00:00You
00:30The dead bodies in the south transept, the injured in the north, the dead in the south
00:47transept, the worse the injury, the closer to the higher altar.
00:51I'm coming, I'm coming.
01:01What's your name?
01:09Clear the way for Lord Roland.
01:19Thank you for saving him.
01:22You're a brave man.
01:24It was an honour, my lady.
01:27May I examine him?
01:29Certainly not.
01:31Take him to your brother, Joseph.
01:41The skull is open to the brain.
01:43Help me turn him over onto his side.
01:56I've never seen him anywhere.
02:08What colours was he wearing?
02:10Do you remember?
02:13This is my dad.
02:17This is my dad.
02:26Help.
02:56Help.
03:15You should have put dung into the owl's wound before closing it, cousin.
03:20It draws out the disease.
03:23Even Oxford doesn't sanction that anymore.
03:26You'd know that if you'd studied medicine.
03:29No, I studied theology.
03:31A higher calling than your diabolic medicine.
03:36What's needed, cousin, is less theology and more of the healing arts.
03:40Do you need more evidence of God's wrath? The bridge collapsed because he is displeased.
03:43The bridge collapsed because it's old and inadequate.
03:45Yes, by God's will.
03:47The punishment is upon Kingsbridge for becoming a haven for witches, whores and filth.
03:54Well, you would know, cousin.
04:17Come on.
04:47There, father.
04:49Yesterday, the French all but sank an English trader by ramming her.
04:53Our sailors escaped death only by grace of the captain's skills.
04:58Sire, this is an act of war.
05:01Is war declared?
05:04No.
05:05No. No, it is not.
05:10Grandmother says that we must invade Calais and march on Paris.
05:14I think I'd rather agree.
05:18Do you even know where Calais is?
05:22Of course I do.
05:27There's Calais.
05:32And there's Paris.
05:39Sire, that is a Roman.
05:48I have been given a sign.
05:52A son of Isabella of France.
05:56Grandson of Philip IV of France, heir of the House of Capet.
06:02I am the lawful godfather of Calais.
06:07I have been given a sign.
06:10A son of Isabella of France.
06:14I am the lawful, god-given king of France.
06:22The blockade of England shall be ended.
06:26And let no man stand between me and my rightful throne.
06:33Once again, the English flag will fly on both sides of the British sea.
06:41God save the Queen!
07:12Still no change?
07:15Neither for the worse nor better.
07:18I have no way of telling how it bodes.
07:21It means God has not made up his mind yet.
07:27I'm so sorry about what they did to Mattie.
07:31Thank you.
07:34I so admired you at her trial.
07:36You had the courage to speak out and I did not.
07:39We need strong women like you in the church.
07:43Me in the church?
07:47Women today are either nun, wife or whore.
07:50A nun is my father priest.
08:03How are you?
08:04Tired.
08:08I just wish Mattie was here.
08:11I can't believe in a church that would kill Mattie.
08:14There's nothing holy about that, it was evil.
08:17I agree.
08:19The one person that could have helped us.
08:23I've only learned a fraction of everything that she knew.
08:26No, no, no, Carys, that's not true.
08:29You work in miracles.
08:30No, no, no, Carys, that's not true.
08:33You work in miracles here.
08:34Am I?
08:36It's chaos.
08:38We can't just leave people strewn across the cathedral floor.
08:41We need a place to put the sick and the injured.
08:44Well, when this is over, we'll build one.
08:48I wouldn't even know where to start.
08:51I said we.
08:56And is that because of your faith in my work?
09:01Or how you feel about me?
09:05Both.
09:12Thank you.
09:14You've given me something to think about.
09:20You mean the building or me?
09:24Both.
09:31Both.
09:54I thought you were an angel.
09:57Scarcely that.
10:01You look so lovely.
10:05I was just dreaming
10:08about the time I first set eyes on you.
10:11The most beautiful woman in Kingsbridge.
10:14And you were the handsomest man.
10:18Were.
10:21Are.
10:23And ever shall be.
10:27How long before we wed?
10:32You're awake.
10:34You're awake!
10:39Praise God!
10:41I've been praying for you daily.
10:44Marjorie.
10:47I just had the strangest dream.
10:52The Stonebridge?
10:53Yes.
10:54No, no, no, no, no, no.
