite cinema.
11:15I'm going to have to go.
11:17Pixar, I think, like, yeah, Pixar growing up.
11:21Oh, Pixar or Men in Black.
11:25Yeah. Oh, the first three.
11:27I don't know about the other ones.
11:28I haven't seen those, but.
11:30Up, Ratatouille, Incredibles.
11:33Does our Antoine Foucault's movies a part of their universe?
11:37Sure, sure.
11:39That's I pick it. I split.
11:41Um, are you a fan of I guess?
11:43No, I'm not sure. I guess that is something I just.
11:46Oh, that's what you're talking about.
11:47Yeah, that's what I'm saying.
11:48Are they all in the same universe?
11:49Those movies that I was talking about? Yeah.
11:51Yeah, no, no.
11:52And oh, what movies are his like Training Day Equalizer?
11:56Oh, yeah.
11:58That's not a franchise.
12:00Just Denzel.
12:01Just Denzel Washington.
12:02Just yeah, I guess Denzel Washington.
12:03Any Denzel IP.
12:05That's his franchise.
12:06Yeah. Denzel Washington's cinematic universe.
12:09The New Gladiator.
12:11It's the newest addition to that.
12:12I'm so excited for that movie.
12:14I loved the old one as a kid.
12:17And the fact that Denzel's in it is so cool.
12:20Oh, so you want to be the gladiator?
12:23That was my Denzel.
12:24That's what you said?
12:26That was my Denzel.
12:27Oh, so you want to be the gladiator.
12:28You sound like Bane, bro.
12:30Oh, oh, so you want to be the gladiator.
12:34I'm sorry, Denzel.
12:35Sorry.
12:36Go.
12:37No, you guys.
12:37Do you want one more question?
12:38Do you want to see one?
12:39You can.
12:40I want to end this, actually.
12:42Which character from any Denzel Washington film or TV show
12:46would you choose to cosplay as?
12:48King Kong?
12:50King Kong!
12:51Sorry.
12:53Any Denzel Washington.
12:54Any Denzel Washington.
12:55What?
12:56Um, if I could cosplay as just any character,
12:59we'll make it more broad.
13:00But it says Denzel on it.
13:01I don't think it did.
13:03Let's just both choose Denzel.
13:04We'll choose Denzel.
13:05All right, you guys can cosplay as Denzel in The Gladiator,
13:08maybe, the new movie.
13:11I didn't prepare to answer these questions,
13:12I've got to be honest.
13:13But maybe, like, I've never done a Harley Quinn costume,
13:16and I always kind of wanted to.
13:16You could pull that off.
13:17It's a little stereotypical, right?
13:19But it also feels like a classic.
13:20Because she's good?
13:21Like, she's cool.
13:22It is, but I just think a lot of people do it.
13:24You know, it was a very popular Halloween costume at one point.
13:26For sure.
13:27But at the same time, it also feels like a good classic.
13:30I'd call it entry-level, but you can also make it your own.
13:33That's so true.
13:34You could do the different...
13:35I had a friend do, like, Birds of Prey,
13:37Harley Quinn ones, and the gold overalls.
13:39That's cool.
13:39So you're totally right.
13:40You just need that big hammer.
13:41Denzel cosplay, go.
13:43Um, I want to be...
13:46I want to be that movie that he did with Jared Leto and...
13:51Oh!
13:52You know what I'm talking about?
13:53Little Things, all the little things or something.
13:55What's the guy from Freddie Mercury?
13:57Yeah, that guy, Rami Malek.
13:58Rami Malek.
13:59Dude, what?
14:00That was the first one that came to my head.
14:04I want to be him in The Equalizer 3.
14:07Oh, true.
14:10Dude, he's just, like, going through Italy,
14:12and he's like, yo, let my people be.
14:15That's a vibe.
14:16This has been Chola, what are you doing here?
14:17I'm Jacob.
14:18We're getting kicked out.
14:20You guys just have more interviews to do,
14:21more Comic-Con stuff to do.
14:22I didn't realize that it would be so...
14:24I should have known that putting the hand in the Wolverine mouth
14:27would be, you know, as weird as I guess you might imagine.
14:30I think they...
14:31That's the intended effect.
14:32The goal, yeah.
14:33I think they...
14:34I think they wanted it to be weird.
14:36I can just picture Ryan Reynolds at the factory being like,
14:38okay, but what if, like, you can feel his tongue
14:40as you're putting your hand in for...
14:42Wait, guys, there's not enough texture on the tongue.
14:44Can we add more, like, rivets to the tongue?
14:47Also, why is there none of these other buckets I've seen
14:50have this kind of, like, rubbery thing?
14:52Oh, yeah.
14:53The soft cap?
14:54That part feels wrong about it.
14:56There's...
14:57Maybe I should...
14:59It really feels like...
15:01I can't say anything.
15:02Yeah, let's...
15:04Thank you, guys.
15:05Thank you for having us.
15:06Yes, thank you so much for being here,
15:07and have a great rest of your Comic-Con.
