Dutch companies receive investment to develop tidal energy in Wadden Sea region
Until now, generating sustainable electricity in the Netherlands was mainly done with solar panels and wind turbines.

00:00Two Dutch companies have received over 2 million euros each for the development of tidal energies,
00:08which is the extraction of energy from tides.
00:11The company Equinox works with a turbine that looks a bit like an underwater windmill, while
00:16the second company, Seacurrent, has created a kite that rotates figure eights on a cable,
00:21which is connected to a generator on the seabed.
00:25The kite will generate electricity for about 600 homes,
00:29that is Hollum and Mafnes, our two largest villages, and hopefully there will be more in the future.
00:36For both companies, the current in the sea as a result of ebb and flow
00:40is then converted into electricity.
00:45The reason for this is that it is already very busy on the Wadden Sea.
00:48We don't know what effect it has on nature, among other things,
00:53and then other things would have to shift so that there would be room for it.
00:57But there are concerns over the profitability.