10:55We have debated this before.
10:57Yes, but, brother, with no bridge, there will be no tolls.
11:02No pilgrims, no merchants, and consequently no money.
11:06You'll be bankrupt within the year.
11:08Edmund, Edmund, where is your faith?
11:11God will provide.
11:12He took down the bridge, so obviously we don't need one.
11:16I trust in him, and so should you.
11:19Come, Brother Theodorek.
11:25What if Hall blinded him more ways than one?
11:28God help us if he's elected prior.
11:30Well, who else is running against him?
11:31No one, and that's the problem.
11:32We really need to find an alternative.
11:43Brother Thomas!
11:55You must know that you're the best man.
11:58The only man suitable for the position of prior.
12:01Thank you, Brother Matthias.
12:02You flatter me.
12:04Don't you want to be prior?
12:09I came here to find peace.
12:13And I fear that if I, if I stand, and perhaps worse if I want,
12:20that that peace might elude me.
12:24Well, never forget, for some it is a calling.
12:48You said I'd be prior.
12:50Brother Carlos is running, and all the older monks will vote for him.
12:52Don't worry about Carlos. He's easily taken care of.
12:56Who's running against him?
12:57Brother Thomas announced his candidacy last night.
13:00Brother Thomas?
13:01He's popular with the younger monks, which leaves me without support.
13:06He arrived here as a knight with an arrow through his arm.
13:10The man has a history.
13:12Unearth it.
13:23No less than Queen Isabella sponsored Sir Thomas Langley.
13:28So?
13:31He was stationed at Barclay Castle where the king was murdered,
13:35and arrived here shortly afterward injured and seeking refuge.
13:39He was killed in battle.
13:41He was wounded in battle.
13:43He was killed in battle.
13:45He was killed in battle.
13:47He was killed in battle.
13:49He was killed in battle.
13:50He was taken here afterward injured and seeking refuge.
13:54You think he was involved in the king's death?
13:58Inquire of him.
14:01Measure his answers.
14:07Be careful what you say.
14:09My dear Brother Thomas, I am merely asking.
14:11No, you're not. You're insinuating that I am somehow involved.
14:13No, no, not at all, not at all.
14:15I'm just, I'm just pointing out that since you were stationed
14:17at Barclay Castle where the king was murdered,
14:21it might appear by innuendo that you were somehow embroiled.
14:26Of course I wasn't.
14:27Well, of course you weren't.
14:29But you understand, naturally, a knight who mysteriously
14:33arrives here, injured, seeking refuge.
14:39Oh, and sponsored by the queen, no less.
14:43Some of our fellow monks will want to ask you questions.
14:46Why?
14:48Why now?
14:52Because you're standing for prior now.
14:57And once they know of your past,
15:00there's sure to be a simple inquiry.
15:12I think it's time for your instruction.
15:25I'll find some more prunes here.
15:27Come on.
15:29This way.
15:34No one will disturb us in here.
15:42Come on.
15:58Do you think your father suspects?
16:00Not that I'm fucking his fiance.
16:02I won't tell if you don't.
16:12Before the lord's successor can be appointed,
16:14your inheritance cannot be approved.
16:16My dad's dead, and I'm his only child.
16:19What's to approve?
16:21How will you pay workers?
16:2230 acres is more than one man can manage.
16:24It's not 30 acres.
16:27It's only 20 has to work.
16:28One third of the land is always kept fallow.
16:30It is not your business, woman.
16:32An inheritance from father to son,
16:34that's everyone's business.
16:36She's right, mate.
16:37What do you say to that?
16:39The new lord will have the final decision once he's appointed.
16:42But that could take months.
16:43I miss plowing and sowing by then.
16:46You can prove that you can farm the land
16:47before the new lord takes office.
16:49That should work in your favor.
16:52Next.
16:58Who the hell is she?
17:01I met her at the fair.
17:06Gwenda.
17:09Thanks.
17:10That's all right.
17:12You deserve it.
17:13Get someone to help you plow, and you'll
17:15finish it in no time.
17:17Everything I had was lost in the bridge collapse.
17:19I'll farm it myself.
17:21I'll help.
17:23I know you've done more than enough.
17:25I'm grateful.
17:26Wolfrick.
17:40Wolfrick.
