00:00Some 18 people were killed after a plane crashed and caught fire while it was taking off from
00:18Nepal's capital, Kathmandu.
00:20The pilot, who is currently receiving treatment in a hospital, is the only survivor of the
00:26fatal accident.
00:2819 people were on board Saure Airlines test flight, including technical staff members
00:35of the airline and two crew members.
00:45As per the local time, the incident happened at around 11.15, a few minutes after the plane
00:52took off from the Tribhuvan International Airport.
00:56The Saure Airlines test flight was headed to Pokhara as part of a routine maintenance
01:02check.
01:03Airport chief Jagannath Nirula told an initial assessment showed that the plane had flown
01:09in the wrong direction.
01:12Footage of the incident show the plane tilting above the runway before crashing into the
01:17ground and busting into flames.
01:20It was quickly enveloped in fire and smoke.
01:25The CRJ-200 plane, which can seat 50 passengers, did not gain any altitude on take-off, slipped
01:34off the runway and fell down an embankment and caught fire.
01:39Videos from the spot show a large fire with plumes of smoke rising near the Tribhuvan
01:46International Airport.
01:48Firefighters and the Nepal Army are at the spot.
01:53However, the cause of the fire is not yet known.

02:10by deep gorges and valleys on all sides.
02:15It's among the riskiest airport in the world.
02:18Nepal's air industry has some of the worst air safety records in the world, plagued by
02:24poor safety due to insufficient training and maintenance.
02:29In 2023, a Yeti Airlines aircraft crashed on Pokhara, killing all 72 people on board,
02:37including five Indians.
02:39It was Nepal's deadliest crash since 1992 when all 167 people aboard a Pakistan International
02:48Airlines died when it crashed on approach to Kathmandu airport.