18:02Good morning.
18:04You're wasting your time, Gwenda.
18:07You're wasting yours.
18:09I don't have any.
18:13Then you'll have to do.
18:17I can't pay you, Gwenda.
18:20I've got no money.
18:21Find another way to pay me.
18:23Come on.
18:24You pull, I'll push.
18:28Come on.
18:39Come on.
19:09Come on.
19:17Where's your home?
19:19I don't have one.
19:23Why not?
19:25My father was a mercenary in the Queen's Army,
19:27so I moved around.
19:31I would like to have a home someday.
19:35And all that goes with it.
19:39Who was that girl I saw you with?
19:41Annette.
19:44I want to marry her come autumn.
19:47Well, why isn't she here, child?
19:51Annette in the field.
19:54Doesn't she love you?
19:56Of course she does.
20:00Do you love her?
20:03I've known her since forever.
20:05Her father and mine, they were partners.
20:07So, you know, it's my duty to husband her.
20:13Well, anyway, that's not what I asked.
20:18Of course I love her.
20:21Good.
20:24I'm glad for you, Wilfred.
20:26King's Bridge needs an inn, dedicated exclusively
20:29to nursing the sick, a hospice.
20:31I've never heard of such a thing.
20:33With the bridge collapse, it made me realize
20:34how much we need one here.
20:36God willing, we never have a catastrophe like that again.
20:39No, but pilgrims will always come here to be cured.
20:41Imagine if they could find care as well as miracles.
20:44I'm sure they will.
20:45I'm sure they will.
20:46I'm sure they will.
20:47I'm sure they will.
20:48I'm sure they will.
20:49I'm sure they will.
20:50I'm sure they will.
20:51I'm sure they will.
20:52I'm sure they will.
20:53I'm sure they will.
20:54I could build a bridge to care as well as miracles.
20:56You'd build it here?
20:58The convent owns this land, doesn't it?
21:00Who would run it?
21:01I would.
21:02With your blessing, of course, Mother.
21:05As one of us.
21:09Well, no, as a laywoman.
21:11I've decided to take over Mattie's work.
21:13I understand.
21:15Not everyone is called to God.
21:19But a hospice for the sick, on our land,
21:21of our order it raises a complex set of questions. I'll have to think about it.
21:34I said what's good for the goose is good for the gander. He said it is neither a goose
21:38nor a gander. It is a common duck. And then I said even though I've got a hole in the head
21:44I can still see clearer than you.
21:51You're enjoying the meal. It's all right. Yes thank you. It's quite adequate. No it's okay.
21:57After the wedding tomorrow the monks are to elect a new prior. Yes.
22:04Uh well the candidates are Carlos. I was blind and set in his ways and uh myself.
22:13I would be so grateful for your support. I thought there was a third candidate also.
22:19No no brother Thomas has withdrawn. It seems he had a change of heart.
22:24And why should I support you? Well because that may be so bold.
22:31I wish to return Kingsbridge to its days of glory when prior fell in.
22:36And how would you do that? By suppressing temptation. I'll uh I'll build a wall
22:43separating monks from nuns. Whores will be hanged and virgins will have their heads cut.
22:47Not all temptation is female. Ah but the uh the source it is. Mother Eve.
22:53All power must reside with men and Kingsbridge with holy men. Like you.
23:05You're even more of a cunt as an adult than you were as a child.
23:09Carlos may be blind but he's not a prude. My son the bishop will ratify no one but him. You hear
23:14me Richard? Yes father whatever you say. Now if you'll excuse me it's been a long day and I must
23:20still recite my evening prayers. Good night brother. Good night William, Philippa. Sleep well Lady
23:25Marjorie. You have much joy to look forward to. On our wedding night.
23:36Loving cup.
23:36To us.
23:49So remember 55 paces down the aisle and three steps up at the altar.
23:57Are you certain you don't want me to guide you tomorrow? My blindness cannot be seen as a
24:02hindrance by the saw. Not if I'm to be prior. So 55 paces to the altar and then three three steps
24:10up. Three. Three steps up. That's right nearly there. Okay. And stop the first one is the wooden one.
24:20One two three. Perfect. Service and up. One two three. Good. Shall we count them on the way back? Right.
24:34One two three four five twenty nine thirty.
25:04So
25:34yes your eminence. I have something urgent to tell you.
25:43I can't this way till morning. I'm in the middle of prayer. I'm afraid it can't.
25:51I'm here to say that I will be the next prior.
25:56Weren't you listening? My father doesn't approve. Good night brother.
26:00Your father doesn't make the decision.
26:08The monks elect and you ratify.
26:17I mean you will support me won't you Bishop? After your father's wedding tomorrow.
27:00Oh thank you.
27:18What did that blind idiot think he was playing at? He's turned our wedding into a
27:22sacrilegious carnival. Calm yourself dear. Can I calm myself? I feel like my head was
27:27cracked not the statues. Yes what is it? Brother Carlos took his fall as a sign from God
27:42father. He's withdrawn his candidacy for prior. Which leaves us with who? Godwin?
27:49I've come to believe father that Godwin may be our best choice. Godwin?
27:57Christ on the cross.
28:07Those in favor of brother Godwin.
28:19I duly declare that brother Godwin has been elected prior.
29:27So you've all had a chance to see Alfred's designs. This is Merton's. Alfred's will cost
29:48295 pounds. Merton's comes in at 307. But Merton's is twice as wide which is what is needed.
29:57I thought only guild members are allowed to speak. Yeah who should listen to their wives? Well
30:01they're ex-wives. Yes I have a question. Both designs have piers whose foundations are set in
30:09the river. How will you build underwater? Simple. Drop rubble into the river until the pile is
30:14visible above water. Build your pier in that. And eventually the river will wash it away.
30:19I'd build a cofferdam. Cofferdam? It's an Italian invention. Two rings of wooden stakes,
30:24one inside the other, driven into the riverbed. And you pour mortar into the gap between the rings
30:29making it watertight. Then remove the water, expose the riverbed and build your mortar stone
30:33foundation. Foreigners tell us how to build. Whoever he listens to will build it cheaper.
30:40Well I'll charge for my workers but not for myself. Instead I'll accept a deed to the
30:45Leper Island. Unless Alfred works for free. You can't beat that.
30:53Alfred? Merton adds my vote. And mine too. Seems clear to me. I vote for Merton.
31:08Congratulations. Thank you. You deserve it. Thank you Edmund. It's about time Alfred had some
31:13competition in this town. We'll have to work out a schedule and distribution of funds but uh...
31:24We can talk about that tomorrow. Evening daughter. Father.
31:28Thank you for supporting me. I'm happy for you.
31:46And are you happy?
31:53What will it take to win you Carys?
31:56I know that you care for me. As I care for you. So what more is there? Tell me. Please.
32:08Please. How do I win you?
32:17Through my heart.
32:21I know you already have me.
32:28Merton!
32:32Merton! There you are!
32:34Come on. We're going to go to the inn to celebrate. Come on.
32:45Well done boy.
32:53My friend's a jewel toast. Firstly to Marjorie who through her beauty can evoke virility in a
32:58man with half a century behind him.
33:02And of course to our unborn child.
33:08Our unborn child.
33:10Not too embarrassing, eh? No. There's a messenger my lord from her majesty the queen.
33:14What does she want? She wants you my lord.
33:20She wants you my lord.
33:24She wants you my lord.
33:28She wants you my lord.
33:34She wants you my lord.
33:36She wants you my lord.
33:41Therefore until further notice all rates of taxation will be doubled.
33:52Sir Roland. This troubles you? No your highness. But I sense you are dismayed by this. Please
34:01enlighten your queen. We have embarked upon an expensive rebuilding of our bridge
34:07and I fear that these new taxes will be trying. Trying?
34:16You think I should care about a bridge when we have a war with France?
34:20I do not defend a bridge built for vanity but in this case the very existence of King's Bridge
34:25depends upon it. And the country's very existence depends on this war.
34:31King's Bridge can wither and die for all I care. I will have my taxes. Absolute more, my queen.
34:40Father. Why does grandmother hate King's Bridge so much?
34:46I can only guess. Take as many men as you see fit. Ride to King's Bridge. Stop the
34:51bridge building immediately. But it's not crown lands, my lord. It belongs to the Priory.
34:58What's my authority? Authority? The queen just ordered me and now I'm ordering you.
35:05Are you questioning my authority or hers? Are you clear? Yes. I'll get on with it.
35:22We need to build two copper dams between shore and this side of the island. One here.
35:40Greetings, brother. What brings you back to King's Bridge?
35:46Who's in charge here? Well, I am.
35:52Orders from the queen. This work must stop. That's enough. Go home. There's no bridge to be built.
36:01Go home. By what right? Ralph, you know this is Priory land. This has no validity. Don't make me
36:06repeat myself, brother. These are the orders of our queen. Well, then I'll appeal. The only court
36:12of appeal is Westminster under our son's jurisdiction. Ralph, you know that this town can't survive
36:18without a bridge. That's enough. I said stop. By order of the queen. Fuck the queen.
36:27What did you say? Ralph, I said fuck the queen. She's French.
36:34Ralph, no. Ralph, no. Why should I obey her? I've got a family to feed.
36:39She's a water wind. Your father would be ashamed. That's enough.
36:43Fucking traitor.
36:58Ralph. What's wrong with you?
37:05You'd have your own brother be called a traitor. Whose side are you on?
37:13Mine. All of you, go home.
37:39Bridge is stopped.
37:44Now there's a man who knows how to take an order.
37:54Sir Rowland has appointed the new Lord of Wigley. He'll hear your case tomorrow.
38:12Very well, Sir Rowland. Sir Rowland.
38:24When summer lash with birds of song. Now is near the windy blast and weather strong.
38:35Oh dear how this night is long.
38:38Thank you.
39:01I'm the new Lord of Wigley. You come before me I'm told to appeal your inheritance.
39:08Which is denied.
39:16Next.
39:23This is mine. It was my father's house.
39:39Bastard.
39:54You can appeal.
39:56No. She's going to listen to me.
40:02She left me.
40:07And I...
40:10No land, no wedding.
40:15She didn't love you.
40:16Yeah well I loved her.
40:21She's gone, Grindr.
40:26I've been a bloody waste.
40:28My home is here now.
42:06It's all right.
42:21You took Wulfric's land away from him. Give it back.
42:34Are you his woman?
42:36Yes.
42:38And you want me to give him his land?
42:40Yes, that's what I want.
42:45You've fucked before.
42:48No, it's a sin.
42:51Thirty acres for a quick fuck, that's a good deal. Take off your dress.
42:56No.
42:58Do it yourself.
43:05Do you have a bible?
43:20Why?
43:22Because I want you to swear. If I do what you say, you will give him his land.
43:28I swear by this holy book, I'll give Wulfric what he wants.
43:35If you do the same for me, I'll strip.
43:58How Richard is a bishop, I do not know. He disgusts me.
44:12Stooping to such desires.
44:14A bishop giving in to earthly desires, oh how you shock me.
44:18Fucking his own father's wife, it's an abomination.
44:22Did I miss here? Of whom are we talking?
44:26Bishop Richard.
44:29And who is he fucking?
44:32Lady Marjorie, Roland's wife. I doubt the child she's expecting is even his.
44:38And Roland has no idea?
44:39My god, mother, he'd kill her if he learned of it.
44:43I imagine he would.
44:45My dear Earl Roland, I have learned some very distressing news.
45:11Wait!
45:13Where's the deed to the land? Where is it?
45:16The land has been forfeited. I've given it to George Perkins.
45:19You swore on the bible you'd give it back.
45:22No, I didn't.
45:24You swore!
45:30You swore!
45:34You swore.
45:42Good evening, my lord.
45:50Marjorie.
45:53Come, let me look at you.
46:01So beautiful and so ripe.
46:06You'll be a handsome child, my lord.
46:09Do you think he will look like me?
46:13I'm sure of it.
46:18And which of my sons do you think you'll favor?
46:22My lord?
46:24Richard, I would guess.
46:27Don't you think?
46:29Since he's the one you've been fucking.
46:35My lord, I would never...
46:38You take me for a fool.
46:41An old fool.
46:45My lord, who told you this?
46:52I've scarcely looked at him.
46:55I love you.
46:58And I loved you, Marjorie.
47:02With all my heart.
47:04With all my heart.
47:06You fucking whore!
47:08Come on, come on!
47:10My lord, I love you!
47:12Get out of my house!
47:14Get out!
47:16Come on!
47:18Get out!
47:34Get out!
